The picnics, the days at the beach, the family trips to the local ice cream shop - all are memories
that bring up strong feelings of nostalgia and happiness. Eating a popsicle or an ice cream cone
instantly transports you back in time to when you frst enjoyed these summer treats while off from
school, enjoying every small moment of freedom.
As an adult, your tastes might slowly change to include that of an adult variety with frozen
margaritas and even alcoholic popsicles! (or pop-tails as theyre commonly named!) These treats

In our industry, we often see inspiration pulled from food. With the amount of interesting and

Sea the Inspiration!
The sea has inspired many for centuries.
From its beauty to the mysteries it holds, we
are fascinated by the awesome breadth
and depth of the ocean. The arts abound
with the inspiration the sea provides:
poems, paintings, novels, drawings,
photographs, movies and so much more
have been dedicated to depicting the
beauty and feeling of the sea.
The sea covers 70% of the Earths surface.
It provides food and oxygen, moderates
the Earths climate and provides valuable
resources for the sustainability of life on our planet. It has been a constant curiosity for human
exploration starting with the navigation of the sea during the Renaissance to the modern day
expeditions to the depths to fnd out all of the unknowns that it holds. With a strong admiration
and fear of the seas massive power and secrets, stories fourish of sea monsters, ships lost at sea,
mermaids, sailing and exploration of the ocean since the earliest points in history. To say it is a
popular topic would be a gross understatement!
Thoughts always turn to the sea and all its beauty as the temperatures start to warm and all one
can think of is lounging by its beauty on a sandy beach. Taking a dip in its cool waters to relieve
yourself of the summer heat, surfng on its majestic waves or walking along its shores, everyone
enjoys the fun and serenity that the sea provides.
Summer is the perfect time to add in more ocean-themed products. There are so many possibilities
for beautiful creations and the scents you can use are incredibly fresh and bright. When no one
wants to be weighed down with overly heavy scents, a sea inspired scent is the perfect answer. The
color you can achieve by mimicking the shades of the ocean is incredible and can be translated
into a number of designs to portray the fow of the sea from swirls to ombre to drizzles. You can
portray the tactile quality of the beach by using natural exfoliant additives such as salts or apricot
seed powder.

Red-y for Some Great Ruby Ideas?
Everyone is very familiar with the tradition
where we associate a particular gemstone
with the months of the year. Many delight
in hopes that theyll get the gemstone
dedicated to their birth month as a gift
and it can make it easier to decide gifts for
those picky people in your life!
This idea stems from a few different places.
One thought is that it traces back to the
Breastplate of Aaron described in the Bible
in the book of Exodus. The Breastplate
was a religious garment set with twelve
gemstones that represented the twelve tribes of Israel. The gems were set in four rows of three:
sardius, topaz and carbuncle; emerald, sapphire and diamond; ligure, agate and amethyst;
and beryl, onyx and jasper.* Another idea is Based on this astrological model, one ought to
own a collection of the 12 different gemstones assigned to the signs of the zodiac, and wear the
appropriate gem during the ascendancy of the corresponding sign. Our modern interpretation of
an individual always wearing the gemstone associated with their birth month is traced back to 18th
century Poland where Jewish gem traders came to the region with intent on selling said gemstones
in abundance. The most current list of gemstones assigned by month comes from 1912 when the
National Association of Jewelers declared the specifc gems to specifc months and it hasnt changed
since then. We, as a culture, have embraced this fun identifcation to our birth month.
Ads are constantly created by jewelers within each month hocking their newest wares for that
months birthstone. Retailers pick up on it by adding pieces to their existing collections that detail
the stronger colored gemstones such as emerald, sapphire and, of course, ruby. As a gemstone and
a color, nothing is as dazzling or rich as ruby red. The depth and brilliance you can fnd within this
color is identifed with heat, love and power. It commands attention and can easily be incorporated
into a number of products making it a very popular color.
Make this color a centerpiece in your collection this July by creating a full line dedicated to it.
Incorporate the birthstone lore into your marketing campaign and create gemstone-like soaps,
brilliant ruby lotions or cosmetics showcasing the rich color all month long. Add some ruby red
packaging to help push the theme even further - a red ribbon here, a colorful crimson box there
and a collection can easily be created to support this theme.

