SH-3 Sea King
05/13/2011 by Thor
The SH-3 Sea King is a military helicopter developed by Sikorsky
for the US Navy. It performed its first test flight in 1959 and
entered service in 1961. The SH-3 is powered by two General
Electric T58-GE-10 turboshaft engines, giving 1,400 horsepower.
Designed for shipboard operations, the Sea Kings main rotor has
five blades, which can be folded for easy stowage. The anti-
submarine warfare versions, the SH-3A and the SH-3D, are
usually armed with four torpedoes, four depth charges or two
anti-ship missiles, such as Sea Eagle or Exocet missiles. It can
also readily be configured to deploy the B57 tactical nuclear
weapon. The presidential versions are the VH-3A "Sea King"
used as the Marine One helicopter by Presidents Lyndon B
Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Gerard Ford from 1963 to 1976, and
the VH-3D, which is still in service.
Although the SH-3 Sea King has mainly been used for anti-
submarine warfare, it also served in anti-ship, search and
rescue, transport, communications, executive transport and
Airborne Early Warning roles. Aircraft carriers always deployed
the Sea King as the first aircraft in the air and the last to land
serving in air operations as plane guard and SAR for the fixed
winged aircraft. An SH-3A, operating from the USS New Orleans
amphibious assault ship, was used in the February 1971 Apollo
14 recovery mission. In the 1990s, it was replaced by in the ASW
and SAR roles by the SH-60 Sea Hawk. All SH-3 helicopters in US
Navy service are used in the logistics support, range support,
Search and Rescue, test, and VIP transport roles.
