Project Overview
Project Description
Until this project was delivered CNA did their rating of policies (the process of giving a
rate to a policy to determine the risk and business type) using ISO standards. But with
this project, new rating algorithms were introduced and gave the edge to the company to
have a more competitive rating system.
The project was completed in two phases, where the first phase was to introduce the
protocols and the framework of the paramount structure and in the second phase
introduce the coverages that were meant only for paramount policies.
Phase I

This initial process of the project was to determine the parts of the code that were
responsible for the insurance rating and the impact it will have on the whole process
There were no new introduction of screens but the existing automation process needed
to automated and these new set of rated of policies were to work along with the old ones
which could not be changed.
Data needed to be queried with a different algorithm to the mother system [MS] which
held all the policy details. The algorithms were given for the new queries and we were to
come up with the new queries for the data extraction.

Phase II

In the second phase of the project, the task was to make sure that the paramount policies
included the new coverages that were required for this and showed a stark improvement
in the rating over the old ones.
The Catastrophic analysis application needed to be updated that it can also support the
paramount policies. Since I extensively worked on this project, I took care of the offshore
part for this project.

Technical Details of the Project

Framework : Bridge MVC

Tools: IBM RAD, Polytron Version Control System, Cruise control
Server: IBM Websphere 1.6
Languages: Java, Javascript, JSP, Servlet, Ajax, Oracle Toplink, MySQL
Phase I
Existing JSP web pages needed update to include the new rating systems. Tables were
introduced in if-else loops to differentiate the ISO from Paramount [PT] rated policies.
Data was fed dynamically into the table cells.
Javascript methods needed to be updated to throw caution to the increased level of
decimal rounding that was introduced in the new rating systems.
New MySQL queries for the new rating algorithm needed to be included in the part when
a policy is taken into the system [application] from the mother system [MySQL database].
The applications database required inclusion of data tables which could show the data
that needed to be shown on screen that were accessed using codes in the program.
The automation part where policies are updated needed to include the algorithm for the
new rating protocol.
Phase II
New coverages were included into the policy. This needed to be updated in the screen
[JSP], the code and the database where it was stored.
These coverages were extracted from different coverage levels from the MS. New
queries needed to be written for that.
The risk browser application extracted data using a sequence of policy details as key. For
the new paramount policies one of the elements in the key was not unique and will be
constant. The data extraction structure of the risk browser application required a
complete modification.
Microsoft Office Excel Extractor and Microsoft Office Excel Injector ATL transformation
was implemented to assist the underwriters to view all policy details together.

My tasks in the Project

Phase I

I was in the initial search phase where we identified code parts that required
modifications.
The main responsibility was the part of coverage inclusion through data extraction from
MySQL DB. I needed to write MySQL Queries to include new coverage data into
application and save it in all parts of the policy data and show it on all screens where the
relative data was being shown.
Since I had worked on automating a similar application before I took up one of the tasks
in the automation part where all policy data required the new rating to be implied on it
before showing the rated values on the screen.
Phase II

I worked on the part of creating a new algorithm to modify the key structure used in my
previous project to extract data for policy definition.
I also worked on query modification for addition of coverage values for rating.
A button was included in one of the screens and if the policy was rated an excel would be
exported from the application which will hold just the new rated values that are only
specific to paramount policies.

Primary Goals
Business Goals of the Project

The Proprietary Property rating project enabled CNA to develop property rates for all
package and mono-line property business written on an admitted basis excluding Large
Property and Small Business. Once filings were approved for all states, subscription to
ISO property rates was no longer required. In the future, rates will be developed using
CNA data and compared to industry and competitor information. Using internal analytics,
we developed rates based on unique data elements not found in our competitor filings,
providing CNA a competitive advantage. Converting to proprietary rates allowed CNA to
build a consistent property platform including underwriting, risk selection, rating, and
pricing. Underwriters will make better underwriting decisions based on the new rating
and underwriting criteria, and will evaluate risks similarly across business units. For better
execution and planning, this project was divided into 2 phase viz. Phase I Proprietary
Rate Delivery in Ins-bridge & Phase II - Forms, Products, & Coverage.

As part of this phase II project, we delivered a complete property policy form (including
Package Equipment Breakdown, Crime, and Inland Marine) rewrite to support the new
rating structure delivered through phase I.

What I learnt from this Project?

Since I worked on a similar application the work here was very understandable to me.

My SQL querying
Code analysis
Excel extraction
Further Java code levels.
