Excess pressure valves for
steam and water mains distribution
Spirax Sarco DEP excess pressure valves are
specifically designed to provide upstream primary
pressure control within steam and water distribution
systems operating at pressures up to 25 bar g and
temperatures up to 300C.
Being self-powered and direct acting DEP valves
provide the benefit of low maintenance trouble free
operation.
Most applications are catered for by a comprehensive
range that includes sizes DN15 to DN100, with
set pressure ranges up to 16 bar g and body materials
that include SG iron and cast steel.
Performance of the range is enhanced by utilising
the superior fully balanced design principle in sizes
DN25 to DN100 providing the benefit of stability
of control over full valve lift.
EPDM fabric reinforced actuator diaphragm provides
reliable but responsive operation. To protect the
diaphragm from high temperature damage a
WS4 water seal pot is available for connection
to the primary pressure signal line.
A version is also available with Nitrile fabric
reinforced rubber diaphragm for oil type applications.
Interchangeable colour coded control springs.
Fabric reinforced EPDM or Nitrile diaphragms.
Spring plate with needle bearing for
easy adjustment.
Bellow sealed stem for trouble free low
maintenance operation.

Valve options
Simple spanner adjustment of set value.
Balancing bellow provides increased differential
pressures and stability of control.
Flow from under the seat for improved control and
operating performance.
The DEP valve provides upstream pressure control,
excess pressure relief and steam surplussing
functions.
The valve is installed in the pipework with the flow
acting below the plug and upstream pressure being
transmitted to the actuator.
Control spring tension applies a closing force
preventing the valve plug opening.
Simple adjustment of the control spring tension
increases or decreases the set pressure at which the
valve will commence opening.
Upstream pressure is transmitted to the actuator
diaphragm applying an opposing force.
With upstream pressure below set value the valve
plug remains closed.
When upstream pressure reaches the set value the
actuator opposing force overcomes the spring tension
allowing the valve to commence opening.
Differential pressures acting across the valve plug
are eliminated by the inclusion of plug or balancing
bellow providing stability of control across the
full operating range of the valve.

Non-critical
steam supply
Compact steam generators provide an efficient solution for fixed or stand alone portable steam supply
requirements providing a compact, energy saving, low cost solution with the advantage of minimal operator
attendance.
Continued supply of steam at desired pressure is an important factor. The DEP direct acting excess pressure
valve provides the ideal self-powered, fit and forget solution with the advantage of simple adjustment of set value.
In many steam plants there are times when the boiler cannot cope with short-term peak demands. When this
occurs it is often desirable to ration steam supplies so that essential plant is kept operating as normal, but
non-essential plant is temporarily shut-down.
To achieve this, a surplussing valve should be fitted. The DEP provides this surplussing function.
Plant connected to the downstream side of the DEP valve will only receive steam if the upstream steam pressure
exceeds the setting of the control spring.
5
Typical water applications
Pumped pressure overspill
Spray pressure control
Spray manifold
Cooling water storage
Large pumped cooling water systems normally operate under conditions of variable demand resulting in inefficient
pump operation.
To maintain a constant pumping head the DEP valve provides a simple solution providing pump excess pressure
overspill back to the storage tank.
Many process applications involve spraying liquids where for optimum spray performance a constant delivery
pressure must be maintained.
Installing a DEP valve on the pumped return line provides a simple solution providing pressure control maintaining
desired spray performance.

Typical specification
Excess pressure control shall be achieved using direct acting valves with stainless steel bellow stem seals and
fully balanced trims. Trim balancing shall be by stainless bellows on valves DN25 to DN100 and by plug
balancing in smaller sizes.
All valves shall be controlled by high quality chrome vanadium springs and fabric reinforced diaphragms.
Valve bodies shall be SG iron PN25 or cast steel PN40 depending on the maximum operating pressure.
