SOCIAL STATISTICS
IN NIGERIA

2012
PART II: LEGISTATURE, COMMUNICATIONS,

TOURISM
1

PREFACE
The Social Statistics Report 2012 is a comprehensive compilation of the contemporary social
situation in Nigeria. The Report presents a variety of social and economic indicators with which quality of
life can be measured, in most cases, over the last four years.
The survey and sample design from which most of the data were collected emanated from the
concerted efforts of the following departments of the Bureau: Demography and Social Statistics, Real
Sector and Household Statistics, as well as Field Services & Methodology Departments. The coverage
was a complete enumeration of all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) Federal, State and
Local Government levels, including academic and research institutions.
Administrative Statistics from records of relevant subject matter Ministries, Parastatals and
Statistical Agencies were mostly used. In most instances, time series data sets spanning 2006 to 2011 are
presented. Statistics over this time frame on anual basis formed the behncmark for measuring the social as
well as econmic conditions of the citizenry of Nigeria. The themes convered in the Report include
education, health, housing conditions, households, employment, public safety (road accidents & crime),
population/vital registration, the legislature, communication, transportation, energy as well as religion.
For ease of reference, the Social Statistics Report has been split into Parts I-IV. This current Report,
Part II, contains seven chapters of the 2012 Social Statistics Report (SSR) and presents statistics on
the legislature, communications, transport, energy, religin, judiciary and tourism in Nigeria.
I would like to seize the opportunity to thank the Planning, Research and Statistics Departments
in the relevant MDAs, who have been very helpful in providing the data needs for the various components
of this Report. Agencies that were, for any reasons, unable to respond to our data request are encouraged
to assist the Bureau, by providing the required information in a timely manner in future compilations.
This is necessary for the production of timely, accurate and reliable data series that is relevant for
government policy formulation, and public evaluation of socio-econonomic development.
It is therefore my pleasure to present the Social Statistics Report 2012 to policymakers, students,
researchers, the business community, development partners, and the general public. National Bureau of
Statistics welcomes suggestions and constructive comments on any part of this document.

CHAPTER FOUR
ENERGY
Energy is the main spring of development and all the activities of other sectors
of the economy. The dimension of state development therefore is a direct
result of the level of development in the energy sector, the amount and quality
of energy generated and distributed; the effectiveness and reliability of the
distribution. It is the bedrock of any countrys development, the viability of
any countrys economy is dependent on energy and power generation,
distribution and utilization to grow optimally.

CHAPTER FIVE

RELIGION

In Nigeria, religious pilgrimages have been of great national significance

especially with reference to both government and individuals participation.
Both Christian and Muslim pilgrimages have religious and economic
implications involving huge government and prvate spending. However, the
demand for this spiritual exercise has been on the increase from various
states of the federation.
As shown in Table 5.1, the total number of seats allocated to states in 2011
was 89,059 seats compared to 85,000 in 2009 and 2010. Among states,
Kaduna had the highest number of 7771 seats while Cross Rivers had the least
(50 seats). The seats allocated to FCT rose from 3,160 in 2010 to 3,511 in
2011 while that of special interest groups increased from 971 to 1373
between 2010 and 2011.

Among states, Table 6.2b shows that while the number of judges in the states

CHAPTER SEVEN
TOURISM
The immense contribution of tourism to the overall GDP of the nations
economy cannot be over emphasized. The federal government is laying more
emphasis on the development of non-oil revenue aspect of the economy. As a
fast growing sector in Nigeria, it is therefore very important that reliable,
accurate and timely statistical data about the sector are made available for
policy formulation, planning, regulation, marketing, monitoring and
evaluation.
According to Table 7.1 which shows the distribution of international arrivals
by airports (2008 -2011) in 2008, a total of 405,105 non-Nigerians arrived
through the various airports. Muritala Mohammed International Airport,
Lagos witnessed the highest number of arrivals with a total of 222,848
followed by Aminu Kano Airport with 63,664. Port-Harcourt International
Airport witnessed the least arrivals with 1,185 males and 663 females.
In 2009 and 2010, there was a steady increase of about 60 percent males who
arrived the Muritala Mohammed Airport, Lagos followed by Nnamdi Azikiwe
Airport Abuja with about 20 percent increase in males and 27 percent
increase in females. The least was Portharcourt International Airport with 6
percent and 5.1 percent increase in males and females respectively.
The year 2011 witnessed the highest non-Nigerian arrival at Muritala
Mohammed Airport Lagos with 40,191 males and 309,657 females followed
by Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja with 50496 males and 36,914 females. As
observed earlier, Portharcourt International Airport had the least arrivals
with 11,398 males and 8,294 females respectively.
