Explaining ASEAN Regionalism in South East Asia

Shaun Narine
Narine, Shaun stated that ASEAN forms the basis of a regional community of Southeast
Asian states. ASEAN embodies fundamental norms, values, and practices that have, over time,
socialized the ASEAN states into adopting a shared regional identity. Also ASEAN is an
instrument of its member states. The organization is designed to pursue the narrow self-interests
of its member states. ASEAN identity is relatively weak in comparison to other identities.

ASEAN: The first 20 years

ASEAN is a regional grouping of independent nations who have come together as equals
for a common purpose. The ASEAN logo represent six sheaves of rice stalks, one for each
member country. They are colored brown with the word ASEAN in blue at the bottom. These
are imposed on a yellow background encompassed by a blue circle. It symbolizes the solidarity
of its member and their commitment to work together for peace and prosperity in the region. The
three colors: brown for strength and stability, yellow for prosperity, and blue for friendship.
A significant feature of the common history of the nations which now comprise ASEAN
was the invasion of the Western colonial powers in Southeast Asia and their domination of all
but one of the ASEAN countries. Each of these colonized countries developed differently,
evolving social and political system modeled on those of their Western rulers. Thailand remained
free and independent of colonial domination. But even their institutions were deeply affected
during the period of Western pre-eminence
ASEAN was formed with three main objectives in mind: to promote the economic, social
and cultural development of the region through co-operative programmers; to safeguard political
and economic stability of the region against Big Power rivalry; and to serve as a forum for the
resolution of intra-regional differences.

ASEAN Functional Cooperation: Toward a Caring Community
Jamil Maidan Flores
ASEAN talked about peace not only among themselves but also with other countries that
had interests in and relevance to the region. They took plans to promote peace not only in
Southeast Asia but also in the larger Asia-Pacific region. By doing these, they have gained a
great deal of respect among other nations and regions. These activities they call Political
Cooperation.
They are also trying to help one another to increase their capacity to produce and sell
goods and services, to create wealth and opportunities for employment of their peoples. These
activities they call Economic Cooperation.
