Foreword

AMSA Philippines is a non-stock, non-profit, non-governmental advocacy
organization of various medical student associations all over the Philippines. In
order to improve on our advocacies, it is important to look back on and learn from
the past. Moreover, the AMSA Philippines Executive Board would like to promote
transparency within the organization and encourage the active participation of
members in the organization.

This Accomplishment Report is but a summary of our endeavors this term. For
further reading, specific links to posts in our website (http://www.amsaphil.org) are
provided. We hope that you will take the time to read more on the entry that you
find interesting.

Furthermore, we encourage you, dear members, to subscribe to our official
channels for timely updates. Aside from the website, AMSA Philippines has a

April 2014: Transition Period

AMSA Philippines General Assembly
AMSA Philippines held its General Assembly on 04 April. The Executive Board
presented its accomplishments to the Council of LMOs. Amendments to the AMSA
Philippines 2011 Constitution were also approved by the Council. Lastly, the
candidates for the incoming Executive Board presented their plans before the
Council.

National Medical Students Conference Building the Nation
with Leadership, Innovation and Medicine was hosted by ACSIS (ASMPH) on 05-06

AMSA Philippines Research Competition
The 4
th
AMSA Philippines Research Competition was concluded on the last day of
the NMSC. For the paper category, the winning research was Acute Toxicity and
Anti-diarrheal Effect of crude Corchorus olitorius methanolic extract on castor-oil
induced diarrhea in BALB/C mice by Alonsagay DA et al. (ComDRS PLM). For the
poster category, the winning research was Compassion Fatigue among Resident
Physicians at West Visayas State University-Medical Center by Avena J et al.
(AMSA WVSU). [Read more]

Gawad AMSA Project Competition
The winner of the 2
nd
Gawad AMSA Project Competition, as announced on the last
of the NMSC, was ACSIS (ASMPH) for their project Ignatian Build, followed by the
runner-up, MSSR-IPPNW Philippines (UP), for their Arroceros Project. [Read

ELECTION AMSA Philippines Executive Board 2014-2015
AMSA Philippines Council of LMOs elected the incoming Executive Board on 05
April, with the results announced before the end of the NMSC. See View the roster

INFOGRAPHIC World Health Day
AMSA Philippines SCOPH released an infographic on 07 April in celebration of World
Health Day 2014 Small Bite: Big Threat. [Read more]

Open Letter to Philip Morris International
In a letter dated 18 April, AMSA Philippines joined HealthJustice Philippines and
other civil society organizations in campaigning against Philip Morris International's
Be Marlboro ad for using themes and images that appeal to youth across the
globe. More information on the campaign can be found here. [Read more]

EXECUTIVE BOARD Team Building and Year Planning
Last 21 April, the AMSA Philippines Executive Board conducted its team-building
and planning session at Fortune Park Resort, Antipolo, Rizal. The Presidents of
AMSA UERM and AMSA UST also joined the EB.

Yolanda Immersion
Twelve members of AMSA Philippines spent a part of their summer immersing in
four Yolanda-hit municipalities of Samar on 25 April to 03 May. They turned over
AMSA Philippines donation to UPM-SHS, through DJDSR, and to the municipalities
through their municipal health officers. This immersion was made possible with the
cooperation of the Doctors to the Barrios.

AMSEP Malaysia for the Philippines 2014
Ten delegates joined AMSEP Malaysia for the Philippines 2014, hosted by Universiti
Putra Malaysia last 26 April to 02 May. Read the full delegation report here.

AMSEP Taiwan for the Philippines 2014
Fourteen delegates joined AMSEP Taiwan for the Philippines 2014, hosted by Tzu

Asian Medical Students Conference
On 27 April, the outgoing Regional Chairperson announced the delegates accepted
to represent AMSA Philippines in AMSC 2014 Thailand. However, on 31 May, AMSA
International announced the cancellation of the event in light of the coup detat.

EXECUTIVE BOARD Official Start of Term
The term of the Executive Board 2014-2015 officially started on 01 May, as stated
in Article IX, Section 3 of the AMSA Philippines 2011 Constitution.

AMSA Philippines SCOPH and ACSIS (ASMPH) released infographics on 07 May in
celebration of World Asthma Day. [Read more]

for Human Rights and Peace, National Exchange Officer
In an online meeting, the AMSA Philippines Council of LMOs elected the unfilled
positions in the Executive Board on 08 May. [Read more]

LAUNCH AMSAYA Shirt Project
The AMSAYA Shirt Project, launched on 10 May, is a fund-raising initiative for the
standing committees of AMSA Philippines and outgoing delegates to AMSA, IFMSA,

INFOGRAPHIC #BringBackOurGirls
AMSA Philippines joins the online campaign #BringBackOurGirls, calling for the
release of the 276 girls abducted by Boko Haram in Nigeria. An infographic was
released by AMSA Philippines SCORP on 11 May. [Read more]

AMSEP Japan for the Philippines 2014
Ten delegates joined AMSEP Japan for the Philippines 2014, hosted by Kagoshima

On 18 May, AMSA Philippines SCORA released an infographic on HIV/AIDS and
invited everyone to join the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial organized in
UP Diliman by The Red Ribbon Project. [Read more]

STATEMENT Graphic Health Warnings for Tobacco Products
AMSA Philippines released its stand on the issue of graphic health warnings for
tobacco products on 09 June. The statement was written by the National Officer for

Tobacco Products
The External Vice-President aired AMSA Philippines position in a press conference
organized by Change.Org on 09 June, upon invitation of HealthJustice Philippines.

