Statement of Purpose.

‘If you want to be happy for life, love your work’, says the last sentence of a
quote by Confucius. I could not agree more, after having experienced my
undergraduate life. It helped me realize where my interests lay and thus
answering a greater question of what I wanted to do with my life eventually.
The top notch technical environment at “Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of
Information and Communication Technology” has given me an intuition for
technology, a futuristic vision for global technology -based applications. I
have studied subjects like “Introduction to Design”, “Modeling and
Simulation”, ”Computer Graphics”, “Digital Image processing”, ”Pattern
Recognition”, “Animation”, “Operating System”, “Databases” which have
provided me with a strong footing in the theoretical concepts of computer
science.
I remember the first year of my engineering when I took a course in design
by Professor Binita Desai. I created games based on simple ideas involving
Tom & Jerry and Snow White. The idea was to create games for children
which are fun and educative at the same time. The complexity of the project
lay in its interface design as it was targeted for kids. I would like to mark this
experience as my first attempt to understand ‘Interface Design’, which later
motivated me to take a course in Animation. As a part of Animation course
project I made a movie with not much technical complexity but with
simplicity and the sole aim of enjoying the entire experience. I made a stop-
motion video with help of match sticks. My aim was to make the match sticks
dance to a music. The whole experience of analyzing the music and
composing the steps and implementing the dance with the match sticks was
a memorable experience.
In my 5th semester for a course project in computer graphics, I closely
observed almost every tree on my campus. The idea was to find a fractal
formula for the different species. I was surprised to find that just by
observing a tree for long enough I could nearly guess the fractal structure for
its seed. I finally put that into work as a course project and made a fractal
tree and tried to simulate the effect of wind. This instilled in me the desire to
understand how things work at a very fundamental level.
Towards the end of my 4th year, I took a course on image processing and
pattern recognition taught by Professor Suman Mitra. I was surprised to know
the complex processes involved for a machine to understand or interpret an
image which our human eye processes at an unbelievable pace. It was then
that I appreciated the importance of pattern recognition. I was amazed by
the fact that when a baby looks around, it just sees colors and not people or
objects. All the baby sees is just colors changing. Later I took a face
recognition research project in which I researched different ways of
recognizing a face, and devised my own techniques to process an image
which was a painstaking effort of 2 months. After all the effort I put in, the
machine was able to recognize the picture and differentiate between faces.
The whole experience gave me a sense of achievement.
During my undergraduate thesis work, I was offered an internship at
UTV Toons, one of India’s leading animation lab. This particular experience
not just strengthened my skills in some of the very useful software such
as, Maya but also gave me a firsthand experience of how things function in
an entertainment industry. I worked on the animation pipeline which
streamlines work in the industry (It is written in MEL, scripting language only
used by Maya). I converted the entire pipeline with python as source
language so that it could now accommodate people using different software
such as Adobe Photoshop or Aftereffects etc. My undergraduate project work
at UTV toons helped me understand what I eventually would want to do in
life.
After my under graduation, I was offered a Job to work with Hewlett Packard
India private Ltd in Bangalore. I was given a rigorous training in Networking
concepts and operating systems. I worked with Embedded Switch Software
Team of Hp-procurve Networking (R&D). During this period, I was involved in
a special project which aimed at fulfilling special requirements of Microsoft
and actively took part towards design and implantation for new type of
interfaces for upcoming products. Later I specialized myself in Extjs(external
JavaScript) to solely accomplish the task of designing and implementing a
pictorial representation of switch(named BOB{back of box}). My design
enabled the Network administrators to have a glance at the overall switch
status without going to its physical location. It was greatly appreciated and
gained overwhelming response from the customer. The present job has also
helped me develop a through insight into project-handling, but the industry
environment that I am currently in cannot support my desire for research.
These multifarious experiences – all the crest and troughs, all
the skies and gray clouds have shaped me into the person I am today. I am
person with technical aptitude and having a passion for research. I believe as
much in my dreams as in reality. These experiences have instilled in me a
penchant for analysis and creative problem –solving skills. I firmly believe
that they have contributed in different ways towards making me a person
who has the drive and patience to weather the rigors of graduate studies and
complete graduate studies successfully.
During my investigating for suitable courses, I found that the MS
program in -------------- Engineering at -------------------university, Involves in
exposure to cutting edge technology and advanced research fueled with
faculty being highly qualified across various disciplines. Thus I believe, it will
be the right place to pursue my career goals for creating innovative
technologies and relinquishing my thirst for research and intern contributing
to specific field.
I feel the MS in ---------------- at your university will be the most
logical extension of my academic pursuits and major step in achieving my
objectives. Having gained a considerable width in my education at Dhirubhai
Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology and more
than 1.5 years of Industrial experience with Hewlett-Packard, a reputed
multinational technology company, along with unshakable motivation,
painstaking thoroughness, perseverance, as well as the ability to work
independently or in a group and excel in my selected field of interest. I
believe that I deserve a chance to strive for academic excellence and add
value to your institution by contributing my share to your research
community.
