COCKPIT LIGHTS - SYSTEM PRESENTATION
GENERAL
The cockpit lighting system enables the crew to easily
see all details, inscriptions and indications on the
equipment whatever the level of darkness.
The cockpit lighting system comprises:
- dome lights,
- console and floor lighting,
- center instrument and standby compass lighting,
- reading lights,
- instrument and panel lighting,
- annunciator light test,
- outlet plugs.
DOME LIGHTS
Two dome lights provide shadowless general cockpit
lighting.
Each dome light has four halogen long life lamps.
NOTE: In electrical emergency configuration, the dome
light of the F/O side remains available, provided
the dome light control is not set to off.
CONSOLE AND FLOOR LIGHTING
Briefcase stowage, side console and floor lighting is
provided at the Captain and First Officer stations.
Three lights are used for each console lighting and
for each briefcase lighting. Four lights, fitted at
the base of Capt and F/O seats, are used for floor
lighting.
CENTER INSTRUMENT AND STANDBY COMPASS LIGHTING
The flood lighting of Captain, First Officer and center
main instrument panels is ensured by four lights
located under the glareshield.
A flood light located on the overhead panel is used
to illuminate the instruments and panels on the
pedestal.
NOTE: In electrical emergency configuration, the
lighting of the Captain and left hand center
zones remains available. The pedestal flood
light swivels towards the rear of the pedestal.
The standby compass is provided with integral lighting.

READING LIGHTS
The Captain and the First Officer reading lights are
fitted on the upright of the cockpit side windows.
Supplementary reading lights are located on the
overhead panel.
The Captain and First Officer reading lights and
supplementary reading lights illuminate the sliding
tables, the lateral map tables and the ceiling, if
necessary. The supplementary reading lights swivel.
INSTRUMENT AND PANEL INTEGRAL LIGHTING
All the instruments installed in the cockpit other
than the cathode ray tubes are integrally lit. The
lights, illumating the instruments, are equipped with
a dimming control.
This integral lighting consists of miniature lamps
supplied by AC power from lighting controllers.
There are 3 independent controllers to supply integral
lighting of:
- the overhead panel,
- the instrument panels, consoles and the center
pedestal,
- glareshield and Flight Control Unit (FCU).
ANNUNCIATOR LIGHT TEST
The annunciator lights mounted on the panels and
instruments in the cockpit are sun readable lights.
The integrity of all annunciator lights can be tested
and their intensity can be dimmed.

CABIN LIGHTS - SYSTEM PRESENTATION
GENERAL
The cabin light system provides illumination of the
cabin and entrances, lavatories, galleys and attendant
work areas.
The system provides illumination of lavatory lighted
signs. There are call lights to indicate the location
from which a passenger call is initiated. Individual
reading lights are installed.
CABIN LIGHTING
The cabin lighting consists of four strips of
fluorescent lamps.
In each cabin zone, the four strips are divided into
two pairs for control purposes (inboard pair = CEILING
lights and outboard pair = WINDOW lights). Each strip
consists of many fluorescent lamps. Each fluorescent
lamp is installed in a lampholder with an integral
ballast unit.
ENTRANCE AREA LIGHTING
The entry areas are illuminated by fluorescent lamps
installed in ceilling panels.
Each fluorescent lamp is installed in a lampholder
with an integral ballast unit.
LAVATORY LIGHTING
Each lavatory lighting consists of a fluorescent lamp.
A fluorescent lamp and an integral ballast unit are
installed in each lavatory, adjacent to the mirror.
PASSENGER READING LIGHTS
The reading lights are installed in the Passenger
Service Units (PSUs) fitted above the passenger seats.
The Passenger Service Unit fitted must agree with the
number of seats in a row.
LAVATORY LIGHTED SIGNS
The lavatory signs indicate the position of the
lavatories in the cabin and whether they are occupied
or not.
A lavatory occupied sign is installed near the FWD
lavatory and near the two rear lavatories.
ATTENDANT WORK LIGHTS
The cabin attendant work lights consist of high
intensity lights installed in an overhead panel above
the attendant seats.