Directions
1. NOTE: If you are making these products for sale, good manufacturing practices recommend you wear a hairnet, gloves and a
mask. We also recommend a clean apron.
2. In a large glass bowl, mix 2 cups of Baking Soda and 1 cup Citric Acid. Blend with a wire whisk.
3. In a small glass bowl, place 1 oz. of shea butter. Heat in microwave at 50% power until it is melted.
4. Drizzle melted shea butter over mixture and blend further with whisk.
5. To this mixture, add 1 Tablespoon of Lathanol Powder (optional) to add bubbles.
6. Next, add 2 oz. of Kaolin Clay (4 Tablespoons)and about 1/4 teaspoon of Matte Teal Pigment Powder. Color will darken when
it is spritzed with rubbing alcohol.
7. With gloved hands, mix entire mixture well. Break up any clumps with fngers.
8. With a plastic dropper, drizzle 3 ml of fragrance oil over mixture. Again, mix with whisk or gloved hands.
9. Place jelly roll pan on fat surface.
10. Begin spritzing mixture with rubbing alcohol, spritzing with one hand and mixing with the other gloved hand.
11. Spritz generously until mixture sticks together when squeezed in palm of hand. If they are too dry, they will not hold together.
12. When mixture is moist enough, pour into jelly roll pan. Smooth out to sides and pat down tightly.
13. Remove one push pop from package. Push up the inside base and remove. Using the push pop handle, use this base to cut out
bath fzzies in jelly roll pan. Press down frmly so the bath fzzy stays together. If the fzzy stays in the circular base, carefully
remove and place on table to dry.
14. Continue cutting out until entire pan is fnished. Jelly roll pan should yield approximately 40 bath fzzies. When fnished, carefully
remove from pan usually a metal spatula. Let dry on covered table. If these are not removed from pan, they may be too hard to
remove after they have hardened.
15. Let fzzies dry at least 1 hour.
16. Any leftover fzzy mixture can be packaged loosely in a cello bag and tied with a ribbon. Mixture will still fzz, it is just not
pressed into a shape. (There will be approx. 26 tabs left over which can also be packaged in a cello bag).
17. Wash all utensils used to make the green fzzies. Repeat Steps 2-15 to make the pink watermelon fzzies.
18. Once both pink and green fzzies are set up, they can be packaged into the push pop containers.
19. Take one bath fzzy and place down into the push-up base. (Base can be pushed up to make it easier to fll.) Fizzy should ft right
into this base. Layer colors until the entire Push Pop is flled. Push Pop should hold between 8-9 bath fzzies.
20. Snap on cap and label the product. Dont forget about the leftover mixture. Dont throw away but package and sell as loose
fzzy mixture.

2. Measure 5 oz. of Extra Clear Soap
and cut into small pieces. Place in glass
measuring cup and heat in microwave
until melted.
3. Add 4 ml. of fragrance oil and mix.
Add Coral Mica Powder until desired
shade is reached.
4. Add 1/2 teaspoon Strawberry Seeds
and blend into clear soap.
5. Pour between 4 of the heart shaped
cavities. Spritz tops with alcohol to
release any air bubbles.
6. Measure and melt 1 oz. of Ultra White
Soap in a plastic beaker. Add 1/8-1/4
tsp. Matte White Pigment and mix in
well. Add .75 ml. of fragrance oil and
blend in.
7. In a V-shape pour a small amount of
white soap in the heart shaped cavities
with pink soap. There should be
enough white soap left to do this same
technique for the kiwi slices. White
soap should be poured before pink
soap hardens.
8. Measure and melt 4.5 oz. of Extra
Clear until melted. Remove from
microwave and stir when completely
melted.
9. To melted soap add 4 ml. fragrance
oil. Add green and yellow mica
powder until desired shade of green is
achieved. Add 1/2 teaspoon of Poppy
Seeds. Stir soap well.
10. Pour into 3 of the round soap mold
cavities. Spritz tops of soap with
alcohol.
11. Remelt the remaining white soap in
the plastic beaker. In the center of
the round green soap cavities, pour a
small amount of white soap in the same
V-shaped technique as in Step 8.
Spritz with alcohol.
12. Measure and melt 4.5 oz. of Extra
Clear Soap in a glass measuring cup.
Add 4 ml. fragrance and Coral and
Yellow Mica Powder. Mix and then
pour between 3 of the round cavities.
Spritz with alcohol.
13. Allow all pieces to set up before
unmolding.
14. Unmold the fruit pieces and cut into
fruit shapes. For the kiwis, cut each
piece into either 2 or 3 slices, leaving
them in the round shape.
15. For the strawberries, cut off the tops of
the hearts and then cut them into 2-3
slices each.
16. For the peach slices, cut them in half to
create semi-circles and then cut those
pieces in half. Each round soap should
make 4 half-circle shapes.
17. Experiment to see how many pieces of
fruit you want in each cavity. Remove
the pieces from the cavities until you
are ready to pour the clear soap.
18. Weigh 30 oz. of Extra Clear soap
base. Cut up into chunks and place
in large glass measuring cup. Heat in
microwave until completely melted.
19. Add 26 ml. of fragrance and gently
mix in.
20. Spritz the fruit pieces for the frst soap
pop generously with alcohol and place
in the mold cavity.
21. Check temperature of clear soap to be
sure it is at or below 125 F. If it is too
hot, the fruit slices with melt.
22. Pour clear soap around the fruit slices
and spritz the top with alcohol.
23. Take fruit slices for next soap pop,
spritz generously with alcohol and
place in soap cavity.
24. Pour clear soap over these fruit slices
and spritz top with alcohol.
25. Continue in this manner until all soap
pops have been made. Place the lid for
the mold over the top and place the
soap pop sticks in each bar of soap.
Try to position the stick in between the
soap slices so the stick does not cover
them up.
26. Allow to completely set up before
unmolding. DO NOT GRAB STICK TO
REMOVE FROM MOLD. Gently press
on bottom of soap cavity until you can
see the soap release from the sides of
mold. Then gently push soap up and
out of cavity.
27. Wrap soap and label accordingly.

