f youre out wine tasting and you happen upon Dono dal Cielo Winery in Newcastle, you might not be in a
big hurry to leave. Between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. every Saturday you can listen to live music while you taste their
selection of zinfandels and chardonnays.
There are a lot of people that come for the music, said tasting room manager Raquel Mostajo. Some are just
passing through on the wine trail and they stay longer, instead of moving on. Others enjoy the music while they are
here.
If youd prefer to stay, and you didnt pack that picnic lunch (everythings OK to bring except outside alcohol,
Mostajo said), theres usually an appetizer platter from Newcastle Produce to snack on, and wines are sold by the glass
and by the bottle.
Theres no charge to come and listen to the music, she said. We try to mix it up. Some rock, a ukulele player, a
country rock duo. I dont know what would happen if we stopped.
One thing that would happen is the region would lose a unique music venue at what one of the musicians described
as a unique time frame for entertainment.
Its an unusual time for music but it goes along with a great time to taste wine, said David Swart of Midnight Sun.
Its a wonderful way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Its a very, very wonderful ambiance at the tasting room, they
make people feel like part of the family. Just a sense of hospitality and friendliness you dont fnd everywhere.

ot quite ready for dinner but cant stay another minute in the offce? The Holiday
Inn is playing its hospitality card and invites you to unwind on their patio for a
couple of hours. A few tastes, a couple of bites, a little music -- all the makings of
a casual get together are there, its all locally sourced and its all on the house.
Its a great networking opportunity for wineries, musicians and artists, said Karin
Koons, director of sales for the Auburn Holiday Inn. Everybody can help each other. Its
also an opportunity for our guests to see we have local wineries. Weve had people stay
an extra day to go wine tasting.
Running from Memorial Day to Labor Day for the third summer now, Friday Night
Flights alternates between Placer County Wineries and Sierra Vintners. The appetizers
come gratis, not only from the hotels own Maxs Restaurant, but also from local eateries
ranging from Bootleggers to Beach Hut Deli. The music is acoustic, but its been known
to kick up a notch now and then to get people dancing.
Its getting bigger and better, Koons said. Its an opportunity for our guests to
know who is in our community. And it makes your local Auburn Holiday Inn a friendly
place to come to.

ome are named for families (Green), others for the region (Bear River). Some
turn to a foreign language to identify their brand (Cante ao Vinho: Sing to the
Wine).
But they all share one thing in common: the Placer County Wine Trail. And to kick
off the month of August, 19 wineries are taking part in Grape Days of Summer, a self-
guided tour that includes special tastings, food pairings and educational experiences.
Every winery is required to have an activity based around agriculture or winemaking,
said Jocelyn Maddux of Lone Buffalo Vineyards. We are having a Viognier Vertical
Vibration, a tasting of different vintages of our Rhone-style blend.
And each winery will have some type of food. From the simple (barbecue hot dogs and
chips, shaved ice and chocolate treats), to the sublime (herbed focaccia with roasted
garlic, heirloom tomatoes, basil oil, champagne vinegar and balsamic reduction).
As for Lone Buffalo, well, once again we look to the name.
Well be serving bison sliders, catered by Matt Williams Gourmet Garage, Maddux
said.
A two-day passport to Grape Days of Summer runs $45 and you are free to take in as
many wineries as you like. Sunday only is $25, and a designated driver can take part in
the festivities save the drinking for just $10.
Typically, when people go wine tasting, theyll do three wineries, Maddux said.
But its more like fve a day for this event. Some go all-out and visit as many as eight.
Some of the participating wineries, like Lone Buffalo, have been involved since the
event began fve years ago. Others are relatively new to the trail and are gearing up for
their second Grape Days.
We are on the fringe and we got 50 cars in two days, said Jeff Evans of Bear River
Winery in Meadow Vista, the northernmost site on the trail. We had 800 glasses and
we ran out. For us, were lucky to get three to fve cars on a regular weekend.
In addition to the food and the activities, most wineries will have something special
in a bottle, barrel or glass. Evans said they will be releasing their 2013 Barbera Rose
that weekend.

