Presidents Message Presidents Message Presidents Message Presidents Message

SPRING some warmth longer daylight hours thermals and magpies!
Welcome back to some good flying weather. Looking forward to some
relaxing (and safe) flying and camaraderie.
Were continuing to progress in respect of the shelters but there are steps
still to be taken.
Heli flyers are now out in force and youll note an upcoming opportunity to
be tested for Bronze Wings.
The Heli Pad is ONLY for hovering practice, and if the wind allows, please
stand at the south west corner, ie closest to the toilet block. For more adventurous flying:
fly over the strip
keeping to the NORTH
give other pilots plenty of notice before you take off so they have the opportunity to land before you
take off, if that is their choice.
A number of pilots are now doing the above and its working well, with folk cooperating and happy to
accommodate each others different flying needs. If you have any concerns or suggestions, speak to me or any
of your committee members. If the sky is busy, arrange between yourselves mutually convenient timeslots for
different flying styles.
On another matter, I have a VERY big concern about non-members flying at our field, either when no-one is
about, or when members are present.
Genuine trainees can attend and fly under a mentor TWICE in a year, so they get to check us out before deciding
whether or not to join us.
Members of other clubs (and thus insured with MAAA) who are flying as a guest and WITH a DAC member
and UNDER THEIR GUIDANCE may fly TWICE in a year with us and must complete the Visitors book.
They may NOT fly alone.
In the mornings particularly, non members are flying alone or beside DAC members. This is against our rules,
against council and insurance requirements. To allow it to happen puts us ALL AT RISK OF LOSING THE
CLUB, and thus you are not doing yourself or your fellow club members any favours by not doing something
about it.
You may have the opportunity to quietly and in a friendly fashion advise the offender that they cant fly if
contrary to the above, and if you can then please do so and tell me/a committee member too. However I
recognise this is not always possible or comfortable, and we are not requiring you to do so.
HOWEVER we ask that you INFORM ME OR ANYONE ON THE COMMITTEE (your confidentially will
be respected) so we can TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT US FROM POTENTIALLY LOSING THE CLUB.
The info that will assist includes: date; time; who (if known); what was flown; description of person / plane / car
and car rego.
I will be very disappointed (upset*) if folk allow this to continue without reporting it and this may be regarded as
conduct prejudicial to the interests of the club. (*I figure youd better know my feelings on this BEFORE an
event, because youll certainly know about them AFTER one.)
I trust you will all appreciate the importance of the above and that we can all count on your support and
cooperation.
I trust you also appreciate the importance of being on good terms with our neighbours. If you have any concerns
or are not sure to do in any situation, RING me. My number is on the clubhouse.
Fly safe and fly often. Cheers Ian Pullar. 0425 831 572

Etiquette When Visiting Other Clubs
(Extract from the VMAA)

1. When visiting other clubs, introduce yourself, preferably to a committee member.
2. Show your current FAI card to prove you have insurance.
3. Present your valid heavy model permit if applicable.
4. Be signed into the visitors book.
5. Enquire what any local rules are before flying, and obey them, especially frequency
control.
6. At competition events, the Contest Director usually takes charge of these matters and
explains the details at the pilots briefing before flying starts.
7. Above all, treat the host club and its members with respect, and feel privileged you are
allowed to fly at their field.

NOTE Most clubs dont fly at all on days of declared Total Fire Ban.

By Saj Rahman

I was looking for a large scale model that's
easy to fly and also looks pretty and my
research lead me to the Chipmunk (its in the
eye of the beholder.). I immediately liked
the looks of the Hyperion Chipmunk 70e.
Although I would have preferred an IC
powered Chipmunk, I decided to get the
Hyperion Chipmunk 70e and see if it could
convert it to IC power. On advice from
Martin from the Club, I thought it would be
best to keep the plane electric powered for
which it was designed. Martin and Grant
from the Club advised on how I could save some money on the Motor, ESC and the Battery.

For the motor I got what came recommended with the plane, which is a Hyperion Z4025-
10. For the ESC I got TURNIGY Plush 80A w/ UBEC Speed Controller and for the
battery I got ZIPPY-R 4800mAh 25C 5S.

So I was all set. I put everything together and ready to fly.... except I dont have my Bronze
wings yet. Not to worry, Anthony Peate from the Club was nice enough to take the plane for
its maiden flight and I also got a chance to fly it. It flew exactly how I had hoped it would fly,
gentle and predictable. However, there were some problems with the plane. The Canopy fell
off twice mid flight and during take off, the plane had a tendency to tip its nose. Cliff advised
that pushing the landing gear a little forward should take care of the problem and Anthony
suggested I use stronger magnets to hold the canopy in place. Later in the week Martin sent
me an email of an earlier review of the same plane by Andy Hollitt published on December
2007 Club Newsletter. It confirms the problem with the canopy falling off.

