Match Report;
Hunters stay alive in impressive win over Brisbane ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brisbane,QLD- The Newcastle Hunters won their fourth straight game and it has to be said it was by far and way their best performance of the season as the ran over Brisbane 31-13.
The Hunters confused and confounded Brisbane who were not prepared to stay in the arm wrestle and in the end Robert Vaivai threw three interceptions and left the game early with an arm injury. "I warned before the game not to get frustrated. Yet we fell into that trap. We were terrible and perhaps we need the break next week for the bye" said Head Coach Craig Barry.
Brisbane began well enough. A long opening drive was dominated by runs and it saw them take the lead with Cade Joass kicking a 43 yard field goal. But Newcastle struck back in the 2nd quarter and it was young Quarterback Luke Ogden proving the difference. He threw a lovely touch pass to spring open David Ingram and then Ian Lasscocok finished the play off by running in behind the right guard for the 1 yard score. "He played pretty well but he still has plenty to learn" said Coach Laurie Frier. "The best thing about him is his willingness to listen. He is a great kid".
Joass added another Brisbane field goal but the game was already starting to get away from Brisbane in the 2nd period when Ogden again found Ingram this time 6 yards deep in the end zone for the 14-6 lead.
The third quarter was highlighted by a crazy period of play where both sides traded turnovers. Back to back interceptions were followed by back to back fumbles and out of the melee it was the Hunters who capitalised when Lasscock scored this time via the pass. Another Interception from Vaivai who was self destructing gave Flash Gordon the chance to break open a big run, 59 yards down the left to score. At 28-6 the game was done. Vaivai then was hurt trying to make a miracle play and his younger brother Robbie came in to set up a consolation score to Robert Woods.
Newcastle defense completely shut down the Maroons and the offense has been vastly improved from the start of the year. It will be a miracle for them to make the play offs but if they do, watch out.