Fawnridge Winery in Auburn will be offering barrel tastes of a brand new
cabernet, a cabernet franc and a blend they are getting ready to bottle.
Their activity will be tied into the barrel tasting as well, as owner Stewart
Perry will compare the essence of Hungarian oak verse American oak
barrels and what they impart in favor to the fnished wine. So you get the
idea. There will be something for everyone, from the white-wine-sipping
crowd to the serious sommeliers.
Our reputation is starting to build, Perry said. People are curious,
coming out to check out what our wines are all about. A lot is the result of
the success weve had in recent wine competitions. A number of us were
awarded medals at the State Fair and Chronicle Competitions.
River Rock Ranch sits on the outskirts of the trail, about as far west as it
goes. And like their counterparts to the north, Bear River, they are in their
second year of Grape Days. But its been an eye-opener when it comes to
the locals perception of their industry.
We also took part in the Lincoln Wine Fest, and a lot of folks from the
Roseville area showed up and were wonderfully involved in learning about
Placer County wines, owner Austin Lindeman said. Even they did not
know this was a wine area.
But word is getting out. Even Lindeman admits that before he got into
the business, when he was going on wine trips himself, he always found
himself heading south. And while that used to be a common occurrence,
more and more people are learning about Placer Countys wineries, thanks
to events like Grape Days.
A lot of people come in and say they used to go to El Dorado or Amador
counties, said Tom Farinha of Cante ao Vinho Winery in Rocklin. But this
is so close and there are so many wineries around here with a lot of nice
wine.
And food and live music and tours and more, at least for one weekend
each year.
So it doesnt matter if theyre named for families (Ciotti), regions (Secret
Ravine) or some fancy foreign phrase (Dono dal Cielo: Gift from Heaven), a
month from now theyll all be caught up in the crush, so catch them while
you can still bend the winemakers ear or maybe taste something before its
in a bottle. Its time you hit the trail.

bout 30 years ago a seamstress named
Susan Lamela was disgusted with the
quality of clothes she was being asked to
repair.
I could do better than this with trash, she said
-- and thus, a movement was born.
Haute Trash was formed in 1986 and became
a nonproft 20 years later. An artist collaborative,
their mission is to create and produce performance
art out of trash in order to entertain, educate and
empower others to rethink, reuse and recycle.

We want to raise awareness about societys
wasteful ways and to teach people better things to
do with trash, said Kathi Griffs, aka Prima Debris.
There are better ways to shop and ways to use less
packaging.
She said all trash designers work under aliases.
The late Lamelas was Polly Ethylene and Haute
Trash is littered with mirthful monikers, from Rayona
Visqueen to Redusa DTrash. Theyll all pile into Pilot
Peak Winery on Aug. 15 for an honest-to-goodness
runway fashion show, complete with a catered
dinner and wine tasting.
Its all tongue in cheek, Griffs said. Well have an
emcee narrating and hell make remarks like, They
found it alongside the road or out of a dumpster
while he mixes in facts to educate the crowd.
The learning aspect goes beyond the runway.
Besides taking their fashion shows on the road,
Griffs said one of her favorite things to do is their
educational programs with kids.
They really get inspired, really take a hold of it,
she said. We talked about the Great Pacifc Garbage
Patch and it was amazing how many people had no
idea it existed.
The important thing, she said, is to get more
people involved. After one of their shows, most
people will look at trash in a different way. The
members of Haute Trash already do. One designer
made a piece out of pop tops, an absolute feat of
engineering, according to Griffs. Another knitted
a ball gown with long trains out of plastic. A piece
made out of old nylons is called Born to Run.
A lot of designers will go through fashion
magazines for inspiration, she said. I let the
material come to me and then I determine what Ill
do.
Old maps and torn posters will act as fabric for her
next outft. A Hefty bag full of used harnesses awaits
their turn. They say one mans junk is another mans
treasure, but it could also be some womans next
prom dress.

