Date of Distribution:13-08-2014 Date of Submission: 19-08-2014

Q. No 1(a) Explain in brief the material properties of Plain Cement Concrete with reference to
Engineering considerations. How is material performance of plain concrete improved ?
(b) Explain various types of reinforcing steel bars commonly used for RCC design.
(c) Sketch and describe stress- strain curves [typical] for M25 Grade Concrete, Fe 250
[ Mild Steel Grade I], Fe 415 HYSD [CTD] and Fe 415 S HYSD [TMT] Rebars.
(d) Enlist the basic attributes of a good engineering design. What are the different design
philosophies for the design of reinforced concrete structures? State characteristic
differences amongst them.
(e) Determine the value of Static Modulus of Elasticity of concrete , Flexural Strength of
concrete and modular ratio of RCC, if materials used are M30 Grade concrete and
Fe 415D Rebars .

Q.No.2(a) State the assumptions of Working Stress Method of Reinforced Concrete Design.

(b) Define the terms: - (i) Permissible Stresses (ii) Moment of Resistance (iii) Under
Reinforced Section (iv) Balanced Section (v) Over Reinforced Section.
(c) Sate the comparison amongst Under Reinforced Section, Balanced Section and Over
Reinforced RCC Sections .
(d) Derive expressions for M.R., depth of Neutral axis & % of steel for a balanced section
in WSM.
(e) What are transformed sections ? Obtain expressions for transformed sections for RCC
beams at service load for cracked & un-cracked concrete sections & uni-axially
loaded RCC columns.

Q.No.3 Determine the moment of resistance of a singly reinforced concrete beam of breadth
150 mm & effective depth 300 mm . The beam is reinforced with 2 bars of 16 mm
diameter of HYSD Fe 415 Grade Steel. Concrete used is M20 Grade. Use WSM.
(PTO)

Q.No.4 An RCC beam having (i) over all depth=700 mm, (ii) Clear Cover =30 mm & (iii)
width =350 mm is reinforced with 4 nos of bars of 25 mm diameter of HYSD Fe 500
Grade. The concrete used is M20 Grade. Using WSM determine:-
(a) Allowable Moment Capacity;
(b) Corresponding Stresses induced in concrete & steel;
(c) Stresses in concrete & steel if the section is subjected to a service load moment of
145 KNm.

Q.No.5 An RCC beam having 450[effective depth]x250[width] is reinforced with 3 nos of
bars of 16 mm diameter of HYSD Fe 500D Grade. The concrete used is M20 Grade.
Using WSM determine:-
(i) Allowable Moment Capacity.
(ii) Corresponding Stresses induced in concrete & steel.

Q.No.6 An RCC beam having 450[effective depth]x250[width] is reinforced with 2 nos of
bars of 16 mm diameter of HYSD Fe 500D Grade. The concrete used is M20 Grade.
Using WSM determine:-
(i) Allowable Moment Capacity.
(ii) Corresponding Stresses induced in concrete & steel.

Q.No. 7 A beam carries a uniformly distributed load( including self weight) of 30 kN/m on a
simply supported clear span of 6.0 m. Design a suitable section to resist the B.M
arising due to this load if it is supported on RCC columns of size 450x450mm. Also
determine allowable service load ( in kN/m) that the beam can carry. Use M20 Grade
of Concrete & Fe 500 Grade HYSD Rebars and WSM.

Q.No. 8 A cantilever beam supported on 300x450mm RCC Column has unsupported length of
2.8m and carries a uniformly distributed superimposed load of 15 kN/m.
Design a suitable section to resist the B.M arising due to this load. Use M20 Grade
of Concrete & Fe 500 Grade HYSD Rebars and WSM.
