Cooper from Darley visited the library during the school holidays and inspected the sporting equipment that can be hired.
Photo Helen Tatchell

Moorabool Shire residents can experience more than just

literature at their local library, with sporting equipment
available for hire at the Lerderderg facility.
Just like any other item on the shelf; cricket sets, basketballs,
skipping ropes and tennis racquets can be borrowed from
the Library for up to four weeks.
Library officer, Jeremiah Sloane said the equipment is great
for those who dont own, or cant afford sporting equipment
of their own.
Tennis racquets and cricket sets can be quite expensive, so
its great for families and friends to hire them instead.
The equipment has been available since the opening of the
library, and has slowly accumulated over time. We have
bought some extra gear in recently, including some really
good quality tennis racquets, Mr Sloane said. Its a lot more
popular in summer, however we have just moved it into the
middle of the library so more people who come realise it is
here.
Mr Sloane said that although people dont normally associate
libraries with sport, they now could.
One of our library officers, Ray, brings the school kids in
for story telling and they talk about what they can hire
you know the books and the DVDs, but when the kids find
out they can hire the sports equipment it creates such an
excitement.
The Lerderderg Library is located at 215 Main Street,
Bacchus Marsh. For more information on the equipment hire,
call 5367 2533.

Big effort by the

Whittle man

By Jessica Howard
Ash Whittle celebrated his
200th senior club game on
Saturday in the Reserves,
contributing one goal to Bacchus Marshs 42-point win
over Darley, played at Maddingley Park.
Whittle commenced his
playing career with the Bacchus Marsh Football Club
in 1998 as a junior, and has
since been a regular player

in both the seniors and

reserves.
I like being able to say that
I am a one club player, he
said. The club has obviously gone through some tough
times over the years, and it
is a really great honour to
have played for the one club
in that time. I have really enjoyed my time here.
Whittle started his playing
career in the back line, however has spent the last ten

years up forward.
Club President, Pat Mullen
said after numerous injuries,
200 games is a real tribute to
Whittles character.
After the number of games
he has missed through injury, and still being able to
make it to 200, you can really see Ashs perseverance
within the game, he said.
Whittle said the best thing
about being part of the Bacchus Marsh Football and

Netball Club would have

to be the great family aspect.Everyone is just great
to be around, and everyone
in the family can always
be really involved and that
makes it really enjoyable,
he said.
With a successful season
in the reserves so far this
year, and finals a possibility,
Whittle said he could only
hope for a premiership win
in the future.

May peace be
with them

Sadness, disbelief and devastation is on the doorstep of

Moorabool.

An Eynesbury family of
five were unfortunately on
the Malaysian Airlines flight
MH17, that was destroyed
mid air over Ukraine last
Friday. Their three children
attended Bacchus Marsh
Grammar.

Hans van den Hende, his

wife, Shaliza Dewa, were
killed in the crash along with
their sons Piers (15), Marnix
(12) and daughter Margaux
(8). All were travelling on
Dutch/Malaysian passports
but were permanent Australian residents.
School Principal Andrew
Neal has written, with much

sadness, to parents within

the school community.

At times like this it is easy

to concentrate on the senseless nature of the actions
that have taken the lives of
a peaceful, loving and hardworking family. I would ask
we instead try to look at
the positive things that the
family brought to our com-

munity and lives and to concentrate in our grief on how

we have all benefited by the
many acts of this family, that
have made our community a
better one, he said.

The school has put in place

a range of additional support mechanisms to ensure
children, staff and families
are comforted in their grief.

THE Bacchus Marsh Little

Athletics Club has jumped
61 places to become the 22nd
ranked club in Victoria after
winning the Most Improved
Centre at an awards ceremony on July 12.
Club
president
Maria
Downes said the award,
which was handed out at a
Little Athletics Victoria ceremony at Lakeside Stadium,
Albert Park, was completely
unexpected.
Its come on the back of our
club winning the Benalla

Cross Country Open Day

perpetual trophy over the
Queens Birthday weekend
for the tenth year in a row,
Mrs Downes said.
We sent 35 athletes to the
event and came away with
eight gold, seven silver and
two bronze medals.
She said the Bacchus Marsh
club was now ranked 22 out
of 104 little athletics clubs
across Victoria.
Its a great achievement
considering were on a grass

track and up against a lot

of clubs with rebound ace
tracks. Were hoping to break
into the top ten next year so
that we can be eligible for a
cash award, she said.
She said the Bacchus Marsh
Little Athletics Club had
281 members ranging in age
from five to 16 and catered
for all track and field events
including jumping, throwing, hurdles, sprint and long
distance.
She said the activities suited
all sorts of fitness levels and

body types and the idea was

to promote personal bests,
not compare the kids to each
other.
The club is all about the
kids as far as Im concerned,
she said.
Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics is taking new registrations on September 19 and
20 and the new season will
commence on October 4.

