“YOU CAN’T BEAT GOD GIVING”
There is an “old-school” gospel song,
which says: “You can’t beat God giving no
matter how hard you try. The more you give,
the more He’ll give to you. Just keep on
giving…because it’s really true!”
The words of that song are true. Our
members from all walks of life can testify over
and over again how God just outdoes God’s
self when we give. God shows up and shows
out!
Of course, the word of God came
through the Prophet Malachi 3,000 years ago
saying the same thing. God opens up the
windows of Heaven and pours us out blessings
that are too manifold and too powerful for us to
contain. God said that yet we don’t believe
that too often.
Since the double whammy of
Hurricane Katrina and the Federal
Government’s racist response to the poor
Blacks “left behind” in Louisiana, Mississippi
and Alabama, the members of this
congregation have been giving at an incredible
rate and have found out, once again, just how
true God is to God's word.
You have not just been giving your dollars -
although the amount of your gifts have been
incredible! (Just last Sunday you gave an
additional $41,000 to Katrina Relief !) Your
gifts of time, your gifts of food, water, hours of
service, physical presence and the offering of
your homes, your love and compassion to the
evacuees have been overwhelming!
In each instance, the more you have
given the more God has given back to us! I am
writing you to say, “Thank you.” I thank you
for your sacrifices.
Yes! We still have our school to build.
Yes! We still have our mortgage to pay off.
Yes! We still have our ministry that goes on.
Our brothers and sisters in Africa are
still depending on us in Saltpond, Ghana, in
Guguletu, South Africa, at the Steve Biko
Institute in Brazil and all around this world!

We still support financially the Trinity
United Church of Christ congregation in Gary,
Indiana and the Sankofa United Church of
Christ in Atlanta, Georgia. We still support the
Kenwood United Church of Christ here in
Chicago and the Advent Community United
Church of Christ in Columbus, Ohio.
We still support the United Negro
College Fund and we still lift offerings to
support our graduating high school seniors in
order that they might get a college education.
The work of our church goes on and the
ministry of our church goes on.
Yet, over and above what we normally
do and what it is we do routinely, you have
“stepped up to the plate” and demonstrated by
your sacrifices (material, physical and
financial), just what the Lord Jesus asked us to
demonstrate. Jesus said, “In as much as you
have done it unto the least of these my little
ones, you have done it upon to me!”
You keep doing for God and for that I
am grateful. You keep doing for the “least of
these,” and for that I am grateful. You keep on
giving and God keeps on giving back to you.
Thank you for who you are and thank you for
all that you do.

PREACHING AT MT. CALVARY
BAPTIST CHURCH!
Dr. Marcus Cosby, our beloved
colleague, our beloved friend and our son in
the ministry was born and raised at the Mt.
Calvary Baptist Church here in Chicago. In
the late 60s or early 70s, Mt. Calvary split and

Pastor Lacey Curry formed the Emmanuel
Baptist Church, which is now on Damen.
Pastor Cosby’s family went with
Pastor Curry and he finished his formative
years at Emmanuel; but Mt. Calvary was his
home church!
Mt. Calvary is preparing to celebrate
its 82nd year anniversary. Mt. Calvary is now
pastored by the Reverend Tyrone Crider. Mt.
Calvary is having four worship services to
celebrate their 82 years.
On Thursday, September 22, 2005, Dr.
Marcus Cosby will be preaching one of those
services at 7:00 p.m. at Mt. Calvary. Mt.
Calvary is located at 111th and Troop. Except
for our choir members who will be in
Sanctuary Choir rehearsal that Thursday
evening we are asking persons who are able to
support Pastor Cosby to be with him and to
share with him as he brings the Word of God
with power.

 TO DO JUSTICE
While FEMA and the government
failed the poor black and white people
affected by the broken levee in New Orleans,
the media outlook on white people going in
closed stores to find sustenance for themselves
and their families was deemed as people
seeking food. However, when a black person
was shown affected by the same
circumstances, and doing the same thing to
find sustenance for themselves and their
families, it was deemed as looting by the
majority of media outlets. What was the
difference? What changed?
Nothing changed. It has been the same
story since the founding of this country.
Racism is interwoven into every thread of life
in this country. The failure of the government
to send assistance to poor blacks in New
Orleans, as well as the characterization of
Blacks as looters while Whites search for food
is nothing more than what Dr. Marimba Ani
has coined as “Rhetorical Ethic.”
Rhetorical Ethic according to Dr. Ani
is defined as: Culturally structured European
Hypocrisy. It is a statement framed in terms
of acceptable moral behavior towards others
that is meant for rhetorical purposes only. Its
purpose is to disarm intended victims of
European cultural and political imperialism. It
is meant for “export” only. It is not intended
to have significance within the culture. Its

Just as the rhetorical ethic is found in
the racism that built this country, we can also
find the racial rhetorical, which exists in the
Bush Family. Upon viewing the living
conditions of those displaced persons in the
Houston Astrodome, Barbara Bush, the
mother of George Bush stated that those
conditions worked out well for them because
many of them were underprivileged anyway.
Now we see, in the words of Kanye West,
why George Bush doesn’t care about Black
people. He was taught that Blacks are not
people for which to be cared.
