1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation (VIDC), an independent corporation under the Government
of Maharashtra, is currently executing Gosikhurd Irrigation Project, in the Bhandara district of
Maharashtra, for irrigating the land in Nagpur, Chandrapur and Bhandara districts. This project consists
of construction of 10.45 KM long earth dam with 774 meter long spillway across Wainganga river, Left
and right bank main canals and distribution system and four offshore Lift Irrigation Schemes so as to
create irrigation potential of 2.50,800 ha.
Water Planning of the Project is done considering 75% dependable, yield (Table 4.2). Under this Project
DAM is under construction across Wainganga River. In Maharashtra State, in the region up stream of
Gosikhurd Project some irrigation projects are under construction and some are planned for construction.
For these projects 4,688 Mm3 quantities has been earmarked, At Gosikhurd Dam Site 3,407 Mm3 yield is
available Out of this, Utilization planned for Gosikhurd Project is 1,634 Mm3. Balance yield of 1,773
M3. will spillover, this spillover is proposed to be utilized for power generation (Table 1 & 2). The full
irrigation development is expected over a span of 10 years. During this period, unutilized storage can be
used for power generation. The present Hydel Power scheme is incidental to the cause of Irrigation
project and cost of dam / reservoir is therefore not to be charged to the Hydel power scheme. The power
generated by the proposed Gosi Khurd hydel scheme is to be utilized for four lift irrigation pumping
stations planned by VIDC under the Irrigation Project.
Estimated generation capacity of the power plant is 24 MW. It is proposed to wheel the power through the
132 kV Grid of MSEB upto the pumping stations. The surplus energy will be sold to MSEB. The hydel
scheme has therefore, been considered as a captive power generation.
Salient Features (General): -
The average head available at the turbine inlet is about 19 m and flow of 240 cumecs. With these
conditions the specific speed lies in the region of Kaplan turbine regime. Four units of 6 MW Kaplan
Turbines with Generators will be installed in the Power House. Each unit will have a water conductor
system of 4.5m. diameter penstock emanating from the Power dam and water after passing through the
turbines will be trailed through the draft tubes to the tail race channel.
The maximum annual energy generated will be 85 MU (million units) in the first year gradually reducing
to 60 MU over the period of 10 years (Reference to Table 4B to 13B). The power evacuation will be done
through the 11 kV /132 kV step up transformers situated in the out door switch yard and connected to 132
kV Sub station located at Paghora Pumping Station.
The energy consumption of the four-lift irrigation pumping station will be about 41 MU and
the surplus energy will be sold to MSEB.
