If you think, after 26 years, lo-
cals are tired of the annual Pine
Barrens Festival, you would be
mistaken.
Its something they look for-
ward to all year, Amy Morgan of
Southampton said of her two
daughters. They love playing the
games and riding the rides. Oh,
and the food.
While funnel cakes, fried Oreos
and ice cream are crowd fa-
vorites, the food and beer tents
are stocked with much more than
normal carnival fare as visitors
can choose from crabs and clams
to pulled pork and chicken wings.
Its a night out thats different
from the usual, Ted Samuels
said. You can have dinner out-
side, listen to some music, its re-
ally nice. And you know youll see
someone you know walking
around.
Father Andrew Jamieson said
the parish expected more than
30,000 visitors throughout the
week. The big crowds and carni-
val atmosphere lead many to
compare the event to a night at
the beach.
Its really an awesome event to
have so close to home. Its like a
night out on the Ocean City or
Wildwood boardwalk, said Mark
Smith, who made the short trek
from Medford Lakes with his wife
and daughter. To have all the
rides and games and food here is
great for us. Its easy to come any

Shore for a night like this.
More than 450 volunteers
decked out in lime green 2014
Pine Barrens Festival t-shirts
donated their time to the event
both within and outside the
parish. The parish maintains all
the booths and the only part of
the event run by an outside
source is the rides.
The Ferris wheel proved to be
the most popular ride with
teenage couples hoping to get
stuck at the top while the teacups
and bumper cars were the draw
for younger riders.
Majestic Midways continues
to be great in providing the rides
and they draw a lot of people to
the festival, Jamieson said.
The only obstacle for parents?
Convincing their kids they have
to leave. Oh, and that they cant
come back every night.
You try not to give them too

laugh. But Im sure well be back

if it is just to play some games for
a little bit.

Burlington County College is inviting all
families and community members to ex-
plore what the college can offer through in-
teractive science, criminal justice and arts
exhibits as part of an end-of-summer
showcase next month.
Burlington County Colleges Communi-
ty Showcase will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on
Thursday, Aug. 14, on the Mt. Laurel cam-
pus to celebrate the outstanding programs
the college offers to community members
of all ages.
The showcase will feature hands-on pro-
gramming for all ages, including:
A crime scene set up by the criminal
justice program
Hands-on marine science stations
Culinary arts demonstrations
DNA testing on strawberries
Soccer clinic taught by some of the
best community college players in the
country
Student undergraduate research
project presentations testing for West
Nile Virus and mercury levels.
We are very excited to welcome the
community and showcase some of the out-
standing programs and instruction we
offer for community members of all ages
from toddlers in swim classes to adults
looking to gain a new career skill or per-
sonal enrichment, interim President
David Spang said. This is a great opportu-
nity to spend a fun afternoon with your
neighbors at Burlington County College.
Guests are asked to register for the free
event online at www.bcc.edu/community-
showcase.
Events will be take place indoors and
outdoors, weather permitting, and will in-
clude music, entertainment and high-tech
science equipment.
Burlington County Colleges Community Showcase is Aug. 14
N
ext week, on Monday, Aug. 4 to
be precise, our company is cel-
ebrating its 10-year anniver-
sary. Ten years ago on that date, we
published the first newspaper in the
companys history The Haddonfield
Sun.
Ten years later, we publish 10 news-
papers each week, covering the towns
of Haddonfield, Moorestown, Cherry
Hill, Voorhees, Marlton, Medford, Mt.
Laurel, Tabernacle, Shamong and
Princeton. Weve grown a lot over the
last 10 years, but we havent lost sight
of our roots.
On Monday, when we turn the Big
One Zero, well be hosting a group of
our employees, customers, business
partners and community leaders who
helped make these 10 years so special
for us. Jack Tarditi, a leader in the
local community, will be the keynote
speaker.
The celebration at the Woodcrest
Country Club in Cherry Hill will in-
clude all the great things that every
party needs good food, good drinks, a
good atmosphere, a good speaker, good
conversation and good, classic silent
auction.
But what will make it extra special
and what were most excited about is
the good that our 10-year anniversary
celebration will help kick off.
As part of the celebration, we are
proud to announce the start of the Sun
newspapers Ray of Hope founda-
tion. Under the umbrella of the South
Jersey Foundation, the Ray of Hope
will raise money to give back to the
local communities we cover.
Back in the day, when we were a
much smaller company, we ran an an-
nual contest called the Ray of Hope.
Readers would submit short essays
nominating a local group, organiza-
tion, Little League team, PTA, Girl
Scout troop and others who were most
deserving of a monetary award. We
published all these essays, and let our
readers vote to select the winner. And
we gave that winner $500.
The Ray of Hope foundation we are
starting will help us get back to our
roots of giving back in a tangible way
to the communities that have support-
ed us and helped us grow over these
last 10 years. And this time, were look-
ing to make a bigger impact than just
$500 to one group each year.
Our party on Monday will be the
first fundraiser in our ongoing effort to
give back. Well have other ways that
well raise money with your help
in the coming months.
At the end of the day, though, where
well need your help the most is telling
us which local groups deserve the fi-
nancial aid. As we start to build a big-
ger and bigger fund, well run similar
contests to our original Ray of Hope to
help decide which organizations are
most deserving. And then well make a
contribution.
We cant wait to start, and were hop-
ing youll help us help those who do the
most in our communities.