2. To make this product, you can heat either in a microwave or in a double boiler. If heating directly on stove top, use only low
heat.
3. Weigh sweet almond oil and place in glass mixing bowl. Weigh beeswax and candellila waxes and place in bowl with oil.
Place in microwave and heat until waxes are completely melted. CAREFUL: Bowl will be hot.
4. Or, place sweet almond oil and waxes into a double boiler. Heat until waxes are completely melted. Remove from heat.
5. If heating on stove top, place pan on low heat and heat oil and waxes until completely melted. Remove from heat.
6. To melted oil/wax mixture, add mango butter, sunfower oil and wheat germ oils. Let warm liquid melt butter. If mixture starts
to thicken up, place briefy on heat source to warm product.
7. Add Vitamin E and essential oil to mixture and blend together.
8. For ease in pouring, pour mixture into plastic beaker. Then, pour into shallow tins.
9. Once product has completely solidifed, place lid on and label accordingly.
10. TO USE: Rub cream into cuticle and all around nail area to moisturize.

2. You will need to make 4 separate batches of soap in a jelly roll pan to make these soaps.
3. Remove 2 lb. of soap from plastic soap tray. Cut 1 lb. (2 blocks) off of this 2 lb. tray.
4. Cut soap into small chunks and place in large glass measuring cup. Place in microwave and heat until soap is completely melted.
5. For Ocean Blue color, add 1 drop to melted soap. Add 1 Tbsp. (.5 oz) of fragrance oil and stir to incorporate.
6. Pour soap into jelly roll pan and let completely set up.
7. When soap has hardened, carefully remove from pan. Using a soap cutter, cut soap into various, rounded shapes. Each piece
will be different and unique.
8. Repeat above steps for the next color. Clear soap will have only fragrance oil, no color. Green soap should have 7 drops of
color and fragrance.
9. For amber color, mix .5 ml of Matte Brown Liquid Pigment and 6 drops of Sunfower Yellow Liquid Dye in a plastic beaker.
10. To 16oz. of clear soap, add 1 drop of amber color, 1 Tablespoon of fragrance and blend in. Pour into jelly roll pan and let soap
set up.
11. After each color is made, cut up into pieces as in step #8.
12. Using a scale, weigh 4 oz. of various colored soap. Place these into organza bags. All 4 trays of soap should yield approx. 16 -
4 oz. bags.
13. Label product accordingly.

as the oatmeal soap base has its own special fragrance.