Speak up and stop violence

MOORABOOL Shire mayor
Paul Tatchell says its a profound honour to be one of
five White Ribbon ambassadors for the Moorabool
region.
Cr Tatchell said the White
Ribbon campaign to stop
violence against women had
been running in Moorabool
since 2010 and this year a
Moorabool White Ribbon
Day Committee had formed.
A modest target has been
set to increase ambassador

representation by five each

year. Part of the role is to
source like-minded men
determined to work in prevention of violence against
women to join the movement in eradicating the often
hidden torment of family
violence, Cr Tatchell said.
White Ribbon Ambassadors
are the leaders and faces
of the Campaign: men and
boys who incorporate White
Ribbon values into their
daily lives. Any man can be

a White Ribbon Ambassador

and use their influence to affect change within their social and professional circles
and beyond.
Its up to all of us as a
community to be one voice
in condemning the inhumanity of violence against
women, and supporting
those affected with a united
approach. This is not just
about stamping out physical violence; its any violence
whether it be physiological,

emotional or otherwise, Cr
Tatchell said.
The knock-on effects of
violent behaviour leave deep
and emotional scarring that
is not always visible. The
bruises may heal but the
wounds often lie open.
Any woman experiencing violence in Moorabool
should contact Child and
Family Services on 5367 9900
for assistance and report it to
the police on 5366 4500.

ON 27 JULY, NEW
TIMETABLES
WILL ARRIVE.

Nationals candidate for the seat of Buninyong Sonia Smith wants to help businesses cut
red tape. Photo - submitted

Plans to reduce red tape

From Sunday, 27 July, a statewide public transport timetable

change will deliver almost 4000 extra train, tram and bus services
every week.
What does this mean for you?

A new timetable on the Cranbourne/Pakenham lines will

boost the frequency of train services. The Frankston line
will have more services in the morning peak.
More than 130 bus routes across Victoria will have new
timetables to better connect with trains, boost frequencies
and to extend bus services to new areas.
The tram network will be reshaped with a new Route 12
and some route changes to simplify the network, add
extra services and boost capacity in fast-growing areas
of the inner city.
All V/Line train lines will have new timetables, with some trains
departing earlier or later, and some changes to journey times.
These improvements are another step in transforming your network,
with more services where they are needed most.
Visit ptv.vic.gov.au to plan your journey.

Nationals Candidate for

Buninyong Sonia Smith
is issuing a Red Tape
challenge to help small
operators that often dont
have time or resources.
Red tape is one of the
major barriers to businesses
getting ahead, Ms Smith
said.
Its a scourge and reduces
the ability of businesses to
focus on employing new
people, to grow and to make
profits. Getting rid of red
tape is a priority for me.
She has invited businesses
in the Buninyong electorate
to come forward with
examples of unnecessary red
tape that needs to be cut.
Last week Russell Northe,
Nationals MP and the

Minister for Small Business

came to the electorate.
The Minister along with
myself dropped in to local
businesses and chatted with
people about their needs.
Many of these businesses
shared their stories of being
caught up in red tape sometimes for years.
She said since last weeks
visit she had followed up on
these cases and some were
able to be resolved within 24
hours.
We should not have red
tape at all and I am using my
campaign to push for getting
rid of as much unnecessary
regulation as possible. If
elected in November, getting
rid of red tape will continue
to be a priority for me, Ms
Smith said.

I invite people get in touch

if they are experiencing red
tape in their business.
I will directly take up their
cause and, if necessary, with
the relevant minister and the
Red Tape Commissioner. No
bit of red tape is too big or
too small.
In fact often the tiny
things are the worst ones
and stymie people getting
ahead.
Ms Smith launched her Red
Tape Challenge at the Ballan
and District Chamber of
Commerce last Tuesday.

also has a current online
deregulation
resource
site in place. Go to www.

Nurse on duty
Bacchus Marsh and district
continues to benefit from
the service of a dedicated
McGrath Breast Care Nurse
thanks to funding from the
McGrath Foundation.
Based at Bacchus Marsh
Community Health Centre,
McGrath Breast Care Nurse
Sue Bartlett provides invaluable physical, psychological
and emotional support to
local families experiencing
breast cancer.
Ms Bartlett said she was
delighted to work in the role
in the wider Bacchus Marsh
community and believed
she was able to contribute
positively to her local community, providing support
to women and men experi-

encing breast cancer.

