1. INTRODUCTION

Community Flowers
Recycling shipping containers is a fast and cost effective way to provide
support for communities made homeless by the Sichuan earthquake.
The shipping containers are intended as a short to medium term solution,
until such time as the Government completes the vast rebuilding of the
Provinces infrastructure, including schools and hospitals, which will take
several years.
Community Flowers pursues a simple strategy; to take the widely available
shipping container, line the interior walls to keep the interior cool in summer
and warm in winter, insert windows for natural light and ventilation, and plan
the interior with furniture and fttings that are ft for its intended purpose. The
modular shipping container can be transported by truck to its destination,
placed on the ground by a crane, plugged into a power supply and operational
immediately.
In section 2, a range of community support facilities are illustrated,
comprising of a Medical Box, a Library Box and a Counseling Box. The
containers are arranged on site like the petals on a fower, outward looking,
opening up sheltered spaces for people to gather, rest and recover. The
number of containers forming a cluster will respond to the specifc needs of
each location.