2. Using the 4 plastic beakers, mix all colors, except gold mica, with 1 oz. of glycerin. Mix powder into liquid by hand, then use
mini-mixer to mix thoroughly.
3. In 5 small glass containers, melt 2 oz. of clear soap in each.
4. Add color mixture to each container of melted soap. The gold mica can be added directly into the melted soap.
5. Pour colored soap into the cavities of the Sea Life Deco-It Silicone Mold. Make the embeds whatever color you choose. Plastic
droppers can be used for small areas.
6. Once soap has set up, remove embeds from molds. Continue making enough embeds for 6 bars of soap.
7. Weigh 30 oz. of oatmeal soap base. Cut into small chunks and place in large glass measuring cup.
8. Heat in microwave until all soap has melted. Remove from microwave and stir.
9. Place square silicone mold on jelly roll pan. This gives stability to the mold should it need to be moved.
10. Pour the oatmeal soap into the 6 cavities flling each about 3/4 high.
11. Spritz the top of the oatmeal soap with alcohol to dissolve any surface bubbles.
12. Let soap harden.
13. To get 3-D affect the embeds are done in layers so they appear more separate.
14. Weigh 8 oz. of clear soap base and place in glass measuring cup. Heat until melted. Remove from microwave and stir.
15. Spritz top of frst cavity of soap with alcohol. Check temperature of soap so it is no hotter than 125 degrees. Pour a thin layer of
clear soap just enough to coat top of bar.
16. Quickly take frst layer of embeds, spritz with alcohol and place into melted clear soap.
17. Spritz again with alcohol.
18. Continue with remaining 5 bars until frst layer of embeds are fnished.
19. More clear soap will need to be melted as you go along.
20. Once this layer of soap has hardened, spritz again with alcohol.
21. Pour another thin layer of clear soap over embeds. Spritz second set of embeds and immediately place into clear soap. Spritz
again.
22. For top embeds, they can be completely covered or one embed can stick out slightly from bar, fnishing off the 3-D affect.
23. When pouring clear soap over top embeds, pour just enough to cover. If soap is poured too thick, embeds will be cloudy.
24. Finish top with fnal spritz of alcohol.
25. Once soap has hardened, carefully remove from mold and wrap immediately. To give soap a more fnished appearance, bevel
the top edges with a potato peeler.

2. In a plastic beaker, melt 1 oz. of clear soap in microwave. Add about 1/8 tsp. of Brown Sparkle Mica to melted soap and stir
well.
3. Tilt Scallop Shell Soap Mold at an angle to fll bottom design of shell. Using a plastic dropper, fll each area with the brown soap.
We suggest flling only one design at a time and let harden. This way the soap does not run out of the mold if it needs to be tilted
further.
4. In two separate glass measuring cups, melt 7oz each of white and clear soap. To the white soap (Three Butter Plus) add one half
of a teal blue soap cube. Stir until it completely dissolves. If necessary, heat soap more to melt color cube.
5. To each container of melted soap, add .21 oz (approx. 4 tsps) of fragrance oil. Stir to incorporate.
6. Place a book or other object under the top and bottom of the plastic mold. This will keep the mold from tipping when the soap is
poured into each cavity.
7. Spritz tops of brown soap in each shell with rubbing alcohol. Check soap temperature before pouring to be sure it is at or below
130F.
8. Taking the melted soap in each hand, begin to pour into the soap cavity at the same time. This will give the swirl affect to the
soap. Spritz top of each soap with alcohol when fnished.
9. The design of each soap will be a little different depending on how the soap is poured so each soap will be unique.
10. Once soap starts to thicken and get a flm on the top, place mold in freezer to completely set up. This will also help with
umolding.
11. After about 45 minutes, remove from freezer. Let sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes. Turn mold over and gently press
on each cavity to release the soap.
12. Repeat above steps to make second set of 3 soaps.
13. When all soaps are fnished, wrap and label accordingly.

Poppy Flowers MP Soap Recipe
Project Level: Easy
Yields: 12 - 2.10 oz. bars
These sweetly smelling poppy soaps will bring summer into any room in your
home.

INCI Ingredient List: Sodium Cocoate, Propylene Glycol , Sodium Stearate, Glycerin, Water,
Sorbitol, Goats Milk, Titanium Dioxide, Fragrance, Iron Oxides