She has been a nurse for 12
years, with significant experience in specialist breast
care nursing.
I am delighted to be able
to continue to care for people affected by breast cancer
with the generous support
of the McGrath Foundation.
With many years experience
in the area of breast cancer
nursing, I am aware of the
impact a diagnosis of breast
cancer can have on both the
person affected and their
family, not only physically
but emotionally, Ms Bartlett
said.
Co-founded by Jane and
Glenn McGrath after Janes

initial recovery from breast

cancer, the McGrath Foundation aims to raise muchneeded funds to place
McGrath Breast Care Nurses
in communities right across
Australia, whilst increasing
breast awareness in younger
women.
Families in Bacchus Marsh
and surrounding communities can self-refer to this free
service by contacting Ms
Bartlett on 5320 6700 or 0478
308 425.
It costs about $380,000 to
place a McGrath Breast Care
Nurse in the community for
a three-year period. To make

Fun and games continue

Moorabool Shire Council is

developing a new Municipal

the period 2014 to 2017 and
wants your input.
The plan will provide a future vision and strategic direction for the development,
enhancement, co-ordination
and planning of early years
services for children aged
from birth to 12 years.
Moorabool Shire mayor
Paul Tatchell said there
was irrefutable evidence
that investment in the first
eight years of life improved
a childs health and educational prospects.
This leads to improved
social, human and economic
capital outcomes for the
community, Cr Tatchell
said.
The MEYP will engage the
local community to agree

to ensure the plan reflects
the needs and priorities of
the whole shire, we want to
hear from all members of the
community including children, parents, and service
providers about what you
think is important and what
should be included in the
new plan.
Two separate surveys will
be available to complete online: one for parent/carers
and one for service providers. To complete the survey

Ms Mort was elected alongside other committee members at a community meeting

New routes, buses

and services

BACCHUS Marsh residents will have the chance

to discuss new bus routes,
timetables and preview new
state-of-the art buses for
their town at community
information sessions today
and tomorrow.
Bacchus Marsh Coaches
general manager Dave Nickels said commencing Sunday bus frequency would
triple, buses would run 365
days a year and three new
world class buses would
hit the local roads.
Bus services in Bacchus
Marsh havent increased
since 1986. Public Transport
Victoria (PTV) has chosen us
(Bacchus Marsh) and Warrnambool as the only two
places in Victoria to get upgrades. Its a great thing for
the town, Mr Nickels said.
We worked with the State
Government very closely

to get this service. Theyve

given us the budget to buy
new buses.
He said community information sessions held today
and tomorrow were an
opportunity for people to

Overseas success
Ronan Keleher competed in the Australian Tae Kwon Do Team in Korea over the school
holiday break. Ronan, a Bacchus Marsh Grammar student, won a bronze medal fighting
against Russia. He had a great experience in Korea and was able to train with the Korean
World Cup team in Jeonju. Ronan will now compete in the Victorian championships in two
weeks time.

A divot in
reserve plans
THE Bacchus Marsh West
Golf Club stands to lose at
least two holes and its clubhouse if preliminary plans
by Moorabool Shire Council
are given the go ahead.
The plans detail two new
recreational ovals and a new
shared-use clubhouse where
holes 2, 3, 15 and 16 are located on the corner of McCormack and Bacchus Marsh
Balliang roads. If the plans
go ahead, two of the holes
will be shortened and another two will be relocated
south to the Racecourse
Recreational Reserves pony
club course.
The new clubhouse is expected to be shared with
other sporting clubs.

Bacchus Marsh West Golf

Club president Dean Cowan
said the plans were still a
work in progress and said
weve got to put in place a
plan that suits everybody.

Golf club member and

Moorabool Shire councillor David Edwards said:
Council is continuing to
work with all user groups of

the Racecourse Recreational

Reserve Committee (RRRC)
so we can deliver good outcomes for all the community, including existing user
groups, which will enable us
to start to deliver some much
needed infrastructure for
Bacchus Marsh.

Council is exploring all the

options because we have a
significant shortfall of recreational facilities in Bacchus
Marsh. Our cricket clubs are
playing away because we
dont have the grounds for
them to use, Cr Edwards
said.
The user groups of the
Racecourse
Recreational
Reserve Committee have
showed good faith in their
willingness to work with
council.

He said the golf club and

the RRRC were all under the
one title but back in 2012 the
previous council separated
the management responsibilities of the RRRC and the
golf club.
The preliminary plans were
developed in response to the

two new Stonehill and Essence developments north of

McCormack Road and incorporate a new primary school
and supermarket.

