City lawyer Kevin Westell argued before
Judge Dennis Schmidt that the court didnt
have the power to grant an interim release
of the dogs before a scheduled hearing on
April 10 at Richmond provincial court.
Fearing for the welfare of their pets, after
learning they hadnt been walked in months
and had ballooned in weight, owner Nav
Nijjer and his mother Prabjot Nijjer sought
to have the court intervene and release the
dogs prior to the court hearing.
But it wasnt all bad news for the Nijjer
family, who have seen a significant improve-
ment in the health of their pets, Axel and
Paris.
They appear to have lost between 10 and
15 pounds each in the past couple of weeks,
are being walked daily, and are out in the yard
for a fewhours each day, according to lawyer
Joe Peschisolido, whose frm has been hired f
by the family after the City of Richmond ap-
plied to have the dogs destroyed.
The Richmond Review revealed two weeks
ago that volunteers andstafat the Richmond f
Animal Protection Society were barred from
walking the seized dogs, which have been
labelled as dangerous by the city. A society
policy had prohibited anyone from walking
dangerous dogs, which under normal circum-
stances would have been seized for a maxi-
mum of 21 days.
Since they were seized on Oct. 25, following
a minor biting incident involving a construc-
tion worker who sufered a dime-sized contu- ff
sion to his upper thigh, the dogs have gained
an estimated 25 pounds each.

Good bye to our dear Dad,
loving husband, brother, uncle,
grandfather, teacher and mentor.
Tony was born in Singapore.
As a young man, he lived in
England and on several tea
plantations in Asia with his
parents, Henry Walter and Viola
Clarice, and brothers Derek, Colin
and Geoffrey. His life changed forever when he lied about his
age and enlisted with the Royal Air Force. Captured and taken
prisoner by the Japanese in WW II, he survived the toughest test
of any mans life over a period of 42 months, fnally liberated at
wars end weighing 65 pounds. He moved post-war to Canada
where he was lucky to meet Norma Burrows, sharing 61 years
of marriage. Together they raised 4 boys - Chris (Karen, son
David), Geoff (Lisa, daughters Melissa and Emily), Dave (Debra)
and Mike (Karen, daughter Krysta, son Brandon). All looked
up to Gramps. After a brief career in the military at Jericho, he
became an elementary school teacher and librarian in Richmond
at Gilmore, Daniel Woodward, Bridgeport and A.B. Dixon schools,
until his retirement. Throughout his life he had special passions
for beekeeping, gliding, sailing, travelling, wood crafting,
mentoring children, the paranormal, U.F.O.s, and alternative
medicine. As a POW survivor, Tony took a great interest in how
the war was portrayed, especially after a 1986 visit to the Imperial
War Museum in London. The focus there was on the European
theatre of the war, with little mention of the Far East. He vowed
to share his experiences, and wrote a book titled My Life with
the Samurai, about surviving the death camps against diffcult
odds. In retirement he would gather up some books, and Norma,
and head off to a book sale or craft fair to share his story and
sell some books. He battled cancer late in life, and dropped to
100 pounds, hurting. Tony fought to the end, a tough, resilient man
with an incredible pain threshold, never complaining. We take
comfort knowing he is at peace again now, his 90 years well lived.
He leaves us with memories of the many hats he wore: husband,
father, educator, mentor, friend, cheerleader, guidance counsellor,
storyteller. And so importantly, he leaves us remembering our
love, respect and admiration for him. Thanks to the medical and
care staff at Fraserview Intermediate Care Lodge, Richmond.
As Pops would sign his book: May your rice bowl always be full.
A celebration of Tonys Life will be held on Saturday, August 16th,