Scale to Weigh Soap
Soap Cutter
Spray Bottle with Alcohol(for Spritzing)
Directions
2. Using a scale, weigh 9 oz. of the Detergent Free Goat Milk Soap base. Cut up into chunks and place in glass measuring cup.
3. Heat soap in microwave until melted. Heat for 30 seconds. Remove and stir. Continue for 10-15 second intervals if soap is not
completely melted.
4. Add 7 ml. fragrance oil and stir.
5. Place guest round silicone on cookie sheet for stability. Pour melted soap into 6 soap cavities. Spritz top of each with rubbing
alcohol to release any surface bubbles. Allow soap to set up.
6. Weigh 12 oz. of the Detergent Free Clear Soap base. Cut into chunks and place in large glass measuring cup. Heat in microwave
until soap is completely melted.
7. Once melted, add 10 ml. of fragrance oil and 2 Tbsp. liquid glycerin. Stir gently.
8. Pour out a small amount of the clear soap, about .5-1 oz, and set aside in plastic beaker. (This will be for the black centers of the
poppies).
9. To remaining 11 oz. of clear soap, add desired amount of Matte Americana Red.
10. Once this color is mixed, pour into a thin layer covering the Jelly Roll Pan. Spritz with alcohol and allow to set up.
11. Unmold white soap from guest round cavities and set aside. Wash and dry soap mold for next step.
12. To small beaker of clear soap poured earlier, add desired amount of Matte Black powder. (If soap has hardened, remelt before
adding color.)
13. Pour black soap into 2-3 of the round cavities. These should also be fairly thin layers of soap. Spritz with alcohol and allow to set
up.
14. Once the red soap has hardened, remove entire piece from the Jelly Roll pan. Then, use the Flower Cutters to cut out the shapes.
15. For each of our poppies, we used 2 of the large cutters, 2 of the medium and made the center using the smallest cutter. For the
center of the fower, cut out a hole in one of the medium fowers with the smallest fower cutter. The black center will slide right
into this hole.
16. Cut and assemble the fowers however you wish. To glue them together, melt the leftover red soap from the Jelly Roll pan.
Spritz the pieces with alcohol to ensure the soap pieces stick together. Use the melted soap as a glue to stick the pieces
together.
17. With remaining goat milk soap, you can make another 6 poppy fowers. There should be plenty of red soap left to cut out more
fowers.
18. Package soaps as desired and label accordingly.

Lips can get chapped even in the summer. Protect them with this moisturizing
lip gloss packed full of nourishing ingredients.

INCI Ingredient List: Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter and Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Butter
and Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, and Punica Granatum, Polyglycerol-3 Beeswax,
Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Tocopherol, Flavor,
Saccharin, Mica (and) Iron Oxides

Directions
2. In a glass bowl, add 1 Tablespoon of the Smooth & Creamy Lotion Bar Additive and entire 2oz. jar of Pomegranate Butter Blend.
3. Place bowl in microwave and heat until wax has melted. Set microwave power to 50%. Wax may take a few minutes to
completely melt. If preferred, wax can also be melted in a double boiler.
4. When wax has melted, remove from heat.
5. Add ingredients: 1 oz. (2 Tbsp) Castor Oil, 1 oz. (2 Tbsp) Grape Seed Oil, and 4 ml Vitamin E and stir.
6. Add 2 ml. Raspberry Sweetened Flavor Oil and .5 ml Liquid Saccharin and stir product.
7. Add Crimson Sparkle Mica Powder. To color product only, add about 1/8 teaspoon. To show color on the lips, about 1/2
teaspoon needs to be added. Ths color will settle when adding this much mica powder.
8. To lessen the settling, stir product frequently and let gloss start to slightly thicken. This will help keep powder mixed in.
9. Pour gloss into 12 jars and let product cool. Once cooled, place lids on jars and label accordingly.

2. Using a soap slicer, cut clear soap into 1-2 inch pieces. The soap slicer is dull and perfect for this project. Do not use a knife as it
is very sharp and the soap is slippery. The knife could slip causing injury.
3. Place 8 oz of oatmeal soap in a microwave safe glass container and heat for 30 seconds. Stir well. Repeat until soap is
completely melted.
4. Pour 1/4 of oatmeal soap into each mold cavity. Allow to cool until frm.
5. Using a microwave safe glass container, place 16 oz of clear soap in a microwave and heat for 30 seconds. Stir well. Repeat
until soap is completely melted.
6. Add 1/2 oz of fragrance and 1 cube of red color. Stir until fragrance is fully incorporated and color cube is melted.
7. Once oatmeal soap is frm, spritz with rubbing alcohol. Set luffa on top of oatmeal soap.
8. Immediately pour the red soap over the luffa and until the cavity is full.
9. Allow to return to room temperature and remove from mold.
10. Wrap in inexpensive plastic wrap. Pull tightly for extra clarity and to remove plastic wrap ripples.
11. If you are selling your soap, dont forget to label the soap to complete the package. Label according to FDA cosmetic label
guidelines.

1. Melt coconut oil, Babassu oil and mango butter in a stainless steel pot.
Now add room temperature oils to the pot. Next stir in rice milk to
the melted oils and butters. If it curdles, use a stick blender to smooth
it out. Note: Adding the milk to the oils typically helps the milk from
overheating and can result in a lighter colored (not dark brown) bar of
soap.
2. Carefully add lye to water. This is an extra strong lye solution since we
added part of the liquid (rice milk) to the oils.
3. At desired temperatures, add lye solution to oils and butters
(recommended temperature is around 100F or cooler for milk soaps).
If milk in oils looks curdled, stick blend again before adding the lye
solution. Bring to light trace. Add fragrance and chamomile. Stir until
both are incorporated completely. Pour into molds.
4. Let sit overnight and cover with plastic wrap to prevent any soda ash.
Unmold and slice. Let cure for 4 weeks before use.

