1. A tensile test was conducted on a mild steel bar.
The following data was
Obtained from the test:
a) Diameter of the steel bar = 3 cm
b) Gauge length of the bar = 20cm
c) Load at elastic limit = 250 kN
d) Extension at a load of 150 kN = 0.21 mm
e) Maximum load = 380 kN
f) Total extension = 60 mm
g) Diameter of rod at failure = 2.25 cm
Determine:
1. The Youngs modulus
2. The stress at elastic limit
3. The percentage of elongation
4. The percentage decrease in area.
2. Three bars made of copper; zinc and aluminium are of
equal length and have cross section 500, 700, and 1000
sq.mm respectively. They are rigidly connected at their
ends. If this compound member is subjected to a
longitudinal pull of 250 KN, estimate the proportional of
the load Carried on each rod and the induced stresses.

3. Three equally spaced rods in the same vertical plane
support a rigid bar AB. Two outer rods all of brass each
600 mm long and of 25 mm diameter. The central steel
rod is 800 mm long and 30mm in diameter. Determine the
forces in the bars due to an applied load of 120 KN
through the midpoint of the bar. The bar remains

4. The following results were obtained in a tensile test of
mild steel specimen of original diameter 20mm and a
gauge length of 40mm. At the limit of proportionality the
load was 80kN and the extension was 0.048mm. The
specimen yielded at a load of 85kN and the maximum
load withstood was 150KN. When the two broken parts
were fitted together the length between the gauge
markings was found to be 55.6mm and the minimum
diameter at the neck was 15.8mm.

5. A concrete cube of 150mm side is subjected to three
pairs of axial forces on the three pairs of faces along the
three mutually perpendicular axes x, y and z axis. The
forces along x and z directions are tensile while the
force along the y direction is compressive. If Px =54 KN,
Py=72 KN and Pz =36 KN, E =12.5 KN/mm

a. A hollow cylinder 2m long has an outside diameter
of 50mm and inside diameter of 30mm. If the
cylinder is carrying a load of 25kN, find the stress
in the cylinder . Also find the deformation of the
cylinder. if the value of modulus of elasticity for
the cylinder material is 100Gpa.
b. A load of 5kN is to be raised with the help of a
steel wire. Find the minimum diameter of the wire,
if the stress is not to exceed 100Mpa.

subjected to tension and explain about the salient points

subjected to axial load as follows:
480 kN tensile in X-direction 1000 kN compressive force

modulus of elasticity of the material E, the strains in the