The
perfect
outcome
would be to end up with
ovals right next to the school
but it might not be viable,
Cr Edwards said.
Developers have to provide a certain amount of
open space in new developments, but they dont
provide enough to build all
these new facilities needed.

The State Government

needs to come to the party
and fund infrastructure
shortfalls if Bacchus Marsh
continues to grow. Under
Plan Melbourne theyve
identified Bacchus Marsh
and Ballan as growth areas
but have provided no funding for this growth. Wheres
the additional facilities and
infrastructure needed for
the coming growth?
Cr Edwards said the plans
werent ready to go before
council for a decision.

French connections

A group of teenage French

school students, their mentor, and a film crew will visit
Bacchus Marsh to research
and film a documentary
about The Lost Diggers of
Vignacourt.
In Vignacourt, France, these
students have dedicated
time to the Maison des Australiens, a museum honouring Australians fighting in

that area of France during

WW1. Recently discovered
photographic
negatives
of Allied soldiers passing
through the town of Vignacourt, near the front lines,
has provided an extraordinary insight into the lives
and images of hundreds of
young Australians fighting
in WW1. It has been estimated that two-thirds of the

Australians photographed
would subsequently be injured or killed.
These extraordinary, long
lost images have been labelled The Lost Diggers of
Vignacourt. Now the students are visiting locations
in Australia, including the

Australian War Memorial

in Canberra and Bacchus
Marsh, to research the stories of some of those lost
diggers photographed and
eventually commemorated
in France.
On July 25 the students will
arrive in Bacchus Marsh to

talk to descendants of some

of those lost diggers. Faye
Threlfall will talk about her
grandfather, Walter Spencer.
Sgt E.J. Morley, who is to this
day still lost, is commemorated on the Bacchus Marsh
Avenue of Honour, a key focus of the visit.

Cobra re signs
By Jessica Howard
Senior playing coach for
the Bacchus Marsh Football
Club Cameron Richardson,
has signed on for another
two years with the club.
The ex-North Melbourne
player was appointed as the
Cobras coach for the 2014
season in October 2013, and
is the clubs first playing
coach since the early 2000s.
Richardson said the transition from being a player at a
high level to coaching was
overall an enjoyable experience. Its been a really big
learning curve for me, he
said.
I really enjoyed learning
the ins and outs of footy at
North Melbourne, you learn
a great deal at that level
and I feel like I was one of
the guys that picked up on
things pretty quick and understood why we did things
a certain way.
There has been a lot more
to learn than I originally
thought. Out on the field
theres a lot more pressure,
rather than worrying about
your game and doing what

you can for the team as a

player, I get a lot more nervous watching the team and
hoping things go right, he
said.
Richardson said his favourite part about coaching is seeing the team take
on something he has said,
in order to improve their
game. As time goes on, and
I improve as a coach, this
will hopefully happen more
frequently and in the future,
benefit the team as a whole.
Bacchus Marsh captain, Tyson Shea said Cameron resigning is fantastic news for
the club. The knowledge of
the game and the professionalism he brings from playing
AFL has been great for the
playing group, he said.
I think another two years
learning and developing the
game plan and structures
will hopefully see us playing deep into finals. He is
the best player I have ever
played alongside and all
the players are really looking forward to the next two
years.
Richardson said being part
of the club has been a fan-

tastic experience so far. I

am so lucky to have come
to such a great place with so
many good characters, and I
hope that over my coaching
period I can ensure that it
stays that way.
Obviously I am judged on
my results, but ultimately
over the next two seasons I
want to see the boys improve
as football players, and the
team improve as a whole.
Club President, Pat Mullen
said the club was more than
happy to put an offer of two
years on the table.
Cam has brought a new
style of play to the club and
we are happy with the progress so far. We understand
that it takes time for players
to adjust to a new style however we are confident with
him as a coach, and a player,
and look forward to the next
two seasons, he said.
Bacchus Marsh are currently placed outside of the Ballarat Football Leagues top
six, but are hoping that with
a strong finish to the season
they can see themselves
playing in the finals.

coach Cam Richardson who has just re signed with the club for a further two years.

How long is a piece of string?

