BOARD CUTTING
Suitable cutting m ethods include the use of:
(a)Score and Snapknife (b) H and guillotine (c) H andsaw
(a) Score and Snap knife
*
Score and snapcutting is a fast and efficient m ethod,
using a tungsten-tipped score and snapknife.
Steps:
Preferably score from the face side of the board.
Score against straight edge & repeat action to obtain
sufficient depth for clean break (norm ally 1/3 of board
thickness).
Snap upw ards to achieve break.
C lean edges w ith a rasp if necessary.
b) Hand Guillotine
*
B oard can be cut w ith a hand
guillotine to produce clean
straight edges.
Steps:
M ark line for cutting.
Align the guillotine blade along the cut-off side of the line
to allow for the thickness of the blade
b) Handsaw
A hand saw can also be used for
general cutting operations such
as for sm all cuts and notching.
For notching, use a handsaw first and then score along
back w ith a score and snapknife (as illustrated) and snap
upw ards. C lean rough edges w ith a rasp.
HOLE-FORMING
(a)For small rectangular and circular holes
Steps:
D rill a series of holes around the perim eter of the hole
opening required.
Then tap out the w aste piece from the board face.
Tap gently to avoid dam age to board.
Ensure that board edges are properly and evenly
supported.
(b)For large rectangular openings for wall ventilators.
Steps:
Start w ith scoring around the perim eter of the opening to
sufficient depth w ith score and snapknife.
Form a large round hole at the centre of the perim eter by
drilling as show n above.
Then saw -cut from the centre tow ards the corners of the
rectangular opening.
Tap gently to rem ove w aste pieces from face side.
C lean rough edges and radius corners w ith a suitable
rasp.
WORKING WITH POWER TOOLS
U AC Fibre C em ent boards can be readily cut on site w ith pow er tools. For board cutting, pow er circular saw w ith diam ond tipped
blade can be used. For hole-form ing, pow er drill fitted w ith hole-cutter or jig saw w ith tungsten blade is suitable. All pow er cutting
operations should be carried out in a w ell ventilated environm ent and w ith good w ork safety practices. O ther preferred board cutting

FRAMING
Framing Materials:
Tim ber or steel fram ing m ay be used.
K iln-dried tim ber should be chosen to m inim ise shrinkage.
C old form ed light gauge steel section, preferably less than
1.2m m thick is recom m ended.
Special Framing Design Considerations:
B oards should not be fixed to the underside of m etal roof
purlins or steel trusses directly. Preferably a suspended grid
fram e should be used.
B oards should not be used as ceiling under a non-insulated
m etal roof. G enerally, the m inim um acceptable insulation
requirem ent should be 50m m of m ineral w ool blanket below
a layer of reflective foil.
B oards should not be fixed directly to the underside of
tim ber roof trusses or rafters. Preferably a tim ber batten
fram e should be used.
Framing Requirements and Recommendations:
For large areas, ceiling should be divided into bays not
exceeding 10m x 7.5m ( figure 23 ).
Figure 23: Maximum Bay Size
Each bay should be able to m ove independent of adjacent
bays and the surrounding building structures.
To m ake allow ance for this m ovem ent, an expansion joint
should be form ed at the perim eter of each bay.
Fram ing structures (to w hich boards are fixed) m ust not
continue across this expansion joint.
Fram ing structure spacing for boards should not exceed
610m m centres.