here are a few people who really earn the moniker legend. Wanda Jackson,
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Rockabilly Hall of Fame inductee, known
as the Queen of Rockabilly, is one of them. Her sexy and dangerous sound
once wreaked havoc on Eisenhower-era ears; and her famous fringe, hoop earrings
and boots added glamour to her raw, powerful voice, every bit the equal to her
contemporaries Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. The Oklahoma
native, 76, will play the Center for the Arts on Aug. 16. We talked with Jackson over
the phone and asked her about opening for Elvis, working with Jack White and the
six decades in between.
When did you discover your passion for music?
I was about 6, Im not sure I remember but Im told people would ask what are
you going to be when you grow up? and I would always say a girl singer. So, I think
it was born in me. My dad was a musician and had a band for a while before he
married, so it just comes natural for me. He taught me to play guitar from about the
age of 7 or 8 years old. He would play the fddle and I would accompany him. Then I
began singing and learning lyrics to songs.
Growing up, were there certain musicians and singers that infuenced you?
Rose Maddox was one, I liked the way she sang and performed. And I listened to
big bands like Bob Wills, Spade Cooley and Tex Williams.
Were you writing music or were you mostly covering songs?
Well I didnt cover songs. I think it was the 9th grade. I began recording my junior
year of high school, and so I used those songs that I had written on the Decca label.
You opened for Elvis Presley when you were really young. How was it touring
with Elvis and what did you learn from him?
By the time I graduated high school I had a couple of songs on the Billboard
country charts and I was getting a bit of a name established. My dad bought a
Billboard paper and was looking through it and I didnt have a manager yet and
didnt know how to book a date. But he found a name, Bob Neal out of Memphis,
and he called him and Bob was interested. He said he had a young man that he was
booking that is getting very popular very fast and I would like to have a girl on the bill
with him. That was my frst work after high school, with Elvis.
What was he like?
Well, I thought he was very handsome and very nice and then when I saw him
perform I was blown away.
He mixed country and rock. Did that infuence you to do the same?
It was through his encouragement that I tried it. He just knew that it was going
to be very big. He explained to me that the audiences now are kids, and kids are
beginning to have a voice on what radio played, and what record stores keep in
stock. They are getting their own money so they are able to buy their own records so
you need to records songs that appeal to those kids. Wed always aimed our songs
at the adults. Oh, I jumped in with both feet and tried it. I couldnt get airplay, that
type of music wasnt accepted very well by the adults.
You name a lot of the people that you associate with like Jerry Lee Lewis and
Elvis. Were there other females doing rockabilly at that point?
Not at that point. I was the frst.
You were turned down initially by Capitol Records when Ken Nelson said that
girls dont sell records, then you ended up there a few years later. Did you ever
force him to eat a little bit of crow?
I dont know if I did or not. I dont think so. Ken Nelson, he was a smart producer,
mine actually for 18 years. He made that statement to Hank Thompson who was
my mentor. Ken said, the girl can sing OK, but girls dont sell records. Up until that
point they had just been part of an orchestra. They were more like window dressing,
wearing formals. That was a big change when women started to sing the county
music. Kitty Wells was actually the frst women who broke down those doors. I was
kind of frst too but I like to give her the credit because he had a number one song
so they couldnt any longer avoid women. We were coming out of the woodwork
and into their face.
You really paved the way for a lot of female singers. I know Cyndi Lauper,
Adele and Chrissie Hynde have all mentioned you as infuences on their careers.
Yes, and that is so sweet.
You had a string of hit songs in Germany and Japan. What were the audiences
like there?