Bid to get town mobile coverage

TOM

Hello, Hello - Cr Paul Tatchell and The Blackwood Merchant owner Jen Moore believe the only way to communicate in
the area, which lacks mobile phone coverage, is with the old tin can and a piece of string! Photo - submitted

Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell has ramped up Councils

bid to secure funding for
Blackwood to improve mobile
phone coverage.
Last week Cr Tatchell joined
The Blackwood Merchant
owner Jen Moore to urge state
and federal governments to
include Blackwood among the
towns to receive funding from
the State Governments $40
million Regional Connectivity
Program and the Commonwealths $100 million Mobile
Coverage Program.
From a business point of
view, we cannot get reliable
mobile reception in the cafe,
which is frustrating for us and
for customers. But there is the
bigger problem of how dangerous a lack of coverage is if
there was an emergency in the
town, Mrs Moore said.
With Blackwood identified
by the Victorian Bushfire
Royal Commission as one
of 52 towns across Victoria
at high fire risk, mobile coverage blackspots could be
catastrophic.
We have a new fire refuge
in town, fully-equipped and
state-of-the-art, but if Blackwood residents and visitors
cant receive a warning on
their mobile phone of fire
danger or cannot contact lost
ones in an emergency, we are
not doing all we can to ensure
peoples safety, Cr Tatchell
said.
We might as well have tin

Environmental Opinion

cans and a piece of string for

all the good a mobile phone
does you up here. In a beautiful town that attracts many
tourists, as well as a permanent population of about 300
people, this is simply not good
enough and I implore both
federal and state government
to take this golden opportunity to fix this problem.
Earlier this year, Cr Tatchell
encouraged Moorabool residents to make a submission
to the $100 Million Federal
Government Mobile Coverage
Program. Blackwood residents
should know in August if the
town was included in the list
of locations given to telecommunications providers by the
Federal Government as part
of the tender process for the
program.
Cr Tatchell said people could
lobby their local state and federal MPs and candidates to explain the importance of funding to improve mobile phone
access in Blackwood.
We have spoken to many
stakeholders, agencies, politicians and candidates at all
levels of government and they
say they understand the urgency of getting mobile coverage to places like Blackwood,
so the lobbying by council and
the community is starting to
take effect, he said.
We must continue to advocate for funding and be proactive rather than reactive to
this dire need.

with Tom Kingston

Questions hang over the heads of those in charge

So the sad news that was
heading our way has finally
arrived and it seems Al Gore
was sold a pup (excuse the
pun or irony). We have an
outspoken Senator here in
Burnie who accuses the
coalition government of deserting Tasmania who then
goes and votes down the
Carbon Tax which will take
$90,000,000 from Tasmania.
While it is good to see the
Palmer United Party (with
a motor person attached)
will likely stand by the other
federal government bodies that are attempting to
tackle climate change they
have taken away Australias
meagre attempt at a carbon
tax. Here is hoping that the
Palmer United Party will
stand by the TV chat with Al
Gore we can only hope. But
lets not forget that the leader

of this party is a coal baron.

In light of the Palmer

United Partys decision not
to support the federal governments demolition of the
Renewable Energy Target
let us take a closer look at
the men and women who
are currently reviewing the
RET. It seems the practice
these days for the incoming
government, if it has been
in opposition prior to taking
charge, is to appoint many
review committees for many
different groups and panels
that the previous government has established. The
aim of these reviews ought
to be, it seems to me, to clearly and without prejudice
examine how these various
bodies are going. So let us
take a close look at the people who were employed, at
some expense to us the tax-

payers, by the current federal government to review the

Renewable Energy Target.
The current federal government appointed Mr Dick
Warburton, a self-confessed
climate change denier, to
lead the review of the RET.
He was joined by Dr Brian
Fisher who, it appears, is a
long-standing consultant to
major fossil fuel emitters. In
its submission to the review,
the petroleum industry used
Dr Fishers paid work from
2012 to call for RET to be
abolished. The Independent
Climate Change Authority review, completed just 17
months ago and headed by
Mr Bernie Fraser and including Ms Heather Ridout, rejected Dr Fishers modeling
and conclusions.
Now Dr Fisher is judging the merits of his own

argument.

Another review member,

Ms Shirley Int Veld, is a
former head of WAs biggest
coal generator, Verve Energy.
Ms Int Veld gave evidence to
a Senate Committee in 2011
that she did not think that
carbon dioxide was a pollutant. Here is a part of the Senate Committees discussion:
Ms Int Veld: Yes, we emit
8.1 million tonnes of CO2.

Senator CAMERON: But

you are saying CO2 is not a
pollutant.
Ms Int Veld: I do not believe it is.

