INSPIRATION
MADE
EVEN EASIER
Its never been hard to fnd inspiration in the IKEA catalog, but this year its even easier.
Weve taken our insights about everyday life and used them to make changes in the
catalog to room settings, product displays, styles and more.
For instance, weve stopped dividing life at home into rooms. Bedrooms, for example
theyre as varied as the ways people sleep. Weve taken away our notions of what
defned a bedroom and replaced them with the idea sleeping. We know that some
homes dont have bedrooms they have one 24-hour room where people live and
sleep. Life is about activities; not the walls that defne where they unfold.
And now, when were showing a selection of products, weve changed things up so its
easier to compare products. Theres a better overview of the sizes, designs, styles,
colors and materials of what we have but not all we have since the web and the store
show all IKEA products.
Speaking of styles, weve dedicated several pages of the catalog to show our range
of styles side by side. Whether you like traditional, modern, simple, bold, a little bit
more Scandinavian or a little bit less, with styles grouped and shown together, its
easier to fnd looks and products that speak to you.
Plus, throughout the catalog, look for the smartphone symbol. It leads to additions and
extended material that enhance the catalog experience with more ideas and inspiration.
Once youve found what youre looking for (and maybe what you didnt realize you
needed), weve made it easier to fnd more information on IKEA-USA.com, where youll
fnd even more tips, ideas and inspiration.
All these changes make it easier to be inspired by what you see in the catalog and bring
new life to your home!
THANK YOU,
TEXTILES
Whether we stop to think about it or
not, life would be rather cold and lonely
without textiles. Thats why this year
at IKEA and in the 2013 IKEA Catalog,
were celebrating textiles for making life
soft, snuggly, lively and personal.
From blankets and rugs to curtains and
towels, textiles are an easy, affordable,
attractive and quick way to bring new
life to your home. Refresh a sofa with
cushions or throws. Switch out curtains
instead of repainting a room. Change
doesnt have to be big and diffcult.
It can be as small and simple as
changing the sheets.

CREATIVITY
The 2013 IKEA Catalog goes well with
paint, scissors, glue, needle, thread and
an open mind. Thats because, this year,
we hope our ideas spark even more
inspiration for people to express them-
selves and their creativity at home.

BEHIND THE SCENES
Work on this years IKEA catalog began in September 2011 at IKEA Communications
(ICOM) in lmhult, Sweden. Catalog production takes the teamwork and skill of
many employees from art directors to project leaders and carpenters. There will be
211 million copies of the 2013 catalog, at about 324 pages each. Distributed in
43 countries, the catalog will have 62 different versions.
Follow an IKEA crew on location as they flm a photo shoot for the 2013
IKEA Catalog. Watch the flm at IKEA-USA.com
Heres what a typical day of working on the catalog looks like for an
ICOM creative:
8:00 Lets start at the catalog wall, which shows each of its 324 pages and
where we are in the process with text and photos.
9:00 Check in with the 3D team, who create digital images using advanced
technology to make the impossible possible
10:00 While were on the same foor, lets look closely at some of the catalogs
photos to see if anything needs to be touched up.
11:00 Brainstorm with an interior designer. ICOMs 33 interior designers come
from 13 countries and use insight from home visits and magazines
for inspiration.
12:00 Lunch! Meatballs, a salad or Thai takeaway?
1:00 Its time to walk through the 8,800-square-foot studio to catch up with the
different product and room photos.
2:00 Meeting with a project leader. Most work days have these, dont they?
2:45 Fika! Most of ICOMs 285 employees take a coffee break in the cafe
(usually with something sweet to eat, too.)
3:15 Studio time again. This time we need a new vase thats missing from a
room setting. Lets look in the studios mini store.
4:00 Still in the studio. One room needs a prop. Will it be food? Plants?
An old camera? A snowman?
5:00 Its time to go home, relax and rest for tomorrow. Theres still more to do!

ELEMENTS OF
SUSTAINABILITY
The IKEA catalog is something we know people keep at home on
bookshelves, coffee tables and desks all year long. To make the 2013 IKEA
Catalog even more enjoyable, weve improved the paper quality and
increased the width. Still, with 50 paper and print suppliers in more than
19 countries, there were many complex challenges to address.
All paper fber used in the 2013 IKEA Catalog is traceable back to the forests and will
be audited according to criteria set by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). As we
transition to a new format and paper type, we will set clear goals for ourselves and
our suppliers to further improve the sustainability elements of future IKEA catalogs,
including water use, paper sources and carbon emissions.
Want to know more about how we work to reduce the IKEA catalogs environmental
impact? Please read the IKEA Sustainability Report on IKEA-USA.com