Ingredients
7.5 oz. Frozen/Slushy Goatsmilk
13.5 oz. Lye
26.8 oz. Coconut Oil
14.4 oz. Shea Butter
28.8 oz. Olive Oil
19.2 oz. Sweet Almond Oil
6.72 oz. Saffower Oil
2 oz. Lemon Essential Oil

1. Freeze goatsmilk overnight. Remove from freezer and let sit until icy and slushy.
2. In the meantime, melt coconut oil and shea butter in a stainless steel pot. Now add room temperature oils to
the pot.
3. Weigh goatsmilk into pitcher. Prep ice bath and submerge pitcher of goatsmilk so that it is steady and wont
tip over. Very slowly add lye, a little at a time (about 3 Tbsp. approx) and stir slowly. Continue adding the
lye slowly and stirring until all lye is dissolved. Make sure that there arent any dark yellow clumps of lye. If
you see any, just press them against the side of the pitcher or stir them until dissolved.
4. The goatsmilk will turn sunshine yellow and may smell slightly like ammonia. The smell will dissipate. Note: If
you add the lye too quickly the goatmilk will heat up and turn orange. The proteins may separate and you
can end up with soap that smells of strong ammonia. This will result in a dark brown soap.
5. At desired temperatures, add lye solution to oils and butters (recommended temperature is around 100F
or cooler for milk soaps). Bring to light trace and add essential oils and comfrey. Stir until both are
incorporated completely and pour into molds.
6. Let sit overnight and cover with plastic wrap to prevent any soda ash. Unmold and slice. Let cure for 4
weeks before use.

How to Hire the Perfect Employee
If I suggested that you hire two new employees this week what would your response be? Let
me guess: I cant afford it, or its more trouble than its worth. Those are the two most
frequent responses I hear from my business clients. And Im here to tell you that neither is true.
Today were going to take a look at the latter: why does it feel like hiring and training
employees causes so much pain? In most cases its because the entrepreneur is using a poor
model for the hiring process. In fact, many business owners have no model at all. These new
hires usually dont work out if they are determined solely by skills and experience. This not
only cost time and money, its frustrating to the entrepreneur, leaving them with the belief that
employees simply are not worth the effort.
But nothing is farther from the truth. The problem is that hiring managers (thats probably
you) are basing their decisions on what they see on the resume. But skills can often be
trained. Emotional intelligence and personality type come from an innate ability coupled with life experience. You cannot train
for emotional intelligence! If you hire an account manager with the hard skills necessary to manage your clients accounts but he
is adverse to deadlines and has a limited ability to handle a confict, its a recipe for disaster. As another example, if you hire
a customer service representative who can fawlessly enter one hundred orders in an hour but has no patience or tolerance for
diffcult customers, you wont have to worry about order entry mistakes!
To hire the right person for the right job, begin by assessing the personal qualities that your ideal employee would possess. If you
are hiring a coder, you want this person to be focused, analytical, and creative. Yes, creative! The best coders are problem-solvers
and that takes creativity!
If you are hiring for a sales position youll want someone who is a connector. They are personable, driven, and a great communicator.
What are some fun questions you can ask your candidates to fnd out more about their personality and work ethic? Here are a few
of my favorites. Adding this piece to your hiring puzzle will bring you much closer to your dream team!
Question 1.
Using your imagination, create your ideal co-worker. Tell me about that person. What would they be like?
Whats interesting about this question is that your candidate is very likely to describe themselves! This will give you great insight to
their work ethic and personal characteristics.
Question 2.
If you came with a warning label what would it say?
This question catches people so off guard that they blurt out the most honest responses, including those they would never admit to
in an interview!
Question 3.
How would people communicate in a perfect world?
If your candidate responds by saying, by email only and you are hiring for a sales position, you know this wont work! Or if you
require this position to report weekly to and about the client and they prefer texting, you will have a problem. Communication is
key to success. Understanding how your employees best learn and communicate is a must. If your candidates style is not a match,
move on to the next.
Go ahead; make up a few of your own questions. Make the process fun and challenging. This will give your candidates an inside
look at your fun and creative company culture, they may love itor they may not. Either way upfront knowledge is the golden ticket
to hiring success!

your ideas get a big thumbs down, little failures early on provide the necessary knowledge to make course corrections before

