Manufacturing a
Middle Class with
Quality Jobs
What does deindustrialization mean? To cities
like Detroit, it has meant depopulation, declining
public revenue, and lost jobs.
But the economic threats that have hurt Detroit
are present in other great American cities. Thats
why a plan to rebuild Americas manufacturing
sectorthe pillar of our middle classis key to
building our economy in the future.
Join our panel as we explore a national
manufacturing strategy and how one could
create an economy that benefits
all Americans.

Saturday, June 19 11 AM
Featuring Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI)

Get your dancing shoes ready and watch the stars!

Were taking over the Michigan Science Center for a real Motown-style dance party.
The science center will also have its planetarium open for stargazing.
Shuttle buses will be provided. Stop by the AAM booth for details and drink tickets.

@KeepItMadeInUSA

ere thrilled to welcome you to Detroit for our

ninth Netroots Nation! You may have heard
about Detroit in the news. You probably heard
about the awful decisions made by the emergency manager,
or the city beginning to cut off water to 150,000 residents.
You probably saw photos of abandoned buildings and
neighborhoods. The media loves that storyline.
But were hoping you get a chance to see the other side of
Detroit this weekend. Were in a newly renovated section
of the COBO Center, and our special events are in some
fantastic local venues. But most importantly, weve got speakers throughout our agenda who can testify to the innovation
and dedication of the activists who live, work, and play
in Detroit. They can tell you their stories of how they are
fighting to save the city they love.
Were particularly proud that this year, 61 percent of our
speakers are women, and 53 percent are people of color.
In addition, 42 percent of our panels came from first-time
submitters. We feel its just as important to consider which
voices are elevated as whats being said.

We spent a lot of time thinking about what we wanted to

highlight this year, among many great choices:
Well be covering the most current progressive fights and
the newest progressive ideas, from using the post office for
simple banking functions to cutting-edge campaigning thatll
take us through the next election cycle.
Were breaking ground on new issues that are under the
radar or just emerging in the broader progressive movement,
like the role of suspensions in the school-to-prison pipeline
or burgeoning transgender activism.
Finally, were hosting discussions that can only happen at
Netroots Nation. Just a few of the ones Im most excited
about include a panel on black feminism, another session
on building racially diverse movements, and one that unveils
research about the real experience of working in politics.
Whether this is your first Netroots Nation or your ninth,
I think youll love the agenda weve put together. There are
a lot of choices but I feel pretty strongly that there arent
any bad ones.
Just make sure that you catch that Motown spirit to sustain
you the rest of the year.

FRIDAY, 4:30 P.M.

Screening: 1971
On March 8, 1971 eight ordinary citizens broke into an FBI office in
Media, PA, took hundreds of secret files, and shared them with the
public. In doing so, they uncovered the FBIs vast and illegal regime of
spying and intimidation of Americans exercising their First Amendment
rights. Mailed anonymously, the documents started to show up in
newsrooms. The heist yielded a trove of damning evidence that proved
the FBI was deliberately working to intimidate civil rights activists
and Americans nonviolently protesting the Vietnam War. For the first
time, the members of the Citizens Commission have decided to come
forward and speak out about their actions. 1971 is their story.
FRIDAY, 6:30 P.M.

Screening: Vincent Who? and Discussion of Race in Detroit

In 1982, at the height of anti-Japanese sentiments, Vincent Chin was
murdered in Detroit by two white auto workers who said, its because
of you mother** that were out of work. When the judge fined the killers a mere $3,000 and three years probation, Asian Americans around
the country galvanized to form a real movement. This documentary
features interviews with the key players at the time, as well as a whole
new generation of activists. Vincent Who? asks how far Asian Americans
have come since then and how far we have yet to go. After the screening,
a local panel of social justice activists will discuss the nature of race
relations in Detroit and how the city can move forward to build broader
multi-ethnic coalitions.

Only the Jester Speaks the Truth

The Left is supposed to be funnier than the Right, damn it. So why do
we so often sound in public like were stiltedly reading from a non-profit
grant proposal? This panel hopes to explore humors unparalleled
ability to deliver challenging information to the public, as well as mold
and shift perspectives. Well have some of the folks who have most
effectively used comedy as an organizing and advocacy tool, whether
for a one-time campaign or an ongoing media project. That includes
comedians, offline organizers, online media-makers, and anyone who
could use comedy to say whats otherwise impossible. (Read: anyone.)

Atlas Riffed: A Live-Riffing Of Atlas Shrugged Part Two

In the style of Mystery Science Theater 3000, RiffTrax, and Cinematic
Titanic, Laughing Liberally comedians Josh Bolotsky and Matthew
Filipowicz will spend one memorable evening performing Atlas Riffed,
a live, second-by-second running commentary on the middle chapter of
the notoriously awful film trilogy of Ayn Rands libertarian manifesto,
Atlas Shrugged: Part Two. Were going to make one of the worst films
ever made actually fun to watch and slowly but surely advance our
covert crypto-communist agenda on an unsuspecting public.

