2 Increase in Crime
Instances where there are increases of crime due to the increasing of tourist numbers
include the following:
(i) Tourists as Victims of Thefts and Robbery
Desite friendly warning from hotel staff! ta"i dri#ers! and locals! the tourists are less
li$ely to obser#e the normal safety recautions they would do at home. %o #aluables are
left in clear #iew in loc$ed or unloc$ed motor #ehicles or unattended on a beach. In
addition! hotel rooms or aartment are not roerly secured! and cameras! money! &ewelry
are left lying around.
(ii) 'ot %ots (ocation
)oreign tourists use to fre*uenting laces such as bars! nightclubs and stri &oints catering
to tourists and ro#iding ancillary ser#ices such as rostitution and drugs. These laces
are rone to criminal acti#ities.
2.2.+ ,ossible %olutions - Round the Cloc$ ,atrol by Tourist ,olicemen
%trengthening tourist olice and the lainclothes secial stri$e force ersonnel on round-
the-cloc$ atrol may hel reduce etty crimes li$e ic$ oc$eting. In .uching! %arawa$!
there are now more than /0 tourist olicemen and 20 secial stri$e force ersonnel on
regular atrols along the waterfront and nearby areas fre*uented by tourists.
2.2.2 %afety and %ecurity at Tourist 1reas
,atrolling of tourist areas by 2alaysian 3a#y esecially those around oular islands will
reduce the instances of iracy! thus! con#incing the tourists that they are in secured area..
2. ,roblems Tourists )aced 1rri#ing in 2alaysia
There se#eral roblems tourists may faced when arri#ing in 2alaysia.
2.+ Inade*uate Infrastructural )acilities.
%ome states ha#e e"eriencing inade*uate infrastructural facilities and related ser#ices
articularly in relation to accommodation and transortation. The immediate roblem in
se#eral regions in 2alaysia! for e"amle! is the shortage of resort-tye hotels. The
deficiency also e"tends to suitable accommodation facilities for budget class tourists.
This is more aarent that some islands with tourist otential off mainland 4orneo ha#e
not been ro#ided with accommodation facilities.
In relation to transortation! ublic transorts are too fre*uently not a#ailable to tourist
destinations away from the main city or towns. Tourists ha#e to hire ta"is which are
e"ensi#e to reach their destinations.
2.+.+ ,ossible %olutions - In#estment Incenti#e and 1llocation for De#eloment
The go#ernment! through the rele#ant authorities! is urged to offer financial and enhanced
in#estment incenti#e for in#estment in tourism related infrastructural facilities. 1 more
direct role is to increase the allocation for de#eloment of infrastructure in otential but
unde#eloed tourist site. ,ublic transort shall also be made a#ailable to remote tourist
destinations.
