Section 07210: Building Insulation Foamed!in!"lace Insulation#
"art 1General Description of Work: A. Applications for foam insulation specified in this section include: 1. Foam-in-place insulation for improving thermal and acoustical insulative properties in: a. Stud Cavity Walls . Sloped Ceilings c. Concrete !asonry "nits #C!"$ Walls %uality Assurance: A. Foam insulation is to e installed y or under the supervision of an &nsulSmart &nterior Foam &nsulation-trained installer. '. (roducts are supplied y manufacturer as concentrates and are to e lended y installer to insure product reactivity and consistency. C. Stud =all cavities in retrofit or ne= construction can e filled =ith foam after gypsum =alloard is installed using either of three #-$ methods: 1. 0op-Fill !ethod: 0he installer inserts an e)tended =hip hose through a 6-inch minimum diameter hole drilled in the top plate+ e)tending the hose to egin installing foam from the ottom of the cavity+ gradually =ithdra=ing the hose as the foam fills the cavity. 6. Side-Fill !ethod: Drill 5>3-inch to 2>3-inch holes in each stud cavity #ottom+ middle and top$ efore inCecting foam into the cavity through the hole in 8-foot lifts until it completely fills each cavity as evidenced y foam e)iting a small vent hole at the top. -. Side-Fill !ethod #Alternate$: Drill a 6-inch minimum diameter hole in the center of the stud cavity+ insert a =hip hose and fill the lo=er half of the cavity efore repositioning the =hip hose to similarly fill the upper portion of the cavity. &nstallation can e performed either from the e)terior or interior of the =all section. &n either case+ seal each hole =ith a snug fitting polystyrene foam plug prior to patching and sealing the hole. 0he closed-cell polystyrene foam plug is recommended in order to maintain the integrity of the vapor retarder portion of the =all assemly. D. Stud =all cavities in ne= construction can e filled =ith foam efore gypsum =alloard is installed. 1. Faric Supported !ethod: 7ither non-=oven construction faric or 8 mil polyethylene is stretched tightly and stapled to the framing faces to contain and support the foam during application. 0he authoriBed installer then slits a 1< hole through the faric and inCects the foam to fill the cavity through the hole and fills in 8-foot lifts. 6. *pen-!esh !ethod: *pen-mesh #1>8< ma).$ is stretched tightly and stapled to the framing faces to contain and support the foam during application. 0he authoriBed installer inCects the foam to fill the cavity through the open mesh. 7)cess foam e)iting through the mesh is easily s=ept from the insulated surfaces =ith a room for disposal. 'enefits: a. 7nales visual confirmation of foam placement during application. . 0he foam is iodegradaleD thus+ may e disposed on-site y mi)ing =ith soil used as a turf sustrate or landscaping. c. Facilitates curing efore installing gypsum =alloard. 1ote: A small amount of shrinkage+ typically ,.5E+ may occur as the foam dries and cures+ resulting in small gaps et=een the foam and the framing memers. 7. C!" #Concrete !asonry "nit$ cores can e filled =ith foam using either top- fill or+ more commonly+ pressure-inCection techniFues. 1. For top-fill+ the installer must use an e)tension tue to egin installing foam from the ottom of the cavity+ =ithdra=ing the e)tension tue as foam fills the cavity. 6. For pressure-inCection+ holes are drilled in each C!" at an appro)imate height of 8G from finished floor level. a. ->3< holes for visually sensitive areas for use =ith a lo=-volume touch-up gun . 5>3< holes for use =ith a standard foam gun c. 2>3< holes for use =ith a high-volume production gun. 1ormally each vertical core is drilled and inCected =ith foam in 1,G-68G lifts+ although in 3< C!"+ alternating cores can e used in =alls less than 16G high. -. &nsulSmart &nterior Foam &nsulation is inCected until it completely fills each vertical core of lock cells+ evidenced y foam e)iting the adCacent inCection hole and an occasional test hole drilled at the top of the =all section. &f needed+ drill holes and fill =ith foam at an appro)imate height of 1,G-18G aove the initial ro= of inCection holes until the =all is completely filled. 8. (atch holes =ith mortar to resemle e)isting surface. F. (roduct should e protected from e)cess moisture during initial 68 hour curing period after installation. A 26-hour curing period is recommended prior to paintingD ho=ever+ in each case the coating contractor should test the =alls to confirm the gypsum =alloardGs surface is suitale for painting efore eginning paint application. :. All foamed areas need fresh air ventilation until foam has fully cured and dried. H. Foam should not e e)posed to surfaces over 1.,IF for an e)tended period of time. &() *F S&+,I*( 07210