The 1% Courts: How the Justice System Is Being Closed

Off to Ordinary Americans
In recent years, the Supreme Court has issued a series of decisions
making it harder for Americans to get into court and hold corporate
wrongdoers accountable. Rather than providing an even playing field,
our courts increasingly exacerbate inequalities. By mid-July, the Court
will reach more monumental decisions, including Harris v. Quinn,
which has been called an existential threat to labor. Recent decisions
are the result not only of a decades-long campaign by the Chamber
of Commerce and its allies, but also a judiciary dominated by judges
with corporate law and prosecutorial backgrounds. This panel will
explore the roots of these decisions, how to mobilize to counter bad
decisions and spur more good ones, and how to build a judiciary that
better understands the struggles of everyday Americans.
2020 War Room: Inside the Secret Plan to Beat GOP
Gerrymandering
Democrats won 1.7 million more votes, but the GOP won the majority
in Congress. Youve heard that story before. Join us for an inside
look at the Democratic strategy to fight back. Legislators, campaign
strategists, and nationally renowned redistricting experts will walk
us through how Democrats can use cutting-edge data and modeling,
strong progressive messaging, and old-fashioned shoe leather to fight
back against GOP gerrymandering today and turn the tables on
Republicans in 2020.
48217: What One of the Countrys Most Polluted Zip Codes
Can Teach Us about Environmental and Digital Justice
With only 8,200 residents, southeast Michigans 48217 is sandwiched
between I-75 and giant industrial polluters. Smokestacks billow above
schoolyards in River Rouge, MI, where more than 1.6 million pounds
of hazardous chemicals are released into the community every year.
The zip is part of Wayne County, which has the highest number of
pediatric asthma cases in the state, combined with the highest state
population of those living in poverty. Clean air and water violations
abound, coupled with barriers to affordable cyberspace, threatening
many residents ability to survive in a digital age. Learn about the
interplay between environmental and digital justice in one community,
from fighting for equal access to the internet, launching community
media labs, and improving air quality.
Agitating for Change: Russian Media and the Thirst
for Information
Access to information is crucial for an informed and democratic society.
Obtaining important government information is getting more difficult
in Russia, where the state is beginning to clamp down on media in the
wake of the turmoil in Ukraine. The professional and citizen journalists
there face common enemiescorporate special interests with unending
financial resources, procedural hurdles, and ever-changing political
climates. To combat this, how are journalists in Russia leveraging social
media and other online tools for action? What lessons can be gleaned
from efforts in the US and other countries around the world? And how
can we work together to support the work of our global progressive allies?
Aint I an Organizer? How Women of Color are Central
to the Future of Feminist Activism
Coined by Kimberl Crenshaw 15 years ago, the term intersectionality
has become a mainstay in discussions of successful feminist activism.
Yet many publications, campaigns, and organizations still struggle to
incorporate a feminist lens in their work, let alone center women of
color in their gender analysis and activism. What does a truly cohesive,
progressive, and anti-racist movement for gender equality look like in
2014? How can we create a broad-based progressive movement that
centers the experiences of women of color and galvanizes the base
successfully? Panelists will explore the concept of an intersectional
approach to gender and identity by relaying stories and data from their
own political organizing work in a range of fields including education,
media, health, and wellness.

Analyzing Ourselves: New Research on the Experience

of Working in Politics
As a movement, weve used data, analytics, and research to optimize
nearly every outward-facing aspect of campaigns. Now were turning
the microscope on ourselves. What salary inequalities exist within the
world of politics, and what should we do about it? Is there bias in who
gets hired for particular roles? Are microaggressions creating a hostile
work environment that causes disproportionate numbers of women and
people of color to turn away from politics as a career? This panel will
present quantitative and qualitative research about what its like to work
in the progressive movement. We will discuss what the numbers mean,
what we can do about them, and what further research is needed.
Ask a Sista: Black Women Muse on Politics, Policy,
Pop Culture and Scholarship
This session was a big hit in 2011, 2012, and 2013, with a panel of
progressive Sistas who take no prisoners and give you the critical,
political analysis you deserve. Our point of departure is that AfricanAmerican women make up two-thirds of the black Democratic
voting bloc and have exercised their votes judiciously in both 2008
and 2012. Their votes are consistent but their programs are routinely
underfunded and voices disproportionately unheard. How can we
expect the party to flourish without understanding this key voting bloc
and their major influence in American culture? This panel session
will shed light on African-American progressive women and their
views on politics, policy, pop culture, and scholarship to address how
the Democratic party can mobilize them for 2016 and beyond.
Back to Basics: Democratic Politics in an Era of Divided
Government
The session will explore what the current and near-term equities are in
Washington and what that means for progressive goals. This will include
political and substantive reviews of the House and Senate, discussion
of goals such as immigration reform and climate change mitigation and
where they stand, and a candid conversation about how the pragmatic
progressive should strategize for the next few years vis-a-vis Washington.
Which issues can be advanced in Washington? On which issues is defense
crucial for now? Which issues are best left for state-based fights for the
time being? Which are political, legal, or both? The next two election
cycles will be challenging, and in between a lot can happen (good and
bad). Lets survey where we are, where we need to go, and what we can
do with some difficult cards (but a lot of talent) on the table.
Beyond Livable Wage: Creative Strategies to Get to the
Root of Wealth Inequality
Around the country, progressives are pushing for much-needed increases
in the minimum wage toward a more realistic livable wage. However,
what else can we do to change the debate to focus on some of the root
causes of inequality? From the exploitative practices of a company
like Walmart to the money big corporations pull out of state and local
treasuries, the practices of the biggest corporations are directly driving
median wages down and concentrating wealth. Our panel will look at
some strategies to highlight these practices and empower progressives
to fight back.
Beyond the A/B Test: Building Better Fundraising Tests
with Behavioral Science
While A/B optimization of emails and landing pages has been widely
adopted by progressive organizations and candidates, often these tests
compare very different creative rather than use behavioral science insights
to drive research questions. This panel will feature three progressive
organizations leading the way. ActBlue will discuss a series of tests that
show how organizations can use behavioral economics insights to shape
the choice sets of suggested donation amounts to maximize landing page
performance. ProgressNow will present the results of a multi-millionperson email test that illustrate the impact of anchors and social norms
in shaping donor behavior. And the DNCs digital team will describe
how foot in the door non-fundraising asks can increase donations.

