ASSISTANT FARM MANAGER (Farmer IV)
The Assistant Farm Manager works under the direction and supervision of the Farm Manager and Director of Operations to ensure the successful operation of the aquaculture unit and provides assistance to the farm manager for the successful operation of the farm. The assistant farm manager is responsible for fish welfare, water quality, and the production of N.E.W. Additionally the assistant manager assists in managing the production staff and helps to ensure the daily operations of the facility are complete. This position can best be described as a jack of all trades. This employee shall provide Selovita and Florida Urban Organics the following services and/or duties:
Coordinate daily procedures and farm directives Assist in the supervision of the production team Participate in harvests Assist with the execution of daily farm directives Maintain an operations log Organize and record farm data Ensure fish welfare, fish growth, and water quality Responsible for facilitys equipment, machinery, and tools Accountable for performance of aquaculture facility Submit farm reports Bridge the gap between aquaculture and the farm Help to plan farm schedules Enforce policy and standards Perform the role of the maintenance division Meet production goals and objectives Ensure cleanliness of facility Manage farm instrumentation Delegate custodial/ grounds maintenance endeavors Assist with the composition of Standard Operating procedures Uphold Global GAP and organic certifications Additional job responsibilities as necessary.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The assistant farm manager works under the supervision of the Farm Manager and Director of Operations to ensure the daily operation and functionality of the farm. Excellent leadership and management skills are necessary for this position as the assistant farm manager often serves as crew leader in the absence of the farm manager. A positive attitude, thorough and efficient pace, strong work ethic must be maintained, understanding that the assistant farm manger will always be setting an example for the production staff. You must have a strong and attentive
understanding of the rhythm of farm work. When a task is close to completion the assistant manger must be ready to transition the crew to the next task(s). It is your responsible to ensure efficiency and productive of the farm. Patience, poise, and the way the assistant farm manager exhibits behavior must be a top priority.
The position requires flexibility and adaptability as unexpected factors can often affect the daily plan. It is important that the assistant farm manager is abreast of daily and weekly weather forecasts. Monthly feedback sessions will occur between the farm managers and the director of operations. This is a vital time to reflect on the working relationship and communication to do performance evaluation, and discuss any difficulties or areas for improvement. This is also a time to communicate observations of performance or issues that may need assistance or addressing.
The assistant farm manager must be familiar with all farm directives associated with the operation of the farm. The assistant farm manager will be responsible for initiating and implementing approved directives from the farm manager. While many of the day to day tasks involved with running the Fish House are executed by the aqua technicians, it is the responsible of the assistant farm manager to ensure directives within this department are completed correctly and up to standard. The assistant farm manager must have a strong and advanced working knowledge of aquaculture. In addition to the operation of the aquaculture, the assistant farm manager will partake in all farm directives ensuring production goals are met. Daily responsibilities will vary dependent on the daily schedule and will be dictated by the sales of fish waste water, produce, microgreens or fish.
The urban farming and aquaponic industry with the aid of technology is rapidly progressing, as a result, on the job training and knowledge acquired by production personal has significate value to the company. For this reason, operations and information acquired on the job must be documented accurately and concisely. The assistant farm manager must enter observations, findings, and relevant farm directives of the entire facility into a daily log. These documents must be kept updated, professional, and organized for record keeping purposes. Furthermore, operational parameters and information acquired through the week must be communicated to the administration. It is the responsibility of the assistant farm manager to email administration including managing partners information related to the operation of the farm. Concise and clear communication of this information has a direct impact on the success of the farm and must be kept a top priority. The successful performance of these responsibilities by the farm management team will ultimately result in the use this information and aid Selovita in the development of future systems.
The assistant farm manager will assist the farm manager in training employees on record keeping standards and uphold companywide policies at the facility including standard operating procedures. Training employees is an ongoing responsible. This employee must provide solid and constructive feedback to the farm manager and administration in a timely manner.
Acknowledgement that the overall success of the farms business is directly related to quality control and food safety is required. The assistant farm manager must be able to learn and implement harvest standards and enforcement of standards in a timely manner. Food Safety and
regulations regarding Organic certification, Global GAP, and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations is of top priority. Additionally, Selovtia trains all of its employees on good hygiene practices and standards for food safety, the assistant farm manager will assist with the enforcement of these standards and uphold all adopted policies and procedures related to these stated standards.
The assistant farm manager is required to arrive fifteen minutes before the rest of the crew to get organized. This time may be used for farm observations, equipment checks, to prepare for harvest or to plan for the morning delegation of tasks. All farm employees must check in with the farms managers at the starting and ending huddles. At the end of the day, the assistant farm manager typically stays later then the crew when necessary, to organize future directives, etc. This position requires advanced knowledge of all positions within the farm and will often require filling positions of others on the farm crew.
The right person for this position is dedicated, dependable, detail-oriented, well-organized, good humored, flexible and demonstrates effective time management. Great commutation and self- motivation are imperative as is a genuine interest in growing wholesome, organic food on a small sustainable farm. Additionally, the position requires someone who understands the intricacies and challenges associated with a startup business, never losing sight that this is an operation that must be economically independent to achieve its mission of a being a sustainable food system. .
Employee accepts and agrees to such employment, and agrees to be subject to the general supervision, advice and direction of the Farm Manager and Director of Operations. Employee also agrees to perform (i) the duties outlined in the description and other duties as are customarily performed by an employee in a similar position, and (ii) such other and unrelated services and duties as may be assigned to employee from time to time by Selovita as long as they do not conflict with the implementation of the employees primary responsibilities. Employee agrees to be subject to Selovitas policies outlined in the company handbook and agrees to adhere to the Non-Disclosure Agreement.