Tournament at Little Mill Coun-

With their entry fee, golfers
were treated to lunch, prizes, a

students throughout the four

The annual scholarships honor
the memory of K. Kiki Konstanti-

Each year, a total of 16 stu-

ZANE CLARK/The Sun
July 22 marked the 22nd annual Kiki Konstantinos Scholarship Golf
Tournament. The annual tournament raises money for the K. Kiki
Konstantinos Scholarship Foundation, which awards scholarships to
students at the four Lenape Regional High School District schools.
The foundation honors the memory K. Kiki Konstantinos, superin-
tendent of the Lenape district from 1963-1993.
ed since its establishment.
Foundation Co-Chairperson
and Evesham Township Council
member Steve Zeuli was on hand
at the event to greet guests and
oversee the events success.
Zeuli said Konstantinos amaz-
ing 30-year career as superintend-
ent was unheard of, and Konstan-
tinos should be remembered for
setting the high standard of ex-
cellence the district still achieves
to this day.
He is the one that I believe
that set the tone for the excellence
in the district, Zeuli said. If you
were able to ask him, I think that
would be the thing that hes most
proud of, the standard of excel-
lence that he set, not just for the
students, but for the faculty and
the staff.
A separate committee within
the foundation determines schol-
arship recipients through the use
of standards set by Konstantinos
himself, and Zeuli said he be-
lieves thats why people can look
at the past recipients and see
truly deserving students.
There are standards that were
set up by Kiki himself, Zeuli
said. He emphasized academics,
athletics and activities, and its
got to be an equal combination of
all those things. I think if you
look at the past winners, youll
see some really terrific kids.
This years event, like past
events, was almost at full capaci-
ty, and Zeuli said it always gets a
great reception.
Well have 120 golfers here
today, Zeuli said at the tourna-
ment. I think we can take
around 122 or 124. Its a full day
lunch, golf, cocktails, dinner, a lot
of raffle prizes, and we have
never had a rainout in 22 years.
One golfer at the event was
Greg D'Orazio from AJM Insur-
ance, which sponsored the lunch
before the start of the tourna-
ment.
DOrazio said the foundation
and the scholarships it provides
were definitely worth supporting.
Theyre great things to be able
to support in the community and
for local businesses to be able to
give back, DOrazio said. It
means a lot. Were happy to par-
ticipate, absolutely. Im looking
forward to it.
Echoing DOrazios sentiments
was John Comegno, with John
Comegno Law Group, one of the
events sponsors for the past
decade.
Comegno said his group ad-
mires the phenomenal education-
al services the district provides,
and hes glad the foundation pro-
vides a way that allows people to
support the Lenape District and
its students.
Ive played in this for close to
20 years, Comegno said. Its a
really fun outing, a great spirit.
Little Mill is a great track, and the
foundation does a great job of or-
ganizing this.