2. Prioritize the skills you pay for.

own, youll save loads of energy, time and money, by recognizing what you do well, and what is worth spending money for someone
else to handle. To that end, evaluate the tasks that require an actual human against those that might be made quite do-able with the

3. Minimize hard copy costs.

customer who disputes a charge with Visa or MasterCard can cost a small business at least $25 per event. Interestingly, all of the
primary reasons such disputes arise (customers dont recognize the merchant name on a credit card statement, expectations werent
met, or the refund policy was unclear), are easily prevented. Review your product and service descriptions in your marketing materials
and website and ensure youve done your due diligence: Are product functions, features, materials, colors and services named,
described and depicted accurately? Do you clearly state the process for returns, exchanges, and price adjustments at checkout--
before the customer completes the purchase? Lastly, is the name youve registered with your credit card processor congruent with
your business name? If its not, add language on the checkout page so the customer knows how the purchase will be refected on

moneymakers, especially for those who
need extra income after they retire from
their full-time careers.
Many have taken their hobbies and made
them into giant businesses. Alexandra
Ferguson started by making a couple
of custom throw pillows for a friends
birthday. She made around 30 more to
give as Christmas presents that year. Just a
few years later, she ditched her old job and
is predicting annual revenues of a million
dollars. Niche products have an advantage
because you can focus on specifc markets
and demographics.
Most of us have hobbies and some of
them have the potential to bring in cash
at some point in our lives. In all cases,
do thorough research on your local laws,
zoning restrictions, licensing and insurance
requirements, and tax implications before
getting started. Out of hundreds of options,

Before you head down the trail blazed by

If youve got the skills, enjoy cooking and
have some secret recipes that have been
handed down in your family, this is a way
to turn all that into cash with a small initial
investment. Stick with just a few specialty
products and make yourself known. Local
farmers markets and food fairs are a good
way to get started.
Dance Instructor
Television shows like Dancing with the Stars
and So You Think You Can Dance have
popularized and rekindled interest in all
types of dancing. If you enjoy dancing and
have taken lessons in the past, you may be
able to parlay that into a steady income.
You dont have to be an expert to teach
beginners, and you dont have to own a
dance studio. Some existing studios will
rent their dance foor during their downtime

Photographer
The opportunities for photography are
almost limitless, but youll have to invest
in high-quality equipment. Freelance

for a contracted period and specifed

People will pay for quality handmade
items of solid wood. If youve got a shop
in the garage and the necessary tools,
theres a ready made market for wood
furniture and custom-designed wooden
objects. Theres also a sizable need for
the refnishing and restoration of all things
made of wood including antique boats and
furniture. If youre a woodcarver with a
good imagination, you can create all sorts
of things to sell at craft shows and online at
websites like eBay.
Coach
You dont have to coach a professional
sports team to make some serious money
in a sport that you love. If youre qualifed,
you can work year-round coaching seasonal
sports. The requirements at public and
private schools vary by location, but there
are also opportunities at country clubs
and youth clubs such as the YMCA. These
include sports that arent continuously in the
limelight such as volleyball, swimming,
badminton, and track. You can also
freelance as a personal coach to athletes
who want one-on-one training. Depending

What to do
Turning your hobby into money takes some
planning and marketing. While the creative
part can be lots of fun, its important that
the business side is locked down before
you get yourself in too deep. Put together
a system for tracking your expenses and
sales, and devise a method for setting your
pricing structure. Design a creative logo
and packaging scheme to attract maximum
attention.
Social media and online advertising have
made it easier and cheaper to get the word
out. Join online discussion groups that are
interested in your products and use those
to promote your work. Professional photos
also go a long way in showcasing your
products and driving sales. Personally
interact with the local media, volunteer
some of your services, and engage the
chamber of commerce. Word-of-mouth
goes a long way to help get you started.
Websites such as eBay offer great platforms
to sell products with minimal overhead cost
to you. The website of choice for crafts is
Etsy, essentially the handmade version of
eBay. Craft fairs, galleries, fea markets,
and state and county fairs rent space where
you can set up a sales booth. You can
also host home-based fairs for friends and
acquaintances who can spread the word.
At some point you may think of taking your
hobby full time. Most have found the best
way to do that is by easing into it. Test the
waters and put together a business plan
before making the fnal leap.