CABIN LIGHTS - SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
GENERAL
The cabin lights are controlled through the CIDS which
includes a Forward Attendant Panel, two directors (one
active and one in standby) and DEUs. Some DEUs are used
for the light system, they are called type "A" DEUs.
The Forward Attendant Panel controls the cabin lights.
Signals from the Forward Attendant Panel are processed
by the directors. The directors transmit these signals
to each Decoder Encoder Unit.
FWD ATTND PNL = Forward Attendant Panel
CIDS = Cabin Intercommunication Data System
DEU = Decoder/Encoder Unit
CABIN GENERAL LIGHTS
The related Decoder/Encoder units control the cabin
fluorescent lamps according to the selection on the
Forward Attendant Panel.
The FWD ATTND PNL controls the DEUs to give: full
intensity, 50% intensity or 10% intensity for their
corresponding window and/or ceiling lights.
ENTRY LIGHTS
The related Decoder/Encoder units control the entry
fluorescent lamps according to the Forward Attendant
Panel selection.
The FWD ATTND PNL controls, via the CIDS directors,
the DEUs in order to give full, 50% or 10% intensity.
NOTE: If the engines are running and the cockpit door is
open, the CIDS directors signal the DEU of the left
forward entry light to set the intensity to 10%.
PASSENGER READING LIGHTS
The Forward Attendant Panel controls the activation
of the passenger reading lights.
The related DEU provides DC control power for individual
switching.
The passenger reading lights can be tested, via the
DEUs, using the Programming and Test Panel.
ATTENDANT WORK LIGHTS
The Forward Attendant Panel controls the activation
of the attendant work lights.
Each power unit is connected to a DEU of the CIDS
directors for light test activation.
The reading lights can be tested, via the DEUs, using
the Programming and Test Panel.

CABIN LIGHTS - READING/WORK LIGHT TEST USING PTP
The test of the reading lights includes the test of
the Attendant work lights, the decoration lights
(option) and the related reading light power unit (each
power unit can drive three separate lights).
Before activation of the test, the pushbuttons POWER
ATTN and POWER READ on the FWD ATTND PNL have to be
pressed to energize the reading/work light system. If
not, a SWITCH ON POWER message will be displayed on
the PTP.
The test also detects any bulb failures by checking
changes in the current and signaling the failure before
the bulb actually burns out.

The TAXI and TAKE-OFF lights are installed on the Nose
Landing Gear, in a fixed position.
They are controlled by the three position NOSE
selector :
- T.O : Taxi and Take-Off lights are on.
- TAXI : Taxi light is on.
- OFF : All lights are off.
The TAXI and TAKE-OFF lights automatically go off when
the Nose Landing Gear is retracted.
RUNWAY TURN-OFF LIGHTS
The RUNWAY TURN-OFF lights provide illumination of the
lateral areas of the runway.
Two RUNWAY TURN-OFF lights are installed on the Nose
Landing Gear.
The RUNWAY TURN-OFF lights are controlled by the RWY
TURN-OFF switch :
- ON : Both lights are on, only if the Nose
Landing Gear is downlocked.
- OFF : Both lights are off.
WING and ENGINE SCAN LIGHTS
The WING and ENGINE SCAN lights illuminate the Wing
Leading Edges and the Engine Air Intakes.
The WING and ENGINE SCAN lights are installed on each
side of the fuselage.
In flight, they enable the Crew to visually detect ICE
on the ENGINE AIR INTAKES and WING LEADING EDGES.
The WING and ENGINE SCAN lights are controlled by the
WING switch.

NAVIGATION LIGHTS
The NAVIGATION lights give a visual indication of the
position of the aircraft and its direction of flight.
The NAVIGATION lights system consists of :
- a RED colored light, installed in the Left-hand
wing-tip leading edge.
- a GREEN colored light, installed in the
right-hand wing-tip leading edge.
- a WHITE colored light, installed on the
Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) tail cone, at the
extreme aft of the A/C.
The NAVIGATION lights are controlled by the NAV switch.
LANDING LIGHTS
The LANDING lights provide illumination of the runway
when the A/C lands at night.
Two LANDING lights are installed: One on the under
side of each wing.
Each LANDING light is controlled by a LAND switch.
The LANDING lights can be extended at all A/C speeds.
ANTI-COLLISION/BEACON LIGHTS
Two red flashing ANTI-COLLISION/BEACON lights are
installed: One on the lower and one on the upper
fuselage, at the aircraft center line.
They are controlled by the BEACON switch.
Three STROBE Lights are installed: Two at each wing
tip, on the leading edges and one on the TAIL cone.
The STROBE Lights are synchronized lights that operate
alternately with the ANTI-COLLISION/BEACON lights.
The STROBE Lights are controlled by the STROBE switch.
LOGO LIGHTS
Two LOGO Lights are installed in the horizontal
stabilizers in order to light up the Airline Logo.
The Airline Logo is lit up when on the overhead panel
the EXT LT/NAV & LOGO switch is set to 1 or 2 position.
The LOGO Lights are controlled together with the
NAVIGATION Lights.
The LOGO Lights are optional.

