Make students capable to design ordinary steel and
timber structures
Prepare students for advanced knowledge on design
of complex steel and timber structures.


Part A Steel Structures

Chapter 1: Steel Structures and their Analysis and Design

Instructional objectives:
Introduce structural steel, steel structures and make know the design process and the
design methods of steel structures.

Instructional requirements to the topic:
Introduce the steel structures used in civil engineering. Give principal factors that
influence the use of steel in structures. Discuss about the basic system/forms of steel
structures. Categorize structural members used in the steel structures. Give different
type of steel used in the structures. Show BIS classification of structural steel. Describe
the mechanical properties of structural steel. Illustrate the stress strain relationship in
mild and high tensile steel. Inform about the rolled steel sections available in the
market. Define local buckling of steel section and four classes of steel section based on
their moment rotation behavior.

Name the different analysis and design methods used in the design of steel structures.
Discuss on analysis methods. Explain the basic principle of Working Stress Design
Method, Limit State Design Method and Plastic Design Method.

process i.e. structural planning, preliminary design, idealization/modeling of structures
and loads, analysis of structures, design and detailing of structures and preparation of
structural drawing. Explain the use of code in design and Introduce the design code IS

Introduce working stress design method as one of the design methods of steel

Describe the basic assumptions made in working stress design method. Define working

Chapter 3: Limit State Design Method

Instructional objectives:
Introduce limit state design method. Describe different limit states, their principles used
in design of steel structures

Instructional requirements to the topic:
Describe safety and serviceability requirement of structures. Define limit state. List
different limit states considered in the limit state design.

Define characteristic strength of material. Discuss the method of determining
characteristic strength for steel. Define partial safety factor for material. State the
factors to be considered, while deciding the value of partial safety factor for material.

Define partial safety factor for load. State the factors to be considered, while deciding

Chapter 4: Connection in Steel Structures

Introduce different types of connections and make student capable to design these
connections

Instructional requirements to the topic:
Introduce different types of connections used in the steel structures. Describe the uses
of riveted, bolted, welded and pinned connection.

Introduce bolted connection. List the types of bolts available in the market and briefly
discuss the methods of bolting. Interpret the technical terms and give the specification
used in the bolted connection. Explain the different types of bolted connection.
Differentiate simple and eccentric (moment resistant) bolted connection. Describe
different types of failure of bolted connection. Explain design of simple connection
including design of lap/butt joint, truss joint, seat angle connection and web angle
connection). Describe design of eccentric bolted connection when loads lie/do not lie
on the plane of connection.

Introduce welded connection. Briefly discuss the methods of welding. Interpret the
technical terms and give the specification used in the welded connection. Explain the

connection. Explain the design method of simple welded connection including design of

Chapter 3: Tension Members

Introduce tension member used in steel structures and make capable to design tension
member.

Instructional requirements to the topic:
Introduce tension member and discuss about the different types of tension members
used in the steel structures.
Define net and effective sectional area of tension member. Describe the method of
determining net and effective sectional area of plates, angle section and tee section.

Explain different types of failure of tension members. Describe design strength of
tension member prior to yielding of gross section, rupture of critical section and block
shear failure. Give the design steps for the design of tension member of simple and
built-up section subjected to axial and eccentric loads.

Define lug angle and give its rationale. State and explain the design specification for the
design of lug angle in tension member.

Introduce the tension splice and discuss about the method of design of tension splice.

Give tutorials/design exercises on calculation of net and effective sectional area of
tension member, design of tension member of simple and built-up section subjected to
axial/ eccentric tensile load and design of lug angle for angle and channel sections.

Chapter 4: Compression Members

Introduce compression member and make capable to design compression member
used in the steel structures

Introduce compression member and discuss about the different types of compression
members used in the steel structures.

Describe buckling behavior of compression member including flexural, torsional and
flexural-torsional buckling of member. Define effective length and slenderness of
column. Explain the method of calculation of effective length of column. Describe the
role of slenderness of column in buckling behavior.

Define design strength of column. Explain design of column section including single and
double angle strut. Give the design steps of the column of simple and built-up rolled
steel sections subjected to axial load.

Introduce different lateral bracing system for column of built-up section. Describe the
design method of single lacing, double lacing and battening system of lateral bracing.

