THE MDW
The University of Music and Perfor-
ming Arts is one of the largest and
most prestigious universities of the arts
in the world; its locations are spread
throughout Vienna. Numerous world-
famous composers, conductors and
musicians have studied and taught
here. About 800 professors teach at
the university, several of whom are
members of the Vienna Philharmo-
nic, Vienna Symphony Orchestra and
the State Opera. Approximately 3000
students from more than 70 countries
around the world study at the Univer-
sity of Music and Performing Arts Vi-
enna.
Since its establishment in 1817, this
institution has received international
recognition for the technical brilliance
and musical-stylistical mastery it af-
fords its students. In addition to the
high demands the university places
on students to learn not only the gre-
at classical works in flm, theatre and
music, but also to intensively study
contemporary music and performing
arts, it also teaches recent scholarly
advances, with special attention given
to the integration of practical and the-
oretical study and research. Students
not only study music, drama and flm
production they also study Vienna,
people and culture.
Events at the University
Approximately 1000 cultural events
take place during each school year,
including student evenings, gradu-
ation recitals, lectures, public guest
courses, concerts, festivals, as well
as opera and theater performances in
Viennas oldest functioning baroque
theater.

About Vienna
Austria is a mountainous country loca-
ted in the heart of Europe. It borders
on South- and Easteuropean coun-
tries like Hungary, the Czech Repu-
blik, Slovakia, Slovenia and Italy, but
also on Germany and Switzerland in
the North and West. Famous Euro-
pean cities like Paris, Berlin, Prague,
London or Rome can be reached from
Vienna within a few hours.
A considerable part of Austria is part
of the mountain range Alps, accordin-
gly hiking, skiing, snowboarding and
cross-country skiing are very popu-
lar. There are beautiful skiing resorts
around Vienna, even though Vienna
is mostly known for its vibrant cultural
life.
Vienna, also described as Europes
cultural capital, is a metropolis with
unique charm and fair. Vienna offers
narrow, medieval alleyways or impe-
rial squares, the Schnbrunn Palace,
the Imperial Palace (Hofburg) in the
footsteps of Sissi and Emperor Franz
Josef, and a majestic architecture
along the Ring boulevard. Vienna is
home of a lively and vast array of
cultural attractions, whether classical
or experimental theatre, flm or dance
festivals, opera, operetta and exhibiti-
ons and concerts.
The city has been synonymous with
music for centuries, and was home to
almost all renowned composers and
musicians throughout the centuries like
Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Haydn,
Strauss, Brahms, Bruckner, Schn-
berg, Webern or Berg. The Vienna
Philharmonic and Vienna Symphony
Orchestra are one of the worlds top
orchestras and the Vienna Boys Choir
is triumphantly successful wherever it
tours. Among the musicians are nu-
merous teachers and alumni of the
MDW. Teachers are also members of
the Vienna States Opera, the Burg-
theater as well as of other renowned
stages in the city.
What is more, in Vienna most diffe-
rent types of audience have formed.
People enjoy musical installations in
museums, discos (for example with
Austrian downbeat music), music-ca-
fs, numerous jazz-sessions, presen-
tations of old- and new-type Viennese
folk-music and a demanding offer in
the feld of modern dance theater.
Actually, there is music and art in
many pubs and restaurants, above all
at the Heurigen, there is music also
in the streets. Visitors can feel that art
is alive in the air of Vienna.

Citizens of countries not listed above:
Note that you will be required to pur-
chase health insurance in your home
country for the duration of your stay in
Austria.
You should always contact the sick-
ness insurance institution to which you
are affliated. It is up to each Member
State to decide how to organise the
distribution of the European Health In-
surance Card on its own territory.
All Member States use the same de-
sign, bearing a European symbol. The
aim is to ensure that the European
Health Insurance Card is immediately
recognised by doctors or health cen-
tres. the European Health Insurance
Card contains a certain amount of
obligatory information, presented in a
standardised way so that the Europe-
an Health Insurance Card can be read
whatever the holders language. This
standard design is only on one side of
the European Health Insurance Card.
Member States are free to choose
their own design for the other side.
The most asked question is: Can I go
to the doctor of my choice?
You can only make use of the Euro-
pean health insurance card if you go
to a health care provider covered by
the health insurance scheme provided
for by law in the host State (Search at
http://www.aekwien.at/997.py). If you
go to a private doctor or establish-
ment, you will not be able to use your
European health insurance card.
Please note that it does not contain
any medical information about the hol-
der (e.g. blood group, medical history,
etc.).

