Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

In our everyday life, Mathematics is always beside us.Counting your change
when you ride on a jeepney, adding numbers because your teacher told you to do so
and other things which involves numbers and even letters.Numbers and letters that will
make your head explode and will make you burst into tears because its too hard to
understand.But no matter how much youve suffered and prayed for it to be gone, it
will never go away from you because its a part of your life.

Mathematics ? Others define it as a Mind Abuse To Human.As for Engineering
students, who said to be a math experts because most of their subjects are
mathematics, its a headache. They used to live with it but it doesnt mean they love it.
Not because most of their subjects are mathematics , they will look and say that this
thing is easy. And not because they are taking up ENGINEERING course, they can
master it that easy.

Almost half of the first year Engineering students unfortunately failed their
mathematics subject,Trigonometry to be specific. For every year or every batch has a
failing students in Trigonometry. In this research, we are ask to know the factors that
affect the Engineering students in failing mathematics subjects. To find the possible
reasons and solutions are the purpose of this research paper. To find out why and to
explain the side of the students.



Statement of the Problem.


The researchers seek to determine the factors that affects Engineering students
in failing mathematics subject. And also to find the answer for the following questions:

1.Why do many Engineering students tend to failed in their mathematics subjects?

2.What are the factors that affects the students in failing their mathematics subject?

3.What will be the significance or changes after conducting this research?

4.What will be the effect of this research to the students?Would it make any changes ?












Scope and Limitation of the Study.


In general, the focus of this study is directed in knowing the factors that affects
the engineering students in failing mathematics subject. About why do engineering
students failed and the possible reasons. About the students and to explain their sides.
This study is base on the answers of the involve students , how they will answer the
questions and if they are sincere on what they will say.


Significance of the Study.


In this study , the result is for the betterment and for the benefits of the
engineering students who happens to failed mathematics subjects. It is also for those
students who passed mathematics subjects . The result of this study can help students
to improve their academic performances and will help them to voice out their side.It can
also give some solutions. And for the researchers to understand the topic better.






Chapter 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
Mathematics is the study of numbers, quantities, or shapes.
We all know that mathematics is a difficult subject. But in my own opinion mathematics
is not hard if the students will give dome attention and time to study this subject. But
why some engineering students failed in this subject? Is mathematics is one of the
enemy of engineering students?
There are some reasons why many students of college of engineering failed in
mathematics subject. Like Mr. Rizalito Raguel said, we are not slow when it comes on
mathematics, he said that were only scared to do the right one, were not telling the
truth or the right answer in one question even if we know. These are the reasons why
we, the engineering students failed in mathematics subject. First we didnt like this
subject. They say that it is a problem, it can cause headache and it will turn you to be a
hot headed person. Second, mathematics is a difficult subject. Like us, engineering
students has a major and that is math so its hard ,yes its hard but if you try to study you
can learn. The third one, having no interests in this subject. Instead of practicing,
solving, studying and giving attention for this subject to know how to learn and pass this
subject you choose some gimiks and online games to forget mathematics.
Fourth reason is being lazy or the "laziness" of the students, some of us and some of
the students have many backgrounds and learning in math but still they failed in this
subject, its all because of the attitude of the students for being lazy they didnt like to
study. Fifth mathematics is a challenge. Math is a challenge, a challenge that some
students didnt like to face and didnt want to solve , they only depend on their
seatmates answers. Base on my opinion this are the reasons why do students failed in
terms of mathematics . MATHEMATICS IS A TWIN IS A TWIN OF YOUR OWN.
Mathematics subject was the most difficult subject that you must
encounter. The numbers, variables and even figure. Failure in mathematics consider the
poor performance of the students .Increasing knowledge in mathematics of the future
engineers can be emphasized. Mathematics is taught at alllevels of
education.Mathematics education requires highly motivated student because it requires
reasoning, making interpretations and solving problem, mathematical issues and
concepts .Many students failled because of the different factors.These factors are:*lack
of sel confidence *lack of review *Difficult in analyzing the problem *not motivated *poor
performance of students *getting nervous in time of exam that result to mental block
*not listening in the discussion.
Bad experience with mathematics are the main reason why students don't
like math and can explain theyre negative attitude about learning math (German Tanoh
Ph.D) It says that through a trauma of student in math from the past can effect the
present. Due to it, the students are not paying attention on it. Even worst is they've just
wanted to fail it and not do the risk of solving the math problem. According to Maxwell,
Jenny, the six reasons for failing mathematics are discussed: teachers, slow learners,
absence and lack of individualized teaching, fear, assumptions, and attitudes. It states
that the teachers or how they deliver it to the students is one of the reason. And if the
professor/teacher is strict the student having a pressure to deal with it. And also being
lack of interest of a student to the subject.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Mathematics is believed to be the key for all other subjects but it is surprising that most
students fail and yet pass other subject. I believe there is no work that you can do
without applying mathematics. We use Mathematics for our daily lives. Students only
fail when it comes to Mathematics just because of the following reasons;