GMP and Ingredients
Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) are the practices and
procedures used in manufacturing that ensure a good fnished
product. The ingredients you select and use are obviously key
to a high-quality fnished product; therefore how you specify,
purchase, approve, handle, store, track and use your ingredients
is an integral part of Good Manufacturing Practices.
The following guidelines outline best practices for your ingredients.
Whether you work out of your kitchen and store your ingredients
in a designated shelf or cupboard, or have a dedicated shop,
with a little thought and planning these guidelines can easily be
adapted for any situation.
1. Specify the ingredient criteria fully.
Often the ingredients listed in a recipe are somewhat generalized
and when it comes to actually purchasing the item, you are
faced with options. For example, your recipe calls for Lavender
Fragrance. Is that Lavender 40/42 essential oil? Bulgarian
Lavender essential oil? Lavender fragrance oil? A combination?
Obviously the end product changes based on which lavender
you choose.
Having exactly specifed criteria is especially important when an
ingredient can come in several different forms under the same
name. Cornstarch, for example, comes in various grades, particle
sizes and treatments (all of which are called cornstarch). Which
one you use can drastically change your product. You wouldnt
want a coarse or rough particle size for face or body powders,
but it might be okay for bath products or as a thickening agent.
GMP Guidelines call for defning the following for every
ingredient (or packaging material) you use:
A. Description. What does the ingredient/material look like?
Feel like? Smell like? What color should it be? How big or
small are the particles? A detailed description is especially
essential when dealing with botanicals.
B. Critical Criteria. What criteria MUST be met in order to
use the item at all? This is generally criteria that if not
met would make the product unsafe or unusable, or which
are legally required. Example: negative for eColi and
Salmonella.
C. Major Criteria. What is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT criteria?
This would be criteria that if not met could affect product
quality or result in a lower quality product. Examples:
Cornstarch particle size, purity of lye for soap, or whether
a botanical is fresh or dried.
D. Minor Criteria. What criteria SHOULD be met? These
are things that should be met, but wont adversely affect
product quality. Example: Whiteness level of cornstarch.
Setting exact criteria ensures that when you select an item to
purchase, you know exactly what you need and can make sure
you get the same ingredient every time, regardless of the supplier
you purchase from.
2. Select a qualifed supplier.
Select and approve suppliers for that ingredient in advance,
and only purchase that
ingredient from suppliers
who have been approved
for that particular
ingredient.
While price is an important
factor, also consider
customer service, return
policy, shipping policy,
and the information
provided by the supplier (including technical specifcations,
quality assurance, usage information and MSDS sheets) when
approving a supplier for an ingredient.
3. Assign a lot number to every ingredient/material received.
When you receive an ingredient or packaging material, assign
it a lot number. It can be anything that will uniquely identify the
EXACT order you received. Keep in mind that if you receive 4
oz. of Lavender essential oil on Monday and another 4 oz of
Lavender essential oil on Friday, they are two different lots and
should have different lot numbers assigned to them.
Be sure to record the supplier invoice number and date as well as
the supplier lot number (if any) so you can trace your lot number
back to the exact order from the supplier.
4. Check and approve each incoming lot before using.
Every time an order is received, check the ingredient/material
carefully to ensure it meets your specifcations. Look at the
shipping box is it damaged at all? Did you receive what you
ordered? Does the ingredient meet your critical, major and
minor criteria? Keep a written record of what you fnd.
If the ingredient is acceptable, approve it for use. If not, set it
aside away from approved ingredients and appropriately
handle.
5. Organize Stored Ingredients.
Keep all your approved ingredients stored in such a way that
you can easily identify what they are, the lot number and the
expiration date (if any). If the ingredient is repackaged into a
different container, label it clearly. Dont combine different lots
of the same ingredient!
6. Record the ingredient Lot Number when used in a product
batch.
When you make a batch of product, make sure to record the Lot
Number of every ingredient used in the batch.
Summary
By implementing these steps, you will have certainty that every
ingredient you use in your products has met your quality standards
and you will have taken a signifcant step toward making sure
your end products are of the highest quality every batch, every
bar or bottle, every time.

Summer means visits to the beach, strappy sandals and fip-fops. The change to open-styled
footwear, however, can also lead to dry, cracked feet. No one wants rough looking soles
to be the focal point of their summer vacation, but traditional body scrub formulas have a
tendency to be too oily and not gritty enough for the thick skin found on our feet.

This formula incorporates thickening agents to help emulsify the oil content, lending to a stiffer
overall product that is less oily than formulas created for use on the body. Powdered pumice
has been combined with ultra-fne dendritic salt to provide a grittier skin-feel. Dendritic salt
has an amazing capacity to absorb oil, so it also assists in keeping the scrub ingredients from
separating.

Although there is no water in the actual formula, the end user can contaminate the product by storing it in the shower or dispensing
product with wet hands. For these reasons, a preservative has been incorporated to protect against contamination and to provide
a longer shelf-life.
