Riverside Police Arrest Bike Theft Suspect at RBHS
Video surveillance plays direct role in apprehension
On Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at 12:30 p.m., the Riverside Police Department received a call of a bike theft that had
occurred at the bike rack area in front of Riverside Brookfield High School on Ridgewood Road. When the officer
arrived, he met with the victim who said he had parked his bike in the rack at approximately 9:40 a.m. However, it
was not locked. When he came out just after 12:00 noon, the bike was gone and he reported the theft to the high
school staff.
The bike that was taken was a BMX Diamondback bicycle. Riverside Police, working with Riverside Brookfield
High School staff, were able to review outside video surveillance camera footage and were able to find a suspect
who had taken the bike at approximately 11:35 a.m. Both Riverside Brookfield High School staff personnel and
Riverside Police were able to I.D. the suspect from the video surveillance as they had a prior contact with the
offender.
With this information, Riverside detectives went over to the last known address of the suspect and recovered the
bike in the rear yard of the offender's home and took the offender into custody at that time.
Through investigation it was learned that the offender was in a summer school class that day but sometime
between 11:00 and 11:30 a.m. was sent home because of a discipline-related problem that had occurred in class.
When he exited the doors on Ridgewood Road, he stole the bike and went to his residence in Brookfield.
Riverside Police charged Miztli Reyes, 19 of the 9100 block of Fairview in Brookfield with one count of
theft.
Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel stated, This is the second bike theft arrest in as many days. This arrest
was a direct result of the outside video surveillance cameras that are in place at Riverside Brookfield High School.
Both police and RBHS staff personnel worked in conjunction together to obtain the video and identify the suspect.
This video surveillance equipment, which has a direct hookup to Riverside Police Department's 911 center, was
the key component to solving this case, recovering the stolen property and making an arrest.
