Syllabus

Entrepreneurship & Small Business Management

Description/Purpose:
Since managers typically chart the course of a business, they play a vital role in its success or failure.
Therefore, it is vitally important that students of business learn to make decisions based on data, that
they develop leadership skills, and that they are able to select an appropriate management style for
each employee and situation. Further, they must develop an appreciation for customer analysis,
customer relations, promotion, and marketing of goods and services, and then use current technological
applications and software in conjunction with this information to make timely, rational decisions.
Finally, the manager must be able to communicate effectively in numerous types of situations using a
variety of media. In other words, the manager must have and be able to apply data from all the
functional and related areas of business.

Classroom Rules:
To help our class to run smoothly and to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn and succeed,
the following rules will be observed:
1. Be in your seat and ready to work with the bell rings. (See Addendum 1 below)
2. Bring all materials to class daily. (See Addendum 2 Below)
3. Respect and be polite to all people within the classroom.
4. Respect other peoples property.
5. Obey all school rules

Computer Use Policy:
Computer use will be limited to the following situations:
Taking notes
Completing assignments and projects that require the use of the computer
Participating in test reviews

State Goals:
As a result of taking this course, students will be able to:
1. Read with understanding and fluency.
2. Write to communicate for a variety of purposes.
3. Listen and speak effectively in a variety of situations.
4. Use the language arts to acquire, assess and communicate information.
5. Demonstrate and apply a knowledge and sense of numbers, including numeration and
operations, patterns, ratios, and proportions.
6. Estimate, make and use measurements of objects, quantities and relationships and determine
acceptable levels of accuracy.
7. Use algebraic and analytical methods to identify and describe patterns and relationships in data,
solve problems and predict results.
8. Promote and enhance health and well-being through the use of effective communication and
decision-making skills.

Course Content:
During the course of the semester we will complete the following units of study:

Unit 1: Introduction to Management & Inventory Management Weeks 1-3
Unit 2: Production & Operations Management Weeks 4-8
Unit 3: Human Resource Management Weeks 8-10
Unit 4: Obtaining Financing & Financial Record Keeping Weeks 13-16
Unit 5: Risk Management Weeks 16-17


Daily Work:
You will have assignments nearly every day of the semester. These assignments will consist of a variety
of written assignments and small group activities. These assignments and activities will include case
studies, brainstorming activities, mathematical problems, computer simulations, and worksheets. These
assignments and activities are important, as they allow you to gain practice working with concepts that
will ultimately allow you to do better on the projects and tests that you will complete during the course
of the semester.

Virtual Business:
During the course of the semester you will have the opportunity to work with the Virtual Business
Retailing & Management software. Virtual Business Retailing is a computer based simulation of a
convenience store that offers you hands on control over the management and marketing of a business.
You have control over every aspect of managing a business including pricing, location, merchandising,
and market research. Virtual Business Management is a computer simulation that focuses on human
resource management. You have control over the hiring and firing of employees in this highly
interactive simulation.

Projects:
Projects will also be a part of this course. During the course of the semester, the following projects will
be completed.

Weeks 2-3: Time Management Project
Week 4: PERT Diagramming Project
Week 6: Creating an Organizational Chart
Weeks 9-10: Human Resource Management Role Play Assignment
Weeks 10-17: Opening and Managing a Class Business
Week 17: Risk Management Project

Tests:
During the course of the semester, There will give 5 tests. They will be as follows:
Unit 1 Exam (Chapters 14-15): Week 3
Unit 2 Exam (Chapters 16-17): Week 8
Unit 3 Exam (Chapter 18) Week 10
Unit 4 Exam (Chapters 19-20) Week 16
Final Exam (Chapters 14-20, & 22) Finals Week
