National:

Modi scraps GoMs, EGoMs
Signalling a break from the past, the Narendra Modi government announced the abolition of all Groups
of Ministers (GoMs) and Empowered Groups of Ministers (EGoMs) for greater accountability and
empowerment.Nine EGoMs and 21 GoMs were set up by the previous UPA government to take
decisions on various matters such as corruption, inter-State water disputes, administrative reforms and
gas and telecom pricing, before bringing them for the Cabinets consideration.

UPA flagship scheme to be rejigged
As part of its 100-day agenda, the Modi government has set the ball rolling on redesigning the Mahatma
Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. The objective is to ensure that the assets
created under the scheme augment rural productivity, besides providing jobs to unskilled rural labourers.
The Modi government plans to leverage the redesigned MGNREGS for development of villages. The BJ P
manifesto promised to link the scheme to agriculture.

Council for Krishna, Godavari projects
Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti will chair an apex council to supervise the water projects on the
Krishna and the Godavari. The panel will have the Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana as
its members. The apex council would be constituted shortly and would oversee the functioning of the
Krishna River Management Board and the Godavari River Management Board. Both the boards, for now,
will be headquartered at Hyderabad.

Hi-tech NASA sandals to collect data from space
NASA has sent a pair of sandals with tiny devices into space that will help scientists monitor the effects of
low gravity on astronauts bodies. A crew of Russian, German and US astronauts docked with the
International Space Station (ISS) brought with them some NASA-designed footwear called ForceShoes.
The shoes will help NASA collect data for studying the loads or force placed on crew member bodies
during exercise on the space stations Advanced Resistive Exercise Device (ARED).The brown strap-on
shoes with tiny monitoring devices will send data back to control centres on earth. Researchers will use
the shoe to measure exercise loads and ground reaction forces.

International:

China wary of Japans proactive role
J apans moves to take a more proactive security role in Asia, outlined by Prime Minister Shinzo Abes
offer to supply Vietnam and the Philippines with naval patrol vessels, has brought a wary response from
China, which is embroiled in maritime disputes with the three countries.

Nisha Biswal to visit New Delhi
U.S. Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal will travel to New Delhi
where, during J une 6-9, she will aim to kick-start bilateral cooperation with the new BJ P-led Indian
administration, after a lull of several months in this space. Ms. Biswal would meet a range of officials in
Narendra Modis administration, there was no mention of any plan to meet the Prime Minister himself.

World Milk Day: Amul catches fancy of GenNext
In 2013, Gujarat, the cradle of India's White Revolution, had beaten Punjab in milk production and
emerged as the country's fourth largest milk producing state. Gujarat's milk production has risen to 269
lakh litre per day, pushing Punjab to the fifth slot with more than 261 lakhlitre milk production per day.All
this was possible with the efforts of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which
owns and markets brand Amul. GCMMF presently procures over 164 lakh litre milk per day and has
broken its own record of 2012 when it had procured more than 140 lakh litre milk per day.

Tough balancing act
The Reserve Bank of Indias credit policy review, will be the first after the new government has taken
charge. It is also the second bi-monthly policy for the current year (2014-15). The RBI has switched to the
system of reviewing credit policy once in two months from the earlier once in 45 days or so following the
recommendation recommendation of the Urjit Patel committee.
