Introduction
Concrete is reinforce" to impro&e its low tensile strength an" "uctility( it is "one in
or"er to resist unaccepta)le crac*ing an"+or structural failure )y means of tensile
stresses. ,any components of concrete structures are reinforce"- inclu"ing )eams-
sla)s- columns- an" foun"ations. !teel is the most common material use" for
reinforcing )ars "ue to its high tensile strength an" material properties- howe&er in
thir" worl" an" "e&eloping countries steel is "ifficult to come across as it is e.pensi&e
to procure. /ther metho"s of reinforcement can )e e.plore" such as plastics or
tim)ers- one apparent replacement is )am)oo.
Bam)oo has )een use" in mo"ern construction for years- howe&er often only use" for
temporary uses such as scaffol"ing- as )am)oo is a natural fi)re an" is relati&ely
suscepti)le to "eterioration. 0ew research suggests that if )am)oo is chemically-
physically an"+or thermally treate"- it can suita)ly replace tim)er- steel- an" other
materials in a more permanent setting such as )ri"ges an" housing. #n"ustrially treate"
)am)oo has shown suita)ility for use within a composite an" has alrea"y )een
successfully utili1e" for structural an" non-structural applications in construction
2Johnson- !. 20103.
Bam)oo4s natural "istri)ution ranges through !outh East 5sia an" #n"ia- Central
5frica an" !outh 5merica- these are all regions which woul" )enefit greatly )y the
re"uce" costing of reinforcement. Bam)oo can )e grown in almost any soil an" can )e
full si1e within 12 months pro&i"e" it is fe" well with mulch an" fertili1er 26oach- ,.
17783. The root systems of )am)oo range from only '0-90cm in "epth- therefore
ha&ing minimal long term impact on its surroun"ing en&ironment
2Bam)oolan".com.au- 2013. 5long with its e.tensi&e accessi)ility- )am)oo has )een
teste" to ha&e an ultimate tensile strength of appro.imately '90,:a- which ri&als
steels 00,:a 26ott*e- E. 20023.
Scope
The o);ecti&e of this thesis will )e to test the effect of )am)oo as replacement for
steel as the reinforcement in structural concrete. This will )e "one )y analysing an"
comparing the characteristics of )am)oo against steel through the fa)rication an"
testing of )oth steel an" )am)oo reinforce" concrete )eams. This analysis will consist
of mechanical tests along with a literature re&iew of pre&ious stu"ies- an" the results
of the thesis will help "etermine the &ia)ility of )am)oo as a non-steel reinforcement
within concrete.

Methodology
1. :ro"uce Thesis :lan
2. <iterary re&iew = gather an" critically analyse pre&ious research on relate"
topics
'. #nitial e.periments on steel an" )am)oo sections to compare raw material
properties
. $raw conclusions a)out material properties from initial e.periments
9. $etermine which tests will )e rele&ant an" effecti&e in the comparati&e stu"y
8. :lan- pro"uce- an" test concrete )eam samples with )am)oo reinforcement
an" steel reinforcement
>. /)ser&e an" e&aluate results with pre&ious research in literary re&iew
?. Conclu"e fin"ings an" state suita)ility of )am)oo reinforce" concrete in
construction
