Is answering "As Salam Alaikum" with the words Adaab Arz

What is the ruling of the learned Ulama in this case: A few people are seated in one place together and a person came to them and said As Salaamu
Alaikum In Answer the replied Adaab Arz or !asleemat or "andagi or one person raised his hand up to his forehead and did not answer an#thing
$erball#% &ow did the person fulfill the 'ard(e()ifaa#ah or not*
!he Answer: &o +!he obligation was not fulfilled, and all of them are sinful until an# one of them does not sa# Wa Alaikumus salaam or Wa alaik or As
salaamu Alaikum% !he words mentioned abo$e such as bandagi tasleemaat Adaab etc% are not words of salaam% -ust to raise the hand is
meaningless unless the words of salaam are mentioned with it% It is in .addul /uhtaar from 0aheeri#ah as follows: !he words of salaam in all places
is As Salaamu Alaikum or sa#ing it with the tanween and with the e1ception of this all the other wa#s of the ignorant is not regarded as salaam%
I sa# that the repl# will not be fulfilled since the answer to salaam will be salaam alone or with e1tra words of salaam such as mention of merc# and
blessings and this is on the basis of the command of Allah 2When salaam is being con$e#ed to #ou with salaam then #ou too repl# to the salaam
with a good salaam or return the same3 It must be noted that this manner that has been adopted be it words or signs then the# will either be regarded
as salaam or not% In the second case +if it is not salaam, then one will not be relie$ed from the responsibilit# of repl#ing to the salaam% In the first
instance this new wa# that has been adopted is neither salaam and not is it better than salaam for that which has been newl# established cannot be
better than what has been mentioned in the Sharia and the responsibilit# of fulfilling the Waa4ib(e()ifaa#ah +that which was compulsor# upon e$er#
one of them,%
It is in /irkaat Shareef as follows: It has been pro$en correctl# from 5adith(e(/utawaatira that to make salaam with words +$erball#, is sunnat and
the repl# is waa4ib in the same manner +$erball#,%
It is in the 5adith Shareef that the 5ol# 6rophet Sall Allaho Alaihi Wa Sallam said 5e is not from us who imitates others% 7o not imitate the 4ews or
the 8hristians for the greeting of 4ew is b# raising the finger and the greeting of the of the 8hristian is b# raising the palm of the hand% !his has been
narrated b# !irmizi from Abdullah ibn Umar +radi Allahu anhu, and he has also said that the narration is 7aeef% Allama Ali 9aari sa#s that this has been
mentioned possibl# due to research based on narration of Amr bin Shuaib on the authorit# of his father who narrated from his grandfather and it is true
that there has been difference of opinion regarding this before but the thing to ha$e confidence in here is that this is actuall# a 5assan narration% !his
is especiall# since Su#uti has narrated this 5adith in -aame Sagheer from Ibn Amar thus the difference of opinion has ended and the difficult# has
been alle$iated%
I sa# 2/a# Allah ha$e merc# on Ali 9aari% Su#uti has gi$en the reference of this 5adith to be !irmizi thus the situation has been corrected and the
issue has been resol$ed% !hus there is no real weakness in !irmizi as has been assumed for the ma4orit# of the Ulama including !irmizi ha$e :uoted
the narration of Amar bin Shu3aib from his father who narrated from his grandfather that clearl# the 6rophet +Sall Allaho Alaihi Wa Sallam, said%
7isappro$al is permissible% !he reason that the narration is said to be of weak transmission is because the narration is from Ibn ;ahi3a% !irmizi sa#s
29utaiba bin ;ahi3a narrated a 5adith to me from Amar bin Shu3aib who narrated from his father who narrated from his grandfather that $eril# the
6rophet +Sall Allaho Alaihi Wa Sallam, said +as per 5adith,% !irmizi said that the transmission of this 5adith is weak and still narrated it%
Ibn /ubaarak narrated this 5adith from Ibn ;ahi3a and he did not remo$e it% And it is e$ident that in the book of &ikah under the topic regarding that
person who marries a woman and then gi$es her talaa: before he is intimate with her +/akes 7ukhool,% !he 5adith being mentioned has thus been
narrated with the same merits% !his 5adith is not Sahih 5adith% Ibn ;ahi3a3s 5adith has been made 7aeef and due to this in numerous other places it
has been regarded as 7aeef +weak chain of transmission,% It is towards this which we are being pointed here% <es it is clear according to me that the
5adith if ibn ;ahi3a is not less meritorious than a 5assan narration and /unaawi has stated this narration in !a#seer as being 5assan% !hus if with
raising the hand etc% the words of salaam were also mentioned then it would ha$e been regarded as salaam% !irmizi narrated a 5adith% 5e sa#s that
Suwaid narrated a 5adith to me% 'rom him Abdullah ibn /ubaarak reported from him Abdul 5amid "ahraam% It is e$ident that he heard from Shahr
bin )hushab he sa#s that he heard Asma bint #azeed narrate this 5adith that $eril# .asoolullah +Sall Allaho Alaihi Wa Sallam, one da# passed b# the
/us4id and a group of females were seated there% 5e +Sall Allaho Alaihi Wa Sallam, greeted them b# using his hand% Abdul 5ameed did so with his
hand +to show how it was done,% !his 5adith is regarded as 5assan% 5azrat Imam &awawi sa#s that this 5adith is applicable based on this that the
6rophet +Sall Allaho Alaihi Wa Sallam, combined both the use of the hand and words +of salaam, and the proof of this is the narration of Abu 7awood
and in this narration +of Abu 7awood, it has been mentioned that the# replied to the salaam of &abi +Sall Allaho Alaihi Wa Sallam,%
After presenting this narration Allama Ali 9aari has mentioned that there is no ob4ection e$en if the words of salaam were not present since it is not
necessar# according to sharia to sa# salaams +aloud, to females when passing b# them% As for the issue of the 6rophet +Sall Allaho Alaihi Wa Sallam,
making salaam then this is from amongst the uni:ue attributes of the 6rophet +Sall Allaho Alaihi Wa Sallam,% !hus he was blessed with the right to
either make salaam or not to make salaam or he could show a sign +b# use of the hand, or not +in other words it was as he pleased,% It must be also
noted that in some cases b# raising the hand does not necessaril# mean that one is intending salaam but it can be done as an action of humilit# as
well%
I +Aala 5azrat, sa# that the cru1 of all that has been mentioned is this that the salaam was not reall# fulfilled and there is no difference in their first
statement and in that which was mentioned afterwards e1cept that there has been an issue of the showing of a sign that was mentioned% In other
words the issue of humilit# being mentioned and the testimon# of 5azrat Asma +radi Allahu anha, that the 6rophet +Sall Allaho Alaihi Wa Sallam, that
the 6rophet +Sall Allaho Alaihi Wa Sallam, con$e#ed salaams% &ow if we do not accept that this was combined with $erbal salaam then one will ha$e
to accept that 4ust b# showing the sign is salaam and it is also a fact that 4ust b# making a sign is not regarded as salaam in the Sharia% It is thus
compulsor# to accept about what is mentioned abo$e in other words there was a combination of salaam and the sign +for the hand raising,% 6onder
upon it possibl# there is such a bearing in his statement that I am not able to understand it% And Almight# Allah has complete knowledge of all things%