EMERGENCY LIGHTING - SYSTEM PRESENTATION
GENERAL
In case of failure of the Main Lighting System or
during Emergency conditions, the purpose of the
Emergency Lighting System is to provide the
illumination of:
- the Cabin and Exit Areas,
- the EXIT location and EXIT Marking Signs at
each of the Passenger/Crew doors and at the
Emergency Exit doors,
- the Floor Proximity Emergency Escape Path
Marking System (FPEEPMS),
- the Lavatory Auxiliary Light,
- the emergency Escape Hatch-handles
(A319/A320),
- the escape route over the wing (A319/A320),
- and the Door Escape Slides.
The Emergency Lighting System is controlled from the
cockpit by the Flight Crew by a three position switch
"EMER EXIT LT" located on the Overhead panel or from
the cabin by the Cabin Attendants by the "EMER"
pushbutton located on the Forward Attendant Panel
(FAP).
EMERGENCY POWER SUPPLIED UNITS (EPSUs) located in the
Cabin, allow the associated Emergency Lights to be
electrically supplied by the 28 VDC ESSential BUS, via
the EPSUs, or by integrated batteries when the 28 VDC
ESSential BUS is lost.
NOTE: Depending on the Emergency Lighting System
chosen by the airline, additional Power Supply
Units supply FPEEPM lights and exit signs.
CABIN EMERGENCY LIGHTS
Cabin Emergency Lights are installed throughout the
Cabin, in the main and cross aisle ceiling panels, in
order to provide illumination of the Cabin and Exit
Areas.
EXIT SIGNS
The Emergency Lighting System provides illumination
of the EXIT MARKING signs and EXIT LOCATION signs,
installed at the Aft/FWD Passenger/Crew Doors and at
the Emergency Exit doors.
There are three types:
- WALL-MOUNTED EXIT marking signs, one for each FWD/Aft
Passenger/Crew door and Emergency Exit door,
- EXIT LOCATION sign, double sided, or single sided
for the overwing Emergency Exits,
- EXIT MARKING signs, for each Passenger/Crew door and
one for each Emergency Exit door.
One Escape Hatch-Handle Light is integrated on each
Emergency Exit door (A319/A320).
NOTE: The EXIT signs and associated lights can be
manually switched on from the NO SMOKING switch
located on the overhead panel, or automatically
in case of rapid decompression or with the
SLAT/FLAP and/or LANDING GEAR condition(s).

OPERATION
The EMER EXIT LT switch on the overhead panel controls
the Emergency Lighting System.
The EMER EXIT LT switch has three positions : OFF, ARM
and ON. Each of these positions sends a discrete ground
signal to the Emergency Power Supply Units.
OFF
In the OFF position a ground signal prevents the
Emergency Lighting System from being switched on when
the AC and DC busbar voltages are not available. The
EMER EXIT LT OFF annunciator light comes on.
Note : The EXIT SIGNS and the emergency escape
hatch-handle lights come on with EMER EXIT LT
switch OFF, when the NO SMOKING switch is in
ON position or in AUTO position with landing
gear extended.
ARM
In the ARM position the EMER EXIT LT OFF annunciator
light goes off.
When the 115VAC busbar voltage is not avalaible, the
cabin Emergency Lighting and the Floor Proximity
Emergency Escape Path Marking lights System come on.
The power is supplied from the 28VDC/6VDC converter
in the corresponding EPSU.
When the 28VDC busbar voltage is not available, the
batteries of all EPSUs supply the Emergency Lighting
System for at least 12 minutes.
The batteries are no longer charged.
ON
In the ON position the Emergency Lighting System comes
on, as if the LIGHT EMER pushbutton on the Forward
Attendant Panel was pushed.
The cabin emergency lights, the exit signs, the escape
hatch-handle lights and the floor proximity lights
come on. The 28VDC/6VDC converters of the EPSUs supply
these loads as long as the 28VDC Essential busbar is
available.
If the 28VDC busbar voltage falls below 16V, the EPSUs
internal batteries continue to supply the loads for
at least 12 minutes.
The batteries are no longer charged.
OTHER CASES
Independently of the switch positions, the integral
lights in the respective escape slides come on when
the passenger/crew doors or the emergency exit doors
are opened with the escape slides armed.
In the event of excessive cabin depressurization, the
exit marking signs and the exit location signs
automatically come on.
TEST
The EPSUs have a test circuit which tests the condition
of the battery unit, the logic unit and the related
loads.
This test is first performed from the Programming and
Test Panel, but if the BAT OK or SYS OK annunciator
light does not come on, an isolated test must be
performed with the pushbutton located on each EPSU.