General information
Museum:
WIEN MUSEUM: a new image for Mu-
seen der Stadt Wien
Museen der Stadt Wien have been
given a new name and with it a new
public image. Since October 2003,
the various departments and buildings
belonging to the museum group have
been consolidated under the name
WIEN MUSEUM.
The main building (previously Historical
Museum of the City of Vienna) in the
centre of the city is now called WIEN
MUSEUM KARLSPLATZ. Hermesvilla
in Lainzer Tiergarten, the second
main venue for special exhibitions,
has been renamed WIEN MUSEUM
HERMESVILLA. The other specialist
museums and buildings monuments
to musicians, Clock Museum,
Prater Museum and archaeological
excavations all feature the words
WIEN MUSEUM in addition to their
former names. This move is designed
to emphasize the connecting link
between the various buildings and
exhibition venues.
The aim is to increase public
awareness in Vienna of the museum
group and also to present visitors to
the city with a more coherent concept.
We wish to project ourselves as a
major institution within the city, offering
a service that is available to everyone
living in and visiting Vienna. The new
name highlights this awareness and
our association with the city of Vienna.
It also refects the museums special
focus on the city, its people and its
history. We are not just another
Viennese museum, we are the WIEN
MUSEUM, says Wolfgang Kos.
Diversity is another aspect we wish to
project: WIEN MUSEUM is a general-
purpose metropolitan museum with a
rich and varied collection and a wide
range of exhibition themes. It is more
than just a conventional municipal
museum, history museum or art
museum, since it combines the
features of all of them: past and
present witnesses to the citys history
as well as important artistic and
cultural exhibits.
Wolfgang Kos: Obviously, a museum
as an institution is a place for in-depth
research and long-term collection.
But if it is to move away from the
conventional image, it must also have
a feeling for current moods and new
critical approaches.
Wien Museum offers a special facility
that is quite unusual for Austrian
museums:
FREE ADMISSION all day Sunday to
the permanent exhibitions.

Wien Museum

Train (BB):
For everyone under 26 (= up to the
day before the 26th birthday), there
is the BB VORTEILScard <26. It
costs 19,90 EUR and is valid for one
year after its issuance.
You can get up to 50 per cent reduc-
tions on all trains of BB and the pri-
vate railways, with the exception of
the rack and pinion railways and spe-
cial services. If the card is at the same
time a Euro<26 youth card, there is a
great package offering abundant re-
ductions and services in Austria and
abroad.
For frst time orders, you need a photo
and a valid offcial photo identifcation.
Get the request form now here on our
website or at a station ticket counter.
Public Transport:
Semester ticket for students:
- 50,50 with principal residence in
Vienna
- 100,00 with principal residence
outside from Vienna
- 128,50 without qualify for family
assistance payments
VOR Tickets:
These tickets are valid on all means of
public transport (train, metro, tramway
and buses including night buses) in
Vienna and the surrounding area with
the exception of the City Airport Train
and the special airport buses.
Fare dodging:
Yes, it is possible. No, its not advisab-
le. Plain clothes ticket inspectors pa-
trol the public transport network at all
times. If you are caught without a valid
ticket, you have to pay a penalty fare
of 70 (this includes a free trip to the
nearest police station if you are unab-
le to show the ticket inspector a valid
passport or offcial ID). Bear in mind
that a monthly travel pass is available
for less money.
Tickets can be bought from:
- Ticket machines at metro stations.
There is at least one at every ent-
rance to the station. These very so-
phisticated (and slightly confusing)
machines offer a great variety of ti-
ckets, including travel passes. They
accept all coins and 10 notes and
give change.
- Ticket machines in trams and buses.
Avoid these! They offer only single
tickets and tickets bought from these
machines are more expensive than
those bought elsewhere.
- WL ticket offces. Look for the sign
Vorverkauf (advance tickets).
They can be found at all major me-
tro stations and some tram stations.
They are marked with a K on the city
transport map.
- Railway stations. In the two main rail-
way stations in Vienna (Sdbahnhof
and Westbahnhof), youll only get
them from ticket machines and not
from any of the counters.
- Most tobacconists (Tabak Trafk).
However, not all of them sell tickets.
Those who do usually have a blue
sign with the WL logo (see above) at
the door.
Fares quoted on the next page are va-
lid as of June 2007.

For those students who need a
transcript of records directly after
leaving Vienna:
Pick up a form (Prfungsliste) at the
International Offce. You need a (one)
form for each course. Your teacher
should fll in the form, sign it and give
you a marking.
With these collected forms you PER-
SONALLY go to see Ms. Wrtz at the
Department for Studies and Examina-

Ms. Wrtz will make out the offcial
transcript, which you can pick from
here several days later.
For those students who did not fol-
low the frst mentioned procedure:
Kindly provide Bianca Hrmann with
a complete list of courses which you
have attended during your ERASMUS

whether the made-out transcript of re-
cords is complete before sending it to
your home instituion 6 weeks after the
