1 THE PROCEDURE APPLIED FOR HOUSEHOLD SURVEYS
Household survey was chosen as the main tool to obtain information about
the socio-economic situation of the project area. With an aim to cover
households with different socioeconomic status, simple random sampling was
preferred. The procedure followed during the surveys is briefly described
below.
1.1 SURVEY DESIGN AND PREPARATION FOR THE FIELD STUDIES
The surveys were designed to cover issues regarding:
- Basic characteristics of the household members (e.g. sex, age, marital
status, education level, occupation);
- Income and expenditures;
- Land use and agriculture;
- Housing and infrastructure
- Education and health; and
- Social integration.
- Perceptions regarding the proposed project.

At a confidence level of 95%, the research was designed to cover a sample size
of at least 205 households in order to limit the confidence interval to 6.5%.
Treating the settlements as tabulation groups (rather than taking them as
separate domains) the target sample size was divided proportionally
according to the household numbers at each settlement.

In order to approximate the target survey number, the target sample size was
increased by %30 (anticipated non-response rate) for all the settlements.
Ten pilot surveys were applied in the project area prior to the launch of field
works. The questionnaires were improved with the findings of pilot surveys.

The lists of all houses, including their addresses were obtained from the
quarter and village headmen. After numbering each household, samples were
selected by using the random sampling tool of MS Excel.

1.2 FIELD STUDIES

The surveys were conducted over a period of 7 days and the team did not
encounter any major problem. At the completion of the field studies, the
number of surveys was above the initial targets, covering 10.3% of the
households and 12.4% of the total population. This provided a lower
maximum sampling error at 6.3% at a %95 confidence level. The response
rates and reasons for non-response are provided in Table *.* and Table *.*.

The project team experienced some refusals in Kaklik. It was understood that
there had been prior experiences with swindlers in the area, and therefore
some women were hesitant to reply the questionnaires. Some people on the
other hand, merely did not want to spare time for surveys.

64%of the surveys were conducted with household heads and 30% were
conducted with the spouses of household heads. 44% of the respondents were
females.

The survey team did not do surveys with members under 18 years old. A
majority (83%) of the surveys were conducted with people between 30-59
years old (Table *.*).

1.2.2 Correctness of the respondents and survey environment
In 52% of the surveys, the respondents were alone whereas in 48% other
household members, neighbours or friends were also present. According to
the rankings of the survey team, most of the respondents tended to answer the
questions correctly and in general the response ratio was satisfactory (Table
*.*). In few surveys though, the project team felt that the respondents were not
very accurate, either because they did not know the answers or did not want
to disclose some private information (such as income levels, debts etc.).
Particularly in Kaklik, it was observed that some female respondents were
hesitant to answer some of the questions as they were scared about their
husbands reaction.

1.2.3 Data Analysis
Statistical Package for the Social Sciences Program was used for the
establishment of a database and analysis of the results. Most of the open-
ended questions were coded to obtain quantitative results, whereas some
were used as qualitative information.

TERMS AND DEFINITIONS USED IN THE SOCIAL SECTION
Adult literacy rate: The adult literacy rate refers to the number of literate
adults expressed as a percentage of the total adult population aged 15 years
and above (UNSD, 2008).
Confidence interval: An estimate of a population parameter that consists of a
range of values bounded by statistics called upper and lower confidence
limits, within which the value of the parameter is expected to be located (EPA,
2008).
Confidence level: The level of certainty to which an estimate can be trusted.
The degree of certainty is expressed as the chance that a true value will be
included within a specified range, called a confidence interval (EPA, 2008).
Crude birth rate: The crude birth rate relates the number of births during the
year to the average population in that year. The value is expressed per 1000
inhabitants (TUIK, 2008).
Crude death rate: The crude death rate relates the number of deaths during
the year to the average population in that year. The value is expressed per
1000 inhabitants (TUIK, 2008).
Economically active population: Labour force, sometimes labelled also as
active persons or active population) comprises employed and unemployed
persons (Eurostat, 2008).
Economically inactive population: Economically inactive population
comprises all persons who were neither "employed" nor "unemployed" during
the short reference period used to measure "current activity". This population
can be split into four groups: Students; Retired; Engaged in family duties;
Other economically inactive (Eurostat, 2008).
General fertility rate: Number of live births per 1,000 females of childbearing
age (between the ages of 15 and 44 years) (TUIK, 2007).
Household: One or more persons, with or without a kinship, living in the
same house or in the same part of a house, who share their earnings and
expenditures and/or who take part in the management of the household
and/or render services to the household (TUIK, 2008).

Improved sanitation facilities: Facilities that ensure hygienic separation of
human excreta from human contact. They include:
Flush or pour-flush toilet/latrine to:
- piped sewer system
- septic tank
- pit latrine
Ventilated improved pit (VIP) latrine
Pit latrine with slab
Composting toilet. (Unicef and WHO, 2008:6)
Infant mortality rate: The ratio of the number of deaths of children under one
year of age during the year to the number of live births in that year. The value
is expressed per 1000 live births. (Eurostat, 2008).
Longitudinal data: Data in which many units are observed over multiple time
periods (OECD, 2004).
Median age: The age of the person in the middle of a population dataset when
all the persons are arranged according to their age in an ascending order. This
is the age where exactly one half of the population is older, and the other half
is younger (Eurostat, 2008).
Natural population change: The difference between the number of live births
and the number of deaths during the year. The natural increase (or natural
decrease) is negative when the number of deaths exceeds the number of births
(Eurostat, 2008).
Project site: Designated project land.
Project area: Settlements within the 5 km radius of the project site (i.e. Kaklik
town, Yokusbasi, Asagidagdere and Alikurt villages)
Sampling error: The maximum expected difference between a probability
sample value and the true value (EPA, 2008). At a confidence level of 95%,
sampling error is generally recommended to be less than 10% for reliability
purposes.

Total fertility rate: The mean number of children that would be born alive to a
woman during her lifetime if she were to pass through her childbearing years
conforming to the fertility rates by age of a given year. The total fertility rate is
also used to indicate the replacement level fertility; in more developed
countries, a rate of 2.1 is considered to be replacement level (Eurostat, 2008).
Unimproved sanitation facilities: Facilities that do not ensure hygienic
separation of human excreta from human contact. Unimproved facilities
include pit latrines without a slab or platform, hanging latrines and bucket
latrines. (Unicef and Who, 2008:6)
Youth literacy rate: Youth literacy rate refers to the number of literate youths
expressed as a percentage of the total youth population aged 15 to 24 years
(UNSD, 2008).