1.Negative attitude towards Mathematics.

2. Fear due to pressure from friends that Mathematics is hard.

3. Failure of the teachers to give proper and simple explanation of Mathematical terms.

4. Limited or even lack of learning materials by the students.











Theoretical Framework

A different systematic approach to mathematics education research has been the work
of the Models and Modeling Group. The emerging perspective of researchers in the
domain of models and modeling suggests that when researchers are trying trying to
understand how people engage in real world problem solving, they are in a sense
looking at complex systems. There are three kinds of complex system

(a) Real life system or Simulation of such systems that occur (or are created) in
every situations.

(b) Conceptual systems that humans develop in order to design, model, or make
sense of preceding real life system.


(c) Models that researchers develop to describe and explain students modeling
abilities.

These three types of systems correspond to numerous reasons why the study of
complex systems should be specially productive for researchers who are attempting
to advance theory development in the learning Sciences.

Definision of Terms.

Mathematics-is the abstract study of topics such as quantity, structure, space, and
change.

Trauma-is an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, rape or natural
disaster. Immediately after the event, shock and denial are typical.

Assumptions-is something that you assume to be the case, even without proof.

Lack of individualized teaching-lack interest or motivation.

Pressure- the action of pressing or pushing against something

Attitudes-refer to the distinct concept of mood

Variables-a symbol that represents a quantity in a mathematical expression, as used in
many sciences

Taught- to impart knowledge of or skill in; give instruction in:

Peer Group- is both a social group and a primary group of people who, through
homophily, share similarities such as age, background, and social status.


Chapter 3
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

In this chapter we are to present the research design, setting of the study,
subjects of the study , research instrument, the procedure and statistical treatment of
the study.



Research Design.

Descriptive Design. This design helps provide answers to the question what,
when, where, who and how associated in the research problem.This design was
utilized in the study.

In this method the subject is observed naturally and without changing the natural
environment. It can also be a useful tool in developing a more focused study.







Setting of the Study.

The will be conducted at Laguna State Polytechnic University, Santa Cruz Main
Campus, Sta.Cruz ,Laguna. LSPU-SCC was establish on 1957 under Republic Act No
1794 sponsored by the late Congressman Wenceslao Rancap Lagumbay.

This study will be conducted specifically on College Of Engineering.
Mrs.Revelina C. Ansay as the Dean of the college.

LSPU was first called LSPC or Laguna State Polytechnic College. LSPC became
LSPU through Republic Act No.9402 An act converting the LSPC in the Province of
Laguna into a State University, to be known as the Laguna State Polytechnic University
or LSPU, and appropriating funds therefor during the 13
th
Congress. It was the result of
struggle in Copngress thru House Bill No. 5953 and Senate Bill No.293 when it received
the certificate of urgency signed by Her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Thus , on February 8, 2007 , Republic Act No. 9402was approved in Congress . It was
signed into law by Her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on March 22,
2007.

By operation of the law , Dr. Ricardo A. Wagan received a new mandate as the
first University President and LSPU-Sta.Cruz Campus in Barangay Bubukal, Sta.Cruz,
Laguna becomes the main campus.



Subject of the Study.

The subject of the study are the engineering students who failed and passed
their mathematics subjects. Engineering students from first year to fifth year who have
an experience regarding the topic and who have theory and statement about it.

