Summary for IQ Scores

Q.1 Give one reason why this data MAY be a good fit for the normal distribution and one reason why
this data MAY NOT be a good fit for the normal distribution.
The above graphical summary shows that the data MAY be a good fit for the normal distribution
since, the spread of data shows approximate normal curve and the values of Mean and Median are
closer to each other, which indicates that the data is good fit for the normal distribution.
The above graphical summary shows that the data MAY NOT be a good fit for the normal distribution
since, box plot of data indicates the presence of outliers in the distribution of IQ Scores. Also the A-
squared statistic (Anderson Darling Normality test) indicates that the data is not good fit for the
normal distribution.

Q.2 what is the mean and standard deviation of the data?
Mean: Sum of all observations divided by the total number of observations.
Method of Solution: (Using Calculator)
Step1: Count the total number of observations
Step2: Calculate sum of all observations
Step: divide the sum obtained in step2 by sum obtained first step
Formula for Mean: Let x1, x2 ... xn, be a set of n observations, and then mean denoted by X-bar is
given by:

1 2
...
n
X
n

Mean of given data using Minitab:
From the graphical summary given above, Mean = 111.52
Standard Deviation:
Method of Solution: (Using Calculator)
Step1: Calculate mean of the given IQ scores.
Step2: Calculate sum of squares of all observations.
Step3: Use following formula to find standard deviation.
Formula for Standard Deviation:

The standard deviation of given data using Minitab:
From the graphical summary given above, SD = 9.01
Q.3 we have collected 400 samples already, what do we expect the IQ of the 401
st
sample to be?
Since, the data looks approximately normally distributed, the we can expect the IQ of 401
st
sample
to be 111.52 (Sample mean IQ for first 400 samples).
Q.4 Use Minitab to select 3 samples of size 7 from the raw data.
Answer: Following are the three samples of size 7 selected using Minitab:
We can use command as:
Calculator=> Random Data => Sample from Columns

Sample1 Sample2 Sample3
97 125 122
114 109 105
115 114 124
120 119 109
107 137 108
127 119 132
115 123 115

Q.5 How did you accomplish this in Minitab?
Step1: Put all data in first column of Minitab Worksheet. Name of this column as IQ Scores
Also prepare three other columns with names as Sample1, Sample2, and
Sample3 to store the random samples to be generated.
Step2: Use Command as:
Calculator=> Random Data => Sample from Columns
Step3: Load IQ Scores in the space for From Columns.
Put Number of rows to sample as 7. (Since we need a sample of size 7).
Load Sample1 in the space for store samples in. and press OK.
Repeat the above procedure for other two samples and store these samples in
columns Sample2 and Sample3.

Q.6 Mean and Standard deviation for above samples.