Define eccentrically loaded column (beam-column). Explain failure of column including
failure due to yielding and failure due to buckling. Describe design of eccentrically
loaded column for yielding and buckling.

Introduce the different types of column bases used in steel structures. Explain the
design method of axially and eccentrically loaded slab base and axially loaded gusseted
base of column.

Define column splice. Describe the design method of column splice, when the ends of
column are faced for bearing over the whole area and when the ends of column are not
faced for complete bearing.

Give tutorials/design exercises on calculation of effective length of column, design
strength of column, design of column of simple section subjected to axial/ eccentric
compressive load, design of column of built-up section subjected to axial compressive
load and design of axially and eccentrically loaded slab base and axially loaded gusseted
base of column.

Chapter 5: Flexure Members

Introduce flexure member and make capable to design different types of beams used in
the steel structures

Instructional requirements to the topic:
Introduce flexure member/beam. Discuss about the different types of beams used in
the steel structures.
Explain the considerations taken into account in the design of beam. Describe the
flexural behavior laterally supported and laterally unsupported beams with their
bending stress distribution diagrams. Define elastic, elasto-plastic and plastic moment
of resistance and elastic critical moment of beam. Describe design strength in bending
for laterally supported and laterally unsupported beam. Explain shear behavior of beam
with its shear stress distribution diagram at elastic and plastic state. Describe design
shear strength of beam when nominal shear strength of a beam is governed by plastic
shear resistance and shear buckling. Explain buckling and crippling behavior of web of
beam. Describe buckling and crippling strength of web of beam. Define limit state of
serviceability in deflection for beam. Describe the condition of beam to satisfy the limit
state of serviceability in deflection. Give the design steps of laterally supported and
unsupported simple and built-up beam.
Introduce plate girder with its components. Describe the method of (preliminary sizing
and shaping) proportioning of size of the elements of plate girder i.e., web thickness on
the basis of maintenance accessibility, serviceability and compression flange buckling
criterion, depth of web on the basis of deflection control criteria and economy of
material and flange width and thickness.
Explain the design method of plate girder in bending for the case of laterally restrained
and unrestrained compression flange, in shear by post critical and tension field method
and describe the condition of plate girder to satisfy the limit state of serviceability in
deflection. Give the design steps of laterally supported and unsupported plate girder.
Introduce stiffeners used in plate girder. Describe how the requirement of different
stiffeners is assessed. Explain the design of bearing, intermediate stiffeners and
horizontal stiffeners.
Describe the design of connection of different components of plate girder. Discuss the
method of curtailment of flange plates and method of web and flange splicing.
Give tutorials on calculation of bending, shear, web buckling and crippling strength of
beam. Present design exercises on the design of simple, built-up and welded plate
girder with horizontal and vertical stiffeners.

Introduce steel roof truss with its components. Discuss about the configuration of roof

of wind load on simple truss. Discuss about design of different components of roof truss
including bracing. Explain the method of design of purlin and support for roof truss.

Give tutorials/design exercises on calculation of wind load on roof truss, design of purlin
of angle and I- section and support for roof truss.

Part B: Timber Structures

Chapter 7: Timber Structures and Design Methods

Introduce timber structures and their design methods.
Instructional requirements to the topic:
Introduce the timber structures used in civil engineering. Discuss about the different
types of timbers used in the structure based on its species, grade and quality. Give the
modification factors for permissible stresses and constants used in the design of timber
structure.
Discuss about the design method and IS code used in the design of timber structures.

Chapter 8: Joints in timber structures

Introduce timber joints and make capable to design timber joints.
Instructional requirements to the topic:
Introduce the nailed and bolted types of timber joints. Explain the method of design of
nailed and bolted timber joints.

Chapter 9: Design of Compression Member

Chapter 10: Design of Flexure Member

Introduce different types of timber beam including Flitched beam. Give the design

Course Project
A Course Project on integrated design of a building/industrial steel structure is assigned to
each individual student. Assignments of course work should include planning, analysis and
design of at least three connected components of a building or an industrial steel structure.
40% weightage of the internal assessment is given to the course work. Course work is to be
submitted at the end of semester.