Senator CAMERON: That

is interesting. So all the
scientists who are worried
about that have got it wrong
and you have got it right. Is
that correct?
Ms Int Veld: No. I am say-

ing that what the scientists

are saying is that it may lead
to a change in climate, but
that does not correlate with
it being a pollution. We are
all breathing it out here in
this room.
Then there was ACIL Allen
which was appointed by the
Review to supply modeling
work for the review. ACIL
Allen told a public RET
Modeling meeting that they
would not be modeling the
positive impacts of the RET,
because it was too hard to
model. Further they said
they would not be doing
sensitivity modeling of any
possible price on pollution
out to 2030 because the
government will be abolishing the carbon tax.
The second claim is based
on the notion that no government will introduce any

price on pollution out to

2030 at any level the President Obama announcement
recently and Chinas national carbon pricing policy
from 2016 show how ridiculous and untenable is that
position.
So to sum up, this review,
stacked by opponents of all
descriptions, is to focus only
on costs and not on benefits.
Does this federal government really believe that
those of us concerned about
climate change are just going to sit back and take this
immoral and just plain corrupt behavior?
What is your opinion?

Focus on
improving
farm safety
This week is National Farm
Safety Week and Safe Work
Australias Acting Chief
Executive Officer Michelle
Baxter is urging Moorabool
farmers to focus on improving farm safety.
In 2013 there were 37 deaths
in the Agriculture industry,
with workers in this industry experiencing a fatality
rate eight times higher than
the rate for all Australian
workers.
One of the themes of this
years National Farm Safety
Week is the safety of older
workers. Safe Work Australias report Work-related
injuries and fatalities on
Australian Farms found that
in the eight years to 2011, 30
per cent of fatalities on farms
were of workers aged 65
years and over.

From a health and safety

point of view, farms are
unique. Not only are they
a place of employment, but
they are also homes, often
with children coming into
the work environment, said
Ms Baxter.
The agriculture industry
has a higher than average
proportion of self-employed
workers, with farmers often working alone and
with fewer opportunities to
share practices, observe and
learn from others and often
at a distance from help or
first aid should an incident
occur.
Ms Baxter said National
Farm Safety Week is a timely
reminder to highlight the
importance for farmers
and the communities that
they live and work in to not

Letters to the Editor

Email: news@themooraboolnews.com.au

Dear Editor,
I wish to comment regarding the front page
article, Gold Rush in the
Moorabool News 15/7/14.
It is admirable that MEG
member Mrs Rose De La
Cruz has sprung to the
defence of those who live
in the communities of
Mt Egerton, Gordon and
surrounds. I had scant
knowledge of the impact
a gold mine exploration
would have on the area
where I also live until I accessed the website steadfastminingservices.com.
It is obvious the landscape
will be affected.
To quote Mrs De La
Cruzs words it is also
home to many people
who have chosen to live
here for its beauty, rural
landscapes, QUIET environment and high quality
of life in general.
These points are exactly
the same as I have put forward when I have questioned the wisdom of the
then State Labor Government granting a permit
for the building of the
Moorabool Wind Energy
Facility so close to the
townships of Ballan and
Mt Egerton and too close
to the dwellings of the
rural land holders living
adjacent to the turbines.
I remember very well
that in June 2010 at a
panel hearing in connection with the now approved Moorabool Wind
Energy Facility, Mrs De
La Cruz
passionately
pleaded the case for the
granting of a permit to
build the wind farm. She
completely disregarded
any objections from local residents protesting
for various reasons, one
of them being the impact
on the visual amenity, another being unacceptable
noise and shadow flicker.
She praised the concept
of wind power and described the turbines as
majestic. Beauty is in
the eye of the beholder
and if one is not going to
be impacted on by their
presence maybe they are
attractive to some people.
All this is history now
but it is interesting to see
that she is representing
herself as being an advocate for the locals whom
she ignored four years
ago.
If MEG had endeavoured to look at both sides

of the coin and pressed

for negotiation and compromise on behalf of the
adversely affected locals,
maybe we would not be
in the position of having
our lives impacted on so
badly. There was and still
is no option available to
those of us unfortunate
enough to be faced with
the prospect of living 1000
metres from 150 metre
high 3 MW turbines.
I reiterate, I am not
against the concept of
renewable energy and
agree with MEG in most
areas but would like to
see the members achieve
a balanced viewpoint, not
make the assumption that
those of us who ask for a
fair go are pro coal and
anti-wind.

