BUILTENVIRONMENT:ENVIRONMENTALDESIGNANDENGINEERINGMSc
ThisMScaimstoimprovetheenergy,health
andenvironmentalperformanceofnewand
existingbuildings.Itprovidesasoundtrainingin
environmentaldesignfundamentals,focussing
oncriticalissuesofCO
2
emissionsandpollution
fromthefossilfuelconsumedbybuildings,and
theimpactonoccupanthealthandthe
environment.
Degreesummary
Theprogrammeaimstodevelopstudent'sknowledgeandexpertisein
problemsolvingintheareaofthebuiltenvironment,andprovidea
frameworkfordevelopinginnovativethinkinginthedesignandoperation
ofbuildings,placingassociatedenvironmentalissuesinaglobal,national
andpersonalcontext.
TheUCLBartlettistheUK'slargestmulti-disciplinaryFacultyofthe
BuiltEnvironment,bringingtogetherscientificandprofessional
specialismsrequiredtoresearch,understand,design,constructand
operatethebuildingsandurbanenvironmentsofthefuture.
LocatedinLondon,itisattheheartofalargeclusterofcreative
architectsandengineeringfirms,nexttotheUK'sseatofgovernment
andfinanceandhasalltheresourcesofaworldcitytohand.
ThearchitecturecomingoutoftheUCLBartlettischaracterisedbya
highlevelofinventionandcreativity.Theschoolisinternationally
knownasacentreforinnovativedesign.
Theprogrammeisdeliveredthroughacombinationofinteractive
seminars,individualandgrouptutorials,sitevisitsandaresidentialfield
trip.Assessmentisthroughunseenexamination,coursework,andthe
builtenvironmentreport.Jointcoursework,includingtwomajor
low-energyarchitecturaldesignprojects,iscarriedoutbystudentsin
multidisciplinaryteams.
Degreestructure
Mode:Full-time1year;Flexible3-5years
Studentsundertakemodulestothevalueof180credits.Theprogramme
consistsofsixcoremodules(90credits),twooptionalmodule(30credits)
andabuiltenvironmentreport(60credits).
APostgraduateDiploma(120credits,full-timeninemonths)isoffered.

building-relatedprofession,suchasarchitecture,low-energydesign
consultancy,orbuildingservicesengineering.Astheawarenessofglobal
environmentalissuesincreases,thedemandforpeoplewithexpertisein
thehealthandenergyperformanceofbuildingsisexpandingrapidly.A
numberofstudentshaveusedtheMScasafoundationforMPhil/PhD
research.

Employability
Thisprogrammeisvery"closetomarket"withmanystudentsfindingjobs
evenbeforetheirstudieshavefinished.Theskillsstudentsgainarethose
thatemployersneed.Forexample,weteachseveraltoolsusedby
commercialcompaniesincludingthethermalanalysissoftware,TASfrom
EDSL,andSAP.StudentscanwalkstraightintojobwhereTASisused
andbeusefulimmediately.Wefindgraduatesfromseveralyearsago,
contactusandrecruitfromthecourse,listeningtofeedbackfromthese
graduatesandmakingchangestomodules,ensureswekeepthecourse
relevanttoindustryneeds.
Entryrequirements
Thenormalminimumqualificationsareanuppersecond-classBachelor's
degreefromaUKuniversityoranoverseasqualificationofanequivalent
standardcombinedwithayearsrelevantexperienceinthebuilt
environmentfield.
Forapplicantswithoutafirstdegreeorfullprofessionalmembership,but
withrelevantandsubstantialworkexperienceinthefield,aspecial
qualifyingexaminationmaybeset.Detailsofthisroutecanbeobtained
