You are on page 1of 6

You have selected activities for primary aged pupils.

Below you will find quick

activities to accompany our in depth lesson plan to support the theme of Lets
Create a Better Internet Together.

1. The things we love about the internet
Ask your pupils to create posters, video clips, songs, drama sketches or short 1
minute films that detail their favourite sites, services, technologies and games
online. These could then be hosted on the schools website or MLE. (Bear in mind
that a conversation regarding the importance of age limits may be required if you
have pupils who are using social networking services. Reinforce why it is that age
limits are set and praise those pupils who are using the correct services for their
age). As a class you could compile a list of your favourite top 10 online activities, and
see how this compares to other classes or year groups.

2. My perfect online world
Discuss with your pupils what they think their perfect online world would look like.
What types of sites and services would they want to use?
Encourage your pupils to think broadly and creatively about what they would include
(i.e. not just games, but what they might also use to find out information, to learn,
and to communicate and share content), and also how people would be expected to
behave in this world, and what tools might be available to help them.
Pupils can then work in groups or independently to fill the My Perfect Online World
worksheet (Appendix 1). They could also include ideas for sites and services that
havent been invented yet that might meet a need they have!

Allow pupils to feedback their ideas to the class.

3. Three stars and a wish
Ask pupils what they are doing to make the internet a better place. They may be
creating their own content and uploading it (such as videos, animations, games,
apps, etc.) but they can also consider their conduct online and how their behaviour
can help shape a better internet (using their manners, showing respect when
chatting to others online, reporting comments/content that is
upsetting/inappropriate.)
On the Three Stars and a Wish sheet (Appendix 2), pupils can fill in three things
they are already doing to make a better internet (on the stars), and one new thing
they plan to do (on the cloud).

Give pupils a chance to share and compare their stars and wishes. Which
ideas/themes do the class think are most important?

4. Let me Tell Your Fortune!
Set your pupils the challenge of making their own paper fortune teller, adapting it
with their own positive safety messages and then seeing how many people they can
share their messages with!

Print out enough of the attached fortune tellers in Appendix 3 for your class.
Staying with the theme of this years Safer Internet Day, ask your pupils to fill
in the blank section with their very own internet safety message, making sure
that it reflects Lets create a better internet together. (these sections are
marked with....)
Follow the instructions in Appendix 3 on how to fold your fortune teller and
demonstrate this with your pupils.
Explain the rules of the game.
o Step 1 Get your friends to choose a number from the outside of your teller.
o Step 2 Open your teller in opposite ways so that it matches the number that
your friend chooses.
o Step 3 Ask your friend to choose another number, this time from the inside.
o Step 4 Repeat step 2 using the new number.
o Step 5 Ask your friend to choose another number from the inside.
o Step 6 Open that number flap to reveal their safety message!
Set the challenge of trying the teller on as many people as possible. Try it on
parents, teachers, friends in the playground, lunchtime supervisor,
grandparents....anyone you already know and trust!
