Case Study 11: Green Technology Center at Cape Cod
Community College
The Lyndon P. Lorusso Applied Technology
Building located at Cape Cod Community
College is the frst state government LEED
certifed building in assachusetts. Completed
in !eptember "##$% the technology center cost
&' million to construct and is the frst ne(
building on campus since )*+,. -n "##,% the
pro.ect earned the DCA Programming !tudy
A(ard.
The /acility has numerous cutting0edge
sustainable design /eatures that conserve
resources. !ite design% daylighting% rene(able
energy usage% (ater conservation% and recycled
materials have been included in the
development% resulting in a LEED Gold
certifcation. 1hile these green /eatures in and
around the building cost about +2 more than
conventional construction
techni3ues% the cost is estimated
to be recouped (ithin /our or fve
years.
The site /or the technology
center (as chosen because it
ta4es advantage o/ underutili5ed
par4ing areas at the commuter0
oriented school. By choosing this
location% the school eliminated the need /or ne( par4ing lots. Cape Cod
Community College also signed a (ritten commitment to preserve the
ad.acent open space around the building.
To ma6imi5e sunlight e6posure% the building is designed on an east0(est a6is
to allo( daylight to penetrate through large (indo(s. Additionally% daylight
and occupancy sensors are placed throughout the building to control the
amount o/ light the f6tures can emit. 7tili5ing daylighting enhances the
environment o/ interior spaces (hile lessening energy consumption.

Technology Building>s po(er needs.
Combined (ith daylighting% the solar
collectors result in a building that uses ?=2
less energy than a conventional /acility. Also%
)##2 o/ the additional po(er the school
needs to purchase /or the building (ill come
/rom a rene(able energy source /or at least
t(o years.
A variety o/ measures are employed both
inside and outside o/ the /acility to promote
(ater conservation. Located in the
basement o/ the building is an '%### gallon
tan4 that collects rain(ater to be used in
toilets% (hich reduces ground(ater usage by
$#2. 1hen combined (ith a (ater collection and reuse irrigation system%
drought0resistant plant species in the landscaping% lo(09o( toilets and
f6tures% and (aterless urinals%
