ii) These are the capacities of pile derived from sub soil properties, not the structural
capacities of pile.

DISCUSSION ON FOUNDATION ASPECTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

After detail analysis and Design it has been proposed to erect one RCC Bridge of
30.00 m Span for the mentioned chainage of the Rural Road and the Geotechnical aspects
have been envisaged after careful study of the all tests which includes Field Tests for all the
Four numbers of boreholes dug in the site and different distinct layers have been identified.
Considering the all features of the layers it is realized that the average soil is having
moderate to good quality in respect to engineering characters.

The recommendation may be summarised as:

For Foundation below Abutments:

The generalised profile of the bore holes shows Four distinct layers among which the
upper layer is Brownish to yellowish silty sandy clay. Considering the hydrologic
requirements in terms of maximum scour depth, the Scour depth is calculated taking into
account the average strength characteristics of the soil just below the Lower bed level.
There may be considerable difference between average N value of a layer and the N value

considered for the calculating scour depth in the same layer, the reason is that for
calculating scour depth the strength of the soil is considered which is just below the lower
bed level not the average strength of the entire soil layer. The Deflection of the pile For
abutment is consider as the 1% of the pile diameter at MSL level.

The Forth layer, which may be termed as Grayish to yellowish to steel grayish fine to
medium sand and it is very strong in engineering character attaining N-value in the range
of 100. The pile of the abutments are terminated at this layer.

Discussion on
h
Value
For calculating the modulus of subgrade reaction (
h
) average N value just below the
MSL level is taken. It is found that the average N value is 29 for Abutment at this
range. Corresponding to the N = 29 the
h
is calculated as 0.414 kg/cm
3
from IS code
(IS 2911_2010-Table-2,Clause C-2.1).
