UWC-USAS ANNUAL SOCCER MATCH:

NOT ONLY A GAME

DUC LE('15)
After the first week of classes, in a Montezumas sunny day, UWC-USA
organized successfully the annual friendly soccer match between 1
st
and
2
nd
year student. This is one of the most expected activities in school
year, which was attractive the whole college to come and support in many
years since it was established.
From dawn, the campuss atmosphere was charged by excitement. May
be everyone had had a sleepless night to look forward to the match and
clock was going to the important time. Other works were done so quickly
and it seems that everything was ready.
At the beginning of match, the 2
nd
students appeared suddenly from the
Castle and came to the field with confidence of experienced players. The
other side, our 1
st
team had gathered so early and they were really excited
about the coming competition. Today, experience will fight with the
power of youth to find who is the winner.
A whistle resounded, the game began under blazing heat of sun, but heat
on the field was more than that. Not only boys, but also our girls took part
in this match with 100% enthusiasm, and they were professional like any
boys. Wonderful, incredible shoots, passes, tackles, saves, crossings, etc
appeared so much making the game more exciting than what you can
imagine. Outside the pitch, supporters of both team shouted and
encouraged their one eagerly, promoted attraction to high and high. So
many dangerous situations were created. However, the only thing that
everyone was waiting, a goal, had not come.
Finally, what will be will be. Sixth minute of the match, after receiving a
good pass of teammate, Connor Fox finished spectacularly, put 1
st
year
team ahead. Six minutes later, Morgan, one of the best players of 1
st
year,
scored and doubled distance for his team. At that time, 2
nd
year team
looked like waked up from sleep. They attacked and put opponents goal
in emergency. At 38
th
minute, Otto van Wassenaer shot in target and
maked a beautiful goal, kindled hope again for his team. However, 2-1
was the result of 1
st
half.
The match became more dynamic than ever when 2
nd
half started. Team
of 2
nd
year students attacked patiently to find a goal. Meanwhile, Firsties
were calm to resist any danger. Strain lasted about 25 minutes before 4
th

goal appeared. After a mistake led to a penalty for 2
nd
years, on the
penalty spot, Liam Brown did not make any error, scored a goal to
equalize result. All 2
nd
year students burst out shouting in happiness and
thought of an amazing victory. However, 6 minutes later, once again, 1
st

year team went ahead by an own goal of Saliou, when he was making an
effort to save the ball. Now, balance was broken and may be, victory
would be belonging to 1
st
years. But only following 6 minutes, Micha
Kretschmann defined the finally result of that match, it was 3-3.
Although no team won the game, this result pleased everyone. We
reached aim, which we want to gain when we decided to organize this
game. Team spirit is more and more developed after this match.
Furthermore, we also improved unity of school, thanks to our teams
enthusiasm and friendliness. It was not a serious game, only an
interesting activity in order to make us closer. Because, anyway, we are a
big FAMILY.