DAC - September 2008 Page 6 of 16

To fix these problems, I cut a rectangular hole at the bottom of the fuselage to let the air out. I
also upgraded the landing gear with shock absorbing landing gear made by Robart and moved
them forward to push back the centre of gravity. Later on the weekend Anthony gave me
some stronger magnets and with his help I secured the magnets in place.

Next flight, no problems. The plane flew
without a glitch. I read in some forums that this
plane tend to take up the whole landing strip to
land as its a floater. I found no such problems.
Even as a novice, I was able to land the plane
without taking up much of the landing strip.

I like this plane so much that I got another
Chipmunk specifically designed for IC power
with a fibreglass fuselage. Its still work in
progress before its ready to fly. Hopefully it will
fly just as well.

DAC - September 2008 Page 7 of 16

You KNOW youre a Pattern Person if:
You and your buddies can debate for hours on whether a circle is round
During normal conversation, you hear the word box, your mind immediately flashes
to your last flight
You watch other airplanes flying, and find yourself saying things like he missed his
exit, or little tight on that radius, or wings werent level and the plane youre
watching is Jasons ARF trainer!!
Your "fun flying" consists of only some of the manoeuvres from your sequence, and
you still fly level entries and exits
Youll drive 600 miles one way, take off two vacation days, spend $200 in a motel, sit
in the sun for hours on a weekend, to fly MAYBE a total of about 50 minutes, (but only
if the weather holds out).
You have at LEAST 4 different grades of fuel, supposedly to "adjust for temperature".
More exotic, difficult to obtain, hard to use, and expensive building materials become
"essential"
There are more varieties of specialized oils for your airplanes than your autos
You have a greater variety of cleaners for your airplanes than your spouse has for the
house
You spend as much for a pair of "pattern wheels" as you spend on the "spare" for the
family auto
You buy at least ONE spare part of EVERY critical component to take to contests, fill
TWO large toolboxes, and then announce with great pride at the end of the contest "I
didn't have to get the toolbox out of the van once!!!"
You have not one, but TWO expensive transmitter cases which cost more than your
travel luggage for your trip to Europe
During the contest, you carefully stand with your back to flight line while you're
waiting, trying to convince everyone else that you really AREN'T looking at the other
fliers' flights
You tell everyone who will listen that "the scores don't matter", then you sneak up to
the scoreboard to check it out, hoping no one notices
You have at LEAST one pair of "special" sunglasses for EVERY conceivable "sky
condition". It does NOT matter if each pair must be expensive prescriptions...
Co-workers observe (during the summer) that you grow "racoon eyes"...and know
better than to ask "Why?"
Theres "special" software on your PC to let you create colour schemes
You have a special, custom ball or screwdriver for each airplane/engine combo you
own
A bad practice day is one when you bring the wrong custom screwdriver
A REALLY bad practice day is the one when you brought the wrong transmitter (or left
it home altogether)
At least once, every winter, you try to find a "pattern plane" for your simulator
"Wings level" is no longer a Goal, but a Lifestyle
Are you a Pattern Person? Are you a Pattern Person? Are you a Pattern Person? Are you a Pattern Person?

DAC - September 2008 Page 8 of 16
You have more extra props in your van for more kinds of engines/
conditions than the rest of the members of your club - combined.
You won't fly your plane if there are more than 1 or 2 sport flyers in the
air.
Your planes live in the car all summer, and only come in the house for
repair
You never see your neighbours during the entire period of Daylight Savings
Time because your daily routine is "wake up- work - fly- home after dark -
sleep
You have the ability to preach for endless hours on the relative merits of a particular
engine type, brand, or model like a zealot who has just witnessed the second coming.
You exit the bathroom and mentally give yourself a "10".
You have more than a dozen "F" plugs in your toolbox.
You send your micro digital scale out for recalibration every year.
Youre willing to CD so you can see the scores before everyone else.

If you are interested in getting your Helicopter Bronze
Wings, DAC has tentative booking for the 13
th
Sept at
1pm. Contact Michael Best to arrange a time slot and
be kept in formed of any changes to the time.

As part of knowing your helicopter you will need to
demonstrate the theoretical knowledge (which will
include knowing how to use a pitch gauge), do a pre-
flight check, and radio range check.

Below illustrations show what manoeuvres are
required to demonstrate your proficiency in flying a RC
helicopter. Refer to MAAA, Manual of Procedures,
MAAA020 (9 May 2009) for full details.

2) Lift off to eye-level height,
hover for ten seconds and land.

3) Lift off to skid eye-level height,
brief hover followed by a straight
outward flight of ten metres into
wind, brief hover then return tail
first in straight flight and land.

4) Lift off to skid eye-level height
and fly sideways (right or left) for
ten metres, then sideways in the
opposite direction for twenty metres
then return to start point and land.
5) Lift off, briefly hover then fly a
horizontal figure eight with nose
into wind throughout the flight
and land.

6) [Re-worded] Lift off to skid eye-
level height and fly a 360-degree
with nose into wind throughout the
flight and land.
7) Execute a 45-degree landing
pattern from ten metres height and
ten metres out.
