Epidemiology

Traumatic injuries of anterior teeth in children and adolescents

EPI DEMI OLOGY
A considerable variation can be seen in the frequency of traumatic dental injuries, which reflects
a number of factors such as sampling criteria, age, and sex of the population.
Incidence and prevalence of dental trauma
In a cross sectional study it was determined that the incidence of trauma to the anterior
permanent teeth in 6-12 year old school children was 1.7 patients/100 children/year while
involving 2.1 teeth/ 100 children/year.
One of the best ways to eliminate the influence of age is to study prevalence of traumatic
dental injuries at different stages of development.A study from Denmark showed that
30% of children had suffered traumatic denial injuries in the primary dentition and 22%
in the permanent dentition. The incidence of injuries lo primary teeth increase from 1
year of age and most traumas involve children younger than 4 years of age. In the
permanent dentition, the most accident-prone time is between 8 and 10 years.
