VICTIM: Troubled teen fel t safe on the road

: FROM 8
: "Roger" and was living with a
family on Alexander Avenue.
; Parry never heard from him
! again. A letter shesent to Corval-
! lis cameback unopened. She had
: police go to the address. No one
; had heard of Kevin or "Roger."
; Parry was sure that her son
; had joined a cult. For a while,
; she suspected that he had fallen
;jffider the spell of Charles Man-
; ?8P-
; f Kevin was a follower. He'd
been on (Ritalin). He wasn't a
; strong person. I figured someone
; had to be stepping in and taking
my place. And that meant a
cul t," Parry said,
i What she couldn't know was
that Kevin had gotten a swastika
r tattoed on his left ankle. And he
i^had somehow ventured into the
;:hunting grounds of Randy Kraft
[ who snared his victims along
; the highways of Southern Cali-
;:fbrnia.
ivPerhaps Kevin met his death
aiitchhiking home to Lake Elsi-
nore, Parry said. Hewound up in
Huntington Beach, an anony-
mous body dumped near a re-
mote field called "Airplane
Hill."
Hehad been stabbed repeated-
ly, castrated, hit with a pipelike
object and throttled. Officer
Clemens, then 29 and four years
out of Vietnam, had seen plenty
of bodies. But none like this. I t
was Clemens' first homicide call,
and it left himfeeling vulnerable
in the cold dark night, his flash-
light sweeping the shadowy
brush.
"Y ou're out in the middle of
nowhere and here's a body fresh-
ly dropped. Where's the guy who
dfd this? I s he down the road? I s
he behind the bushes?" said
"Clfemens, now a 51-year-old ser-
'g6ant.
'-"."Clemens never forgot the
-^bung corpse in the hip-hugger
jteans. For years, Huntington
Beach police and Orange County
"Sheriff's Department investiga-
^tors tried to identify the body
linked to Kraft through a "score-
'card" kept by the killer.
' [Police artists circulated
'Sketches. They compared dental
charts. Fingerprints. Nothing
worked.
"""Until early this month, when
Murine ran theprints through an
ever-growing computer data
-base of Western states. The
Sprints matched those of a young
Kevin Bailey, arrested in Oregon
fivedays beforehis murder. Ke-
vin had given his birthday as
IP55, apparently trying to hide
from authorities that he was a
juvenile.
Murine was able to find Ke-

ENTERTAINMENT: The

show, had the females

Reuters
TOKYO Seven J apanese
women were rushed to a hospital
with alcohol poisoning after a
drinking bout recorded for a tele-
vision variety show, a spokes-
man for the TV network said to-
day.
Ten women, ages 21-44, were
downing whisky, beer or wine in
a variety-show contest called
"Drinking Battle Royal " on Sun-
day. They had to finish each
glass in under three minutes and
take a five- to 10-minute break
before the next one.
Onewoman managed nine dou-
ble whisky-and-waters in an
hour.
But some of the women com-
plained that they felt bad, and a
doctor who was standing by in
case of problems called an am-
bulance.
Seven were taken to the hospi-
tal, of whomthreewere admitted
for treatment, including intrave-
nous drips. They were expected
to recover within a day.
"We haven't done this kind of
contest much in the past, and
now this has happened we may
not do it again for a while," said
a Fuj i Television spokesman.
The program, called "Thurs-
day Family Land," was sched-
uled to be broadcast March 23
but may now be canceled, he
said.

"No! I t's not Kevin. I t's not!"
Parry screamed into the tele-
phone, rejecting the news. Then
she embraced it.
Two years ago. Parry said,
God told her in a dreamthat Ke-
vin was dead. But she couldn't
persuade Mormon officials to
grant her son the spiritual en-
dowments membership in the
priesthood given to males 11 or
older that would free Kevin
from "spirit prison."
Now, Parry is preparing to
have a family member stand in
proxy for Kevin as the church
seals him to Christ and to his
family, for eternity.
"I had been hoping he was
dead," Parry said, "because I
knew he'd besafeif hewas dead.
Heavenly Father takes care of
his own."
