Question 02
a) Explain the following terms
i. Indicator power
ii. Indicated mean effective pressure
iii. Indicated thermal efficiency
iv. Brake power
v. Brake mean effective pressure
vi. Brake thermal efficiency
vii. Volumetric efficiency
viii. Specific fuel consumption

b) A six-cylinder, gasoline engine operates on the four-stroke cycle. The bore of each cylinder is
80 mm and the stroke is 100 mm. The clearance volume per cylinder is 70 cc. At the speed of
4100 rpm, the fuel consumption is 19.8 kg/hr and the torque developed is 160 Nm.
Calculate:
i. Brake power
ii. The brake mean effective pressure
iii. Brake thermal efficiency if the calorific value of the fuel is 44000 kJ/kg
iv. The relative efficiency on a brake power basis assuming the engine works on the
constant volume cycle = 1.4 for air.

Question 03
a) Explain the followings with neat sketches.
i. Direction injection fuel system
ii. Indirect injection fuel system

b) What are the advantages and disadvantages of above two systems

c) Some mechanics tend to remove the thermostat valve when there is an overheating problem in the
vehicles cooling system. Explain the implication of removal of the thermostat valve?

d) Write short notes on the followings:
i. Valve timing of an engine
ii. Valve toss
iii. Morse test