Dear Editor,
Victoria
Walks
and
blindness advocates are
alarmed that VicRoads
new Cycling Road Rules
Survey
includes
options for more cyclists on
footpaths.
Walking and cycling are
not a good mix for our
most vulnerable walkers.
In a survey of 1128 seniors, 39 per cent said bikes
on shared paths were a
constraint to their walking. A Vision Australia
study of walkers with vision impairment found 24
per cent of collisions and
near collisions were with
cyclists.
Cyclists do not necessarily slow down when
they share a path with pedestrians. A NSW study
found that the average
speed of cyclists on footpaths was 21 km/h, the
same speed as on local
roads.
Cycling advocates want
to increase the age for
footpath cycling to 16
from the current 12 years.
Letting teenagers ride
on footpaths might make
some parents feel better,
but it wont make their
kids safer. International
studies show that cyclists
have a 1.8 to 16 times
higher risk of injury on
footpaths than on roads.
From a motorist perspective, imagine a 15 year old

racing along a footpath

while someone is backing out of their driveway.
What driver wants to be
responsible for a teenager
lying seriously injured on
a footpath?
Our footpaths are critical for many seniors,
children, families and the
disabled to get around.
It is paramount that people are safe and feel safe
when walking, without
having to worry about being hit by a cyclist.

Dear Editor,
Your columnist (Environmental Opinion MN 1
July) seems to be lost in the
midst of his own fantasies
of global warming and
politics. He ignores the
majority view of Australians that recently elected a
government which promised to address climate
change with a no regrets
suite of actions whilst focusing on re-establishing
our national balance sheet
to good health. We expect that this will allow
for more jobs, improved
standard of living, fixed
infrastructure blockages
and removing unnecessary red and green tape
from our lives.
Probably our government is paying attention
to such people as; Judith
Curry [Chair and Professor, School of Earth and
Atmospheric
Sciences,
Georgia Institute of Technology] in January this
year;
Evidence reported by
the IPCC AR5 weakens
the case for anthropogenic factors dominating
climate change in the 20th
and early 21st centuries.
(The) increase in confidence in the main conclusions in the AR5 SPM
seems
unwarranted
based on the text, figures
and analyses in the main
WG1 Report, and also in
comparison with the conclusions from the AR4.
Several key elements
of the report point to a
weakening of the case for
attributing the warming
to human influences:

WRITING LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Evidence of decreased

Evidence that sea level

the same magnitude as

Increasing Antarctic sea

Low confidence in

extreme

to
anthropogenic global
warming.
And Patrick Moore, a Canadian environmentalist
who helped found Greenpeace in the 1970s but
subsequently left in protest at its increasingly extreme, anti-scientific, anticapitalist stance, argues
that the green position on
climate change fails the
most basic principle of the
scientific method;
The certainty among
many scientists that humans are the main cause
of climate change, including global warming, is
not based on the replication of observable events.
It is based on just two
things, the theoretical effect of human-caused
greenhouse
emissions,
predominantly carbon dioxide, and the predictions
of computer models using
those theoretical calculations. There is no scientific
proof at all.

Dear Editor,
A pity the lady driver
in Grant Street the other
week didnt check her
side mirror before opening her drivers door and
having a truck smash into
it. Actually, I felt sorrier
for the truck driver; probably driving on his nerves
in that street waiting for
accidents such as this
to happen. Please take
care alighting in Grant
Street, also west end of
Main Street - both streets
constructed when the
busy town was a village.
Check your side mirrors.
I miss our old FJ Holden
with its bench front seat
and the non-inhibiting
gear change on the steer-

ing column. We all would

have just slid across to the
gutter side in the Grant
Street situations. I see
parents often outside the
library and schools letting kids out of cars on
the traffic side of the road.
I just hold my breath and
shake my head.
While Im on the gripes
too when using those
little cut throughs in the
lower car park at The
Village complex you are
facing a GIVE WAY, so
please do so.
Its still a great little town

Regional house prices have
risen to a new record median
of $327,000, representing a
solid 4.1 per-cent year-onyear growth.

Price: $359,000
Matthew Edwards 5331 1111

For units in regional Victoria, the median price

was $254,000, up 2 per cent
year-on-year.
The data, finalised this
week by the REIV for the
year to 30 June, provides a
counterbalance to news earlier this year of employment
changes in some areas of the
state, by major employers
such as Qantas and Alcoa.

Fluctuating
employment
levels can exert a cooling
effect on growth. However,
regional property prices are
being buoyed by continued
record low interest rates
which have been on hold for
the past 11 months.

Beyond low interest rates,

strength in the broader regional economy is being
driven by investment from
all levels of Government. Encouraging announcements,
tied to budgeted funding,
have provided a real confidence booster for the longterm outlook of regional
Victoria.

livelihood of major towns

Melburnians to move to
country Victoria and buy
into the local market.

