Introduction

Solar energy in one form or another is the source of nearly all energy on the earth. Humans,
like all other animals and plants, rely on the sun for warmth and food. However, people also
harness the sun's energy in many other different ways. For example, fossil fuels, plant matter
from a past geological age, is used for transportation and electricity generation and is
essentially just stored solar energy from millions of years ago. Similarly, biomass converts
the sun's energy into a fuel, which can then be used for heat, transport or electricity. Wind
energy, used for hundreds of years to provide mechanical energy or for transportation, uses
air currents that are created by solar heated air and the rotation of the earth. Today wind
turbines convert wind power into electricity as well as its traditional uses. Even
hydroelectricity is derived from the sun. Hydropower depends on the evaporation of water
by the sun, and its subsequent return to the Earth as rain to provide water in dams.
Photovoltaic (often abbreviated as PV) are a simple and elegant method of harnessing the
sun's energy. PV devices (solar cells) are unique in that they directly convert the incident
solar radiation into electricity, with no noise, pollution or moving parts, making them robust,
reliable and long lasting. Solar cells are based on the same principles and materials behind
the communications and computer revolutions, and this CDROM covers the operation, use
and applications of photovoltaic devices and systems.

PART A
Question 1
Answer:
According to my view, I think it is true that more sustainable, cleaner and safer
world can be created by making wiser energy choices. This is because nature
resources behind every technology are not realized by human. Energy here
meant is renewable energy such solar energy, wind power and etc. These
energies are trapped and applied in most of the developed countries in order
to reduce the amount of electricity (kW) used. By using renewable energy, we
can avoid pollutions as well as can manage to have a healthy-living
environment.

Question 2
Answer:
Types of renewable energy are:

Solar Energy
- Is radiant light and heat from the sun.
- Widely used in Japan.

Hydropower
- Power derived from the energy of falling water and running water.
- Widely practised in China.

Wind Power
- is the conversion of wind energy into a useful form of energy, such as using wind turbines to
produce electrical power, windmills for mechanical power, wind pumps for water
pumping or drainage, or sails to propel ships.
- Well known in Denmark.

Wave (Ocean) Power
- Is the transport of energy by ocean surface waves, and the capture of that energy to do
useful work for example, electricity generation, water desalination, or the pumping of water (into
reservoirs).

Geothermal Energy
- Is thermal energy generated and stored in the Earth. Thermal energy is the energy that
determines the temperature of matter.
- Well known renewable energy in Iceland.

Ventilation Using Solar Power

(c) Malaysia aims to reduce carbon emissions from 187 million tons in 2005
to 74.8 million tons in 2020. In your opinion, what are the steps to be
taken to achieve this goal in 2020?
According to my point of view, I think the increment in usage of renewable
energy could reduce the percentage of carbon emissions from 187 million tons
to 74.8 million tons by 2020. This can be proven when the transports which
releases ample amount of carbon monoxide, CO to the air can be overcome by
using palm oil as a form of Biomass energy. In fact, each house should fix a
solar panel in the future in order to reduce the carbon emissions as well as to
maintain a cost saving or budget daily life.

Conclusion

As a conclusion of this project, I would like to say that this project helped me in
thinking using various ways. For an instance, the answers obtained by us (my friends
and I who chose the same task Task 1; Solar Energy) is almost the same with
different solutions or methods. From this, I also learnt to strengthen the topics I am
weak at such as logarithms and trigonometric.

Besides that, I have learnt a new lesson while completing my project which
was doing graph using Microsoft Excel efficiently. Using the Microsoft Word, I was
also able to interpret data neatly. In fact, doing graphs using Microsoft Excel is way
smarter than drawing it by hand. Undeniable, it helps us to find certain values
accurately as how the examiner wants.

Finally, I highly appreciate and am thankful to those who helped me to
complete my assignment in a short period of time including my Additional
Mathematics teacher Mrs. Tan Gien Pei, parents and also dearest friends.
