MATHEMATICS PAPER I

SECTION B (33 marks)

Answer any THREE questions in this section and write your answers in the
spaces provided. Each question carries 11 marks.

Figure 1

In Figure 1, VA, VB and VC are the legs of a camera tripod, each of length
1.2 m. ABC is an equilateral triangle of side 1.2 m on a horizontal ground.
D is the mid-point of BC. The point G is vertically below V and divides
AD in the ratio 2:1.
(a) Find
(i) the height of V above the ground,
(ii) the angle between the plane VBA and the plane VBC.
(6 marks)
(b) Each leg of the tripod is then extended to 1.5 m and the positions of
A, B and C are fixed. Let H be the new position of the camera. Find
(i) ∠ABH,
(ii) the height of H above the ground.

Figure 2

In Figure 2, AB is a diameter of a circle with centre O and BFC is the

tangent at B. AC meets the circle at D and AF meets the circle at E.
(a) Name two triangles which are similar to ∆ABF.
(2 marks)
(b) Prove that AB 2 = AE⋅AF.
Hence find AF if AB = 20 and EF = 1.
(4 marks)
(c) A rectangular coordinate system is now introduced so that the
coordinates of A and B are (0, 5 ) and (0, – 5 ) respectively. Find
the slope of AF. Find the coordinates of D if AB = BC.

16. Gary is going to buy a flat. His monthly salary is $45 000 with total monthly
expenses $21 000. He then applies for a mortgage loan from a bank. The interest
rate the bank offered is 5% p.a. with a monthly repayment of $659.9 per $100000
loan amount.
Suppose he would like to pay 30% as down payment (i.e. 30% of the price of the
flat) with the loan repaid over a period of 20 years.
(a) Find the maximum amount of mortgage loan that he can apply, correct to the
nearest 100000. (1 mark)

(b) Find the maximum price of the flat ($P) he can afford, correct to the nearest
million. (1 mark)

(c) Suppose he has bought a flat priced at $P (round to the nearest million).
(i) Find the monthly repayment.

(ii) Complete the following table : (round off answers to 1 decimal place)
Month Interest Principal Outstanding loan
payment ($) payment ($) ($)
1 14583.3 8513.2 3491486.8

2 14547.9

As time passes by, how is the portion of monthly payment for interest
changed ?
(iii) It is given that the outstanding loan for the nth month is :
5% n 5% n −1 5% n − 2 5%
${ Q(1 + ) − R[(1 + ) + (1 + ) + L + (1 + ) + 1]}
12 12 12 12
where $Q is the amount of the mortgage loan and $R is the monthly
repayment. Find by which month the outstanding loan is less than 2
million.

17. Centup is a dice game for two or more players. To play Centup, an ordinary die
numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 is used. The rules are
1. When it is his turn, a player may throw the die as many times as he likes, or
until a ‘1’ is thrown.
2. If a ‘1’ is thrown, the player’s total is zero for that turn.
3. If he decides to stop before throwing a ‘1’, the total of the numbers thrown
during his turn is added to his score.
4. The first player whose score reaches (or passes) 100 is the winner.
(For example, David’s score is 49. He throws ‘2’, ‘6’ and decides to stop. His total
for this turn is 8 and his score becomes 57. John’s score is 55. He throws ‘3’, ‘5’,
‘4’, ‘1’, so that his score remains at 55.)
(a) Suppose that your score at Centup is now 96 and it is your turn.
(i) What is the probability that you will win with just one throw of the die?
(ii) Suppose that you take two throws to win. One way of doing this is to
throw first a ‘2’, and then a ‘3’. This can be written [2, 3].
List all the possible outcomes, including [2, 3], which lead to a win in
exactly two throws.
(iii) What is the probability that you win with exactly two throws ?
(iv) Suppose that you decide to keep throwing until either you have thrown
a ‘1’ or have won. What is the probability that you will not win the
game during this turn ? (6 marks)
(b) John and David play the game and their scores are both 96. In the next two
rounds, both of them decide to keep throwing until either he has thrown a ‘1’
or has won. John is the first in each round.
(i) Find John’s chance of winning within the next two rounds.
(ii) Given that one of them wins within the next two rounds. Find the
probability that John is the winner. (5 marks)