Announcements such as a

$25 million investment, by

the State Government, on
the establishment of critical
infrastructure and services
in the Ballarat West Employment Zone. This project
alone is expected to create
thousands of jobs and generate major economic activity
in and around Ballarat.
Other projects in central
Victoria which have gained
Federal Government funding - include the redevelopment of the Bendigo Airport,
and the construction of the
$1.1 billion Bendigo Hospital, lifting the attraction of
the city.
A range of other work is underway which will improve
regional access to the surf
coast and the states west.
This is beneficial to those
planning to buy into regional towns near Melbourne
and commute to the city, or
even for those making a tree
or sea change and move fulltime to country Victoria.
Upgrades to regional roads
include $750 million in major projects along the Princes
Highway, and the $90 million connection of Geelong
Ring Road to the Surf Coast
Highway.
And, for those planning
to buy into the west of the
State, a $500 million duplication of the Western Highway
from Ballarat to Stawell will
greatly enhance liveability
in the mid-west of Victoria.
Substantial
investments
with a long term focus are
a sure encouragement that
regional Victoria will play
a large role in the continued growth of the Victorian
economy - and this will continue to underpin strength
in the regional property
sector.

you start is once again loaded into the computers RAM.

The Under 14.5s had another good win and they

In the middle Simon Dale

Blues let their guard down

Round 13 v Learmonth
FOOTBALL
Seniors
The Senior team came out
expecting a tough contest
against Learmonth and it
was exactly that. Learmonth
was tough and fast at the ball
all day. When Gordon were
able to get their running
game going they played well
but Learmonth were always
ready to attack. Jaymes Gorman contributed well as he
was able to score valuable
goals. Mick Nolan was efficient at getting in and under the ball, allowing the
forwards to kick through the
big sticks. The team now sits
fifth on the ladder, with a finals berth imminent.
Best - Gerard Clifford, Ash
Munari, Jason Rae, Mick Nolan, Matt Raworth and Mark
Gunnell.
Reserves - A hard fought
win by 10 points in boggy
conditions. A good team
effort with Adam Toohey
kicking four goals and Gary
Busuttil kicking three.
Best Luke Toohey, Mick
Kersley, Adam Toohey, Gary

Busuttil, Mick Anderson

Under 17.5 - In heavy but
fine conditions at Learmonth
the Gordon boys gave a good
account of themselves this
week. After a great start by
the Eagles who lead at quarter time, Learmonths stronger players gradually took
over late in the game.
Best - Grant Raylock, Angus Weedon, Shane Tysoe,
Johnno Bamont.
Under 14.5 - Once again
the boys defended well but
struggled to get the ball past
the centre square. Lachie
Young and Kade Winter
stood out from the boys who
played up from the u12s and
both were amongst Gordons
best. The boys fought the
game out to the end with a
strong last quarter.
Awards - Luke Dobler,
Lachie Reynolds, Angus
McCarthy.
Under 12 - Learmonth put
the first goal on the board
only to be followed by a
great snap from Hamish
Wilken. Jonny Debono took
control in the goal square in
the second quarter and put
a second goal on the board.
Tyson Young was ferocious
under the ball with Bailey
Colligan effective around the
ball. Riley Young and Dylan
Anderson marked well in
defence with Noah McConnell and Michael Fletcher

attacking the ball in the forward line. Cooper Fox, Jack

Johnstone and Hayden Conner were diligent in sending
the ball forward.
Awards - Liam OConnor,
Kade Winter, Jonny Debono.
NETBALL
13b&Under - Another awesome effort by the girls saw
them beat Learmonth 0 17. The girls played a great
defensive game, shutting
down the opposition leaving
them scoreless.
13a&Under - Learmonth
managed to give the girls a
fair challenge before they
settled and comfortably
came out on top.
15&Under - The girls had
a very tough game against
a very physical Learmonth
side. Missing Steph in shooter, Pearle played a good
game in GA. The scores
remained goal for goal up
until the last few minutes of
the game when Gordon remained cool to take the win.
The 17&Under girlshad
a tough encounter against
Learmonth. Despite a few
players being out with injury, the girls worked well
together to turn the ball
over on several occasions.
In the second half they limited Learmonths score while
transitioning the ball into
their own attack.

The Scorpion girls in Under
11s came up against an attacking Sebastopol.

Claire and Sara were in

strong defence mode, sending the ball back to the
midfielders with confidence
and ease. Midfielders Ayla,
Abbie, and Jess were all over
it, helping their team to go
for goal and showing Sebastopol a strong midfield.
Raquel and Eliza were firing too in midfield, giving it
their all to get and keep the
ball in their possession.