I didnt go to Japan until I was riding high with the number one song in the whole country,
Fujiyama Mama. It just stayed there for the whole summer. The American military helped that, not
sure how exactly, but probably by asking for it and forcing Capitol Records to press more. Then my
next number one song was in German. I sang in Germany as well as some of the bordering countries.
But Ive never really had a number one song in country or in rock in America.
That surprises me.
Well, Ive got all these fans you know so I havent needed it.
As rockabilly began to decline in popularity due in part to the British invasion you
moved into traditional country music. Were you able to bring elements of rockabilly with you?
I probably stayed more traditional. I kept trying and trying to break through and get radio air play
and record sales, but it just didnt happen for me. We would release a 45 and it would have an A and
a B side. It would have a country song and a rock song. If I got air play it was on the country side of
the record, so I just decided I am not ever going to be able to do this rock stuff.
Your Christian song, My Iron Skillet, talks about beating up your lover. Was there a confict
with your rock and roll persona in a conservative recording environment?
I dont know, but the Lord helped me to see that I could do both and after all it was just music.
It wasnt like writing books about beating your husband up. Eventually I was doing all Gospel. My
career has taken big swings like a pendulum kind of hit all of it a little bit but Ive always liked the
versatility.
You made a big comeback a couple years ago and teamed up with Jack White. How did that
come about?
His music, you know, isnt my kind of music but I know his talent and his creativity and genius type
brain of his. So he actually called me. He was a fan of mine. A girl in Nashville, who does makeup
and hair, she said you ought to do a duet with Jack White. He loves your music and is a big fan. My
publicist got in touch with his people and they were open to the idea.
Did you hear the album he did with Loretta Lynn?
Yes. I thought, man if this number one rock n roll star can get her an album that got her four
Grammys, I should to try to pursue that. So anyway, Jack called me here at home one day and asks
if I would be interested in doing an album for his record label, The Third Man and I, of course, said I
will have to think about it OK, thats long enough.
Youve recorded albums with a lot of people. How did his style differ?
I think he already had an idea of exactly what kind of album he wanted to record with me. I mean
he is just in on every phase of it. He just had all the patience of Job. He challenged me and pushed
me really hard but he was very nice about it and very patient. So it was a great experience for me.
And now you have a new one with Justin Townes Earl. How does his style differ from Jack?
He said, you know, lets dont try to top that Jack White album. Lets go back to the more simple
style of rockabilly, and I felt that was a good idea.
MW: I love your version of California Stars. Were you familiar with the band Wilco when you
heard that?
No, but I liked the song very much. Its my granddaughters favorite song. It was a fun song to
sing, and of course the lyrics were Woody Guthries, one of our Oklahoma musicians.
What are you favorite albums to pull out and listen to?
I listen to music every single day from the time I start dressing until I go to bed, in my car and
everywhere. I have a pretty versatile library of CDs. I listen to Tanya Tucker, Vince Gill, Garth Brooks,
Ray Charles, and lets see, I like Rosie Flores and Jann Browne. I cant think of all the names and some
of the bands from Europe that I worked with; theyll send me a new CD and some of them are very
good.
Do you tour Europe a lot? There seems to be a big comeback in rockabilly there.
I am not sure it ever really went away. These people have records that go way, way back, the
original records. And they are young people; they are not my age. They are getting turned on to this
music; we pick up new fans everyday through the internet.
Do you fnd that the rockabilly being done now is different or has changed?
I think they have stayed pretty true to the original. Maybe the things that they sing about are a lot
different. I think the rockabilly bunch want to stay very traditional theyre not looking to change it so
it just sounds real good to me.
What have you learned about art and music over these years and how might it have changed
you?
I dont know because I have never done anything else. My whole life Ive sang. I never earned a
penny doing anything other than singing; which is kind of amazing. God has blessed me greatly. Elvis
kind of taught me, not in so many words but by being around him, taught me not to take myself so
serious and to loosen up and have fun with the audience. And I learned a lot from my daddy. And my
husband, I learned from him also. I am a good student. I enjoy picking up things and advice. I dont
ever mind constructive criticism. Most artists dont want that, but it doesnt bother me. Anyway, life
has been good to me and music has been my life and I think thats why I dread the coming day when
I am no longer able to do it. Ive been a celebrity singer since I was about 12 or 13.
What would you say is the single greatest piece of music youve recorded, the one song you want
to be remembered by?
I kind of think it would be Right or Wrong. Not because I wrote it, but because of the song itself
and the simplicity and its just a pretty song. People who have never heard it before, when I do it on
stage, they love it almost as much as the ones that are familiar with
it. Now if you want to know what song depicts my life that would be
Lets Have a Party. Thats the two sides of the coin.
Have you been to the Sierra Nevadas before?
I dont have a full summer schedule in front of me. Its kind of hard
when I dont know where Im going and cant remember where Ive
been.
I think that sounds like the name of your next single.
Sounds pretty good, doesnt it!
Is there anything you would like to say to prepare the audience?
I guess when they come to the concert they should bring a seat
belt!