Integrity and Accountability Walk with Fr. Robert Reyes
In line with the campaign for graphic health warnings on tobacco products, AMSA
Philippines joined the Integrity and Accountability Walk with Fr. Robert Reyes on 10
June, with the Internal Vice-President as representative. [Read more]

Oplan_PH: PhilHealth Awareness Campaign
USLS CoMedSC launched Oplan_PH: PhilHealth Awareness Campaign on 10 June. It
was organized under the advocacy of AMSA Philippines SCOPH in supporting the
governments health insurance program. [Read more]

ELECTION Council Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Publicity Officer
Pursuant to the constitutional amendments adopted on 04 April, the Council of
LMOs elected its first Speaker and Deputy Speaker. The President also appointed
AMSA Philippines first Publicity Officer. These were announced to AMSA Philippines

AMSA Philippines SCOPH and AMSA FEU-NRMF released an infographic on 14 June
in celebration of World Blood Donor Day. [Read more]

Round of SCOPE Applications
AMSA Philippines announced the results of the first round of outgoing professional
exchanges via IFMSA SCOPE on 19 June. [Read more]

On 19 June, AMSA Philippines launched AMSHOP: Advocacy-Oriented Merchandise

POLICY STATEMENT Internally Displaced Persons
AMSA Philippines adopted a Policy Statement on Internally Displaced Persons on 20
June in celebration of World Refugee Day. The statement was proposed by the

Hustle to Serve: Marketing Basics for Social Advocates
Sixty-eight social advocates from different universities attended Hustle to Serve:
Marketing Basics for Social Advocates, the first marketing seminar of AMSA
Philippines held last 21 June at Tan Yan Kee Auditorium, University of Santo Tomas.

AMSA Philippines SCORP and ComDRS (PLM) released an advocacy poster on 26
June in celebration of UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. [Read

July 2014

Initial Meeting of the Coalition for Primary Care
AMSA Philippines, represented by the External Vice-President, joined 44 other
organizations in the initial meeting of the Coalition for Primary Care on 08 July, at
Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement, Quezon City. [Read more]

World Population Day 2014
AMSA Philippines was invited by the Population Commission and UNFPA Philippines
to be part of the World Population Day celebration "Investing in Young People" on
11 July at SM Megamall. The External Vice-President officially represented the
association. [Read more]

The Act of Killing
Eleven members of AMSA Philippines gathered together at Dormus, Espaa Blvd.,
Manila, on 12 July for the screening of The Act of Killing. AMSA Philippines SCORP
was given license for free screening by the International Rehabilitation Council for
Torture Victims and the director of the film, Joshua Oppenheimer, through
FilmPlatform.net. [Read more]

AMSA International Executive Committee Meeting
The Regional Chairperson officially represented AMSA Philippines in AMSA
Internationals Executive Committee Meeting on 12-13 July in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Regional Chairpersons voted for amendments to the AMSA International
Constitution, awardees of lifetime membership, and awardees for Best Chapter.
They also elected the incoming AMSA International Executive Committee.

Round of SCOPE Applications
AMSA Philippines announced the results of the second round of outgoing
professional exchanges via IFMSA SCOPE on 20 July. [Read more]

Signing of R.A. 10643 into Law
On 21 July, the Department of Health announced in its blog the signing of R.A.
10643 "An Act to Effectively Instill Health Consciousness through Graphic Health
Warnings on Tobacco Products" into law. AMSA Philippines was united with
HealthJustice Philippines and other civil society organizations in pushing for this

STATEMENT MH17
AMSA Philippines released a Statement on MH17 on 22 July in light of the tragedy
claiming hundreds of lives, including those of HIV scientists. The statement was
proposed by the National Officer for Reproductive Health including HIV/AIDS and
the National Officer for Human Rights and Peace. Read the full statement here.

On 23 July, AMSA Philippines SCORP encouraged the online community to change
profile and cover photos in solidarity with all the innocent victims of oppression and
military occupation in Gaza. [Read more]

Forum on State of the Nations Health: Healthcare Workforce Crisis
AMSA Philippines was present in the formal media launch of the Coalition for
Primary Care on 22 July at Annabel's Restaurant, Quezon City, organized in
cooperation with the Philippine College of Physicians (PCP). [Read more]

PhilSHIFT in amsaphil.org
PhilSHIFT Research Group, a group investigating the Filipino chronotype, requested
AMSA Philippines assistance in promoting their project. On 24 July, a page in