Source of Data.

The data was gathered using questionnaire as the main instrument having three
questions about the topic. We also conduct some surveys regarding our study.
Researchers ask some engineering students about their opinions and used it as a data.

Procedure of the Study.

The researchers presented a list of topics that can be use in the study to the
English Professor . After the choosing and approving of the topic and the problem, the
researchers move on on to chapters. In each chapters , the researchers are about to
submit one chapter every week. In every week, one chapter must be presented and to
be checked by the English Professor.

A.Conduct of the Study.

The researchers will conduct the study after the professor announce it.
The things to be used must prepare first and then rthe researchers can conduct the
study. Researchers will give questionnaire to the engineering students as part of
gathering data. The data to be gathered will be use on the following chapters. The data
will be submitted to the professor for the comments, suggestions and checking.

B.Conduct of the Study.

The researchers will asked for the approval of the Professor in conducting
the study. After having approved to conduct a study, giving questionnaires and some
surveys to the engineering students is next. Questionnaire for each yearsand surveys
result will be recorded. Factors, reasons and points of views of each students will be
observed and to be discuss and explain briefly by the researchers.















Chapter 4
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents the results and discussions about the data gathered.

Result and Discussion.

Mathematics is very important in our daily lives. It gives us an idea on how to

compute something. But some of us really hate Mathematics just because of some

confusing formulas needed to memorize. Here some of the students that we had

interviewed:


*KarissaAbaquin - It is hard because theres a lot of formula you need to

and sometimes it depends to your professor the way they teach. And even I will do a

self study, I really dont understand.


*Meruvin Babes A. Vergara - Mathematics hate me and I also hate math. Its a tie.

*Roxan S. Sinagan - I hate memorizing formula and difficult to understand some of it. Its
better to know only the basic computation like addition and subtraction etc.

*Louther V. Mico - Because I do not really like Math since birth.

*Ma. Colline S. Almontero - Sometimes I cant remember some of the formulas.

*Jolina Rose Rina - Sometimes, I was pressured to compute a very long computation.I
do mistakes when it comes in substituting. I admit that I am careless in computing
solving.

*KizzieBabaan - I dont really like Math, it gives me a headache. I think some of lesson
could never apply to my life.

*Everly C. Lope - There are lessons that is really hard to understand to the point that my
brain cannot handle it.

* Mary Zener M. Juangco - I can say that Math is easy if it is your passion and likes.

*Charina G. Cas - Lazy manner while reviewing because of a very long computation.
And sometimes my professor do not have a teaching techniques. Math is easy to those
people who really like it. The hardest part when it comes to Math is memorizing a
confusing formula.

*Sabrina JoiRecario - Due to lack of attention in studying Mathematics. It really makes
me more lazy.

*Shelene Molina - Just because I dont have an interest in Math. I am contented with the
basic signs.

* Eloisa Francisco - Messy and difficult in a way that many formulas needed to
memorize, confusing but I accept that Math is not for me.


We can see the biggest problem when it comes to the subject Mathematics. Most of the
students dislike Math, they say that Math is hard and difficult subject, a sign of danger
but it feels great when we solved hard one. Just used to enjoy it and if you enjoy
yourself then you will be able to learn it quickly.


Chapter 5
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS


Findings.

The researchers find out that the factors affecting engineering
students in failing mathamatics subjects are; the professors, memorization, peer
groups and self esteem.

Students also bare in their minds that mathematics is a very hard
subject, and it is one reason why they are hate it. Theya bare in their mind that
problems regarding mathematics are hard to understand so they wont try anymore
to solve. It leads failing in mathematics subjects.

Recommendation.

The researchers recommend engineering students to practice
solving mathematical questions. Engineering students should look mathematics on a
lighter side in order for them not to hate it. The researchers recommend also
students to have same advance lessons and dont have fear on their professors.




Conclusion.

The researchers can conclude that students are failing their
mathematics subject because of some factors; the professors; formulas to be
memorize, peer groups and self esteem. The researcher therefore conclude that
those factors can affect a lot the engineering students in thinking and they also lose
confidence because of that factors.