EMERGENCY LIGHTING SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION/OPERATION ALTERNATE FLOOR MOUNTED "BRUCE" EEPMS
GENERAL
The emergency lighting system provides illumination
in case of failure of the main lighting system or
during emergency conditions.
The emergency light system is equipped with two types
of power units, one for cabin lights and signs, the
other for emergency escape markers.
The emergency lights are equipped with 6VDC lamps.
ELECTRICAL SUPPLY
One type of Emergency Power Supply Unit (EPSU) is
supplied with 115VAC and 28VDC where as the other is
only supplied with 28VDC.
EMERGENCY POWER SUPPLY UNITS
Each type of EPSU supplies its corresponding lights
with 6VDC, either by transforming aircraft DC power
or from internal battery.
One type of EPSU has the internal battery charged
permanently by 28/6VDC transformer provided AC BUS 1
is powered.

OPERATION
The EMER EXIT LT switch on the overhead panel controls
the Emergency Lighting System.
The EMER EXIT LT switch has three positions : OFF, ARM
and ON. Each of these positions sends a discrete ground
signal to the two types of power supply units.
OFF
In the OFF position a ground signal prevents the
Emergency Lighting System from being switched on when
the AC and DC busbar voltages are not available. The
EMER EXIT LT OFF annunciator light comes on.
Note: The EXIT SIGNS come on with EMER EXIT LT switch
OFF, when the NO SMOKING switch is in ON position
or in AUTO position with landing gear extended.
ARM
In the ARM position the EMER EXIT LT OFF annunciator
light goes off.
When the 115VAC busbar voltage is not avalaible, the
cabin Emergency Lighting and the EXIT signs come on.
The power is supplied from the 28VDC/6VDC converter
in the corresponding EPSU.
When the 28VDC busbar voltage is not available, the
batteries of all EPSUs and Power Supply Units supply
the entire Emergency Lighting System for at least 12
minutes.
The batteries are no longer charged.
ON
In the ON position the Emergency Lighting System comes
on, as if the LIGHT EMER pushbutton on the Forward
Attendant Panel was pushed.
The cabin emergency lights, the exit signs and the
floor proximity lights come on. The power is supplied
through the 28VDC/6VDC converter in all EPSUs and by
the Power Supply Unit batteries.

If the 28VDC essential busbar voltage falls below 16V,
the EPSU and Power Supply Unit batteries continue to
supply the loads for at least 12 minutes.
The batteries are no longer charged.
TEST
Only the EPSUs have a test circuit which tests the
condition of the battery unit, the logic unit and the
related loads.
This test is first performed from the Programming and
Test Panel, but if the BAT OK or SYS OK annunciator
light does not come on, an isolated test must be
performed with the pushbutton located on each EPSU.

EMERGENCY LIGHTS - TEST
BATTERY CAPACITY TEST USING PTP
Before activating a test, it is necessary to set the
NO SMOKING and the EMERGENCY LIGHTING switches to the
OFF position.
The battery capacity test indicates the battery
capacity condition of the Emergency Power Supply Units
10WL thru 15WL.
The SYSTEM TEST function allows the following units
to be tested on ground only:
- ACTIVE DIRECTOR,
- CIDS BUS,
- DEU A,
- DEU B,
- CAM,
- PROG AND TEST PNL,
- FWD ATTND PNL,
- ADD ATTND PNLS,
- ATTND IND PNLS,
- LOUDSPEAKERS,
- SIGN LAMPS,
- AREA CALL PANELS,
- PAX CALL LAMPS,
- READING WORK LIGHTS,
- EMER LIGHT BATTERY,
- DRAINMASTS.
To prevent unauthorized access it is necessary to enter
a code for the battery test.
The duration of the test will be up to two hours.
During the test, it is possible to use the PTP for
other functions.
When the test is activated the BAT light in the BAT
key comes on. An internal time count is started in the
CIDS DIRECTOR.
If the test is OK, the BAT OK light beside the BAT key
comes on.
If there is a failure message on the PTP and if
annunciator light does not come on, you have to test
each EPSU with their individual test button.
When the BAT TEST RESET has been selected, the BAT OK
light and the BAT key light go off.
In case of a failure, the respective result will be
written into directors GND SCAN memory.

loads.
ISOLATED EPSU TEST
An individual test on each EPSU must be performed when
the test from the PTP shows a fault on the emergency
lighting network.
This isolated test starts when the test pushbutton is
pushed.
A defective EPSU will cause a red LED to come on and
indicate which part is defective. The green SYSTEM OK
LED indicates a serviceable EPSU.