PANEL DESCRIPTIONS

Bro-Choice? Where Do Men Fit in the Reproductive

Justice Movement?
Men have shown up as allies for women in politics since suffrage, but
issues of reproductive, sexual, and family health continue to be seen
as primarily the burden and responsibility of women. The limits of
this frame have become apparent: the war on women frame leaves
out the LGBTQ community, lacks a racial justice analysis, and most
importantly, reifies outdated ideas about gender. Its time to rethink our
frame and engage mennot as allies, but as stakeholders, whose sexual
health, bodily autonomy, and ability to form and care for their families
is deeply impacted by the same systems of reproductive oppression.
Building the Tech for the Movement: How We Could
(and Should) Use Open Source Technology to Win
While technological innovations like email lists, online petitions, online
call tools, and blogging platforms have greatly enhanced our organizing
ability, many are proprietary, expensive, or limited in scope. Lets start
talking about how we could (and should) innovate and collaborate on
technology thats open source and will make a huge difference in the
progressive movement. How do we make sure were building tools that
are open source so we can all use them, build on them, and improve
them? How do we connect developers with non-super-techie progressives
to keep innovating? Where can technology help solve some of the policy
and social challenges we face?
Call to Action: Measurable Change in the Digital Space
Organizations are often clear about goals and strategic focus for the
change they hope to achieveuntil it comes to the digital platform.

Challenging the Dramatic Under-Representation of
Women and People of Color in Political Office
What would it look like if the people who hold political power actually
reflected the communities they are elected to serve? What structural
barriers prevent us from having elected leadership that reflects the full
range and strength of our diversity? This panel will look at how systemic
barriers like money in politics and negative gate-keeping networks
operate to keep women and people of color from elected office. The

under-representation of these groups undermines our democracy and

contorts policy agendas but has rarely been directly targeted for structural
change. This panel will explore what it would look like to directly attack

building a better future.
Combating Online Hate, Bigotry, and Discrimination
A convergence of activists, social media companies, and victims of hate
are collaborating to figure out the best way to protect communities from
vitriol that turns from hate speech to mobilized campaigns. While the
internet has revolutionized progressive change, it has also rallied others
to encourage bigotry, brutal killings, mass protests against a communitys
presence, and violence based on hate. This online fear-mongering has
become increasingly organized and is particularly evident in efforts
targeted at vulnerable communities such as immigrants, Muslims, women
who speak up about their rights and abuses, LGBT individuals, and
African Americans. This panel sheds light on how online hate translates
to inequality, disenfranchisement, and violence for innocent Americans
across the countryand what you can do to change the tides.
Common Core: A View from the Middle
The Common Core State Standardsexpectations of what children
should know and be able to do by the conclusion of each school year
have been adopted by 40 states and DC because CCSS has the potential
to provide a quality education to students regardless of socioeconomic
status. Student achievement and a quality education for all students
cannot be a partisan issue. But the success of CCSS hinges upon how
well each state implements the standards. Some states are working with
all stakeholders and providing the resources for teachers to do it well
and other states just arent.
The Corporate Takeover of Our Neighborhood Public Schools:
A Detroit Case Study
This session will utilize key findings and data that have been learned by
observing the flawed attempts to corporatize Michigans most vulnerable
and struggling schools. It will also examine alternatives that can be
adopted to set students and districts up for success.

Creating a Beloved Community: Visionaries for an

Inclusive Detroit
Many reports about Detroit focus on decrepit houses and factories,
constructing a narrative of ruin porn that promotes a titillating mix
of nostalgia and dismay. Recently the Governor insinuated that the real
problem with Detroit is the people who live in it, suggesting that attracting high-tech workers (read: non-African-Americans) would guarantee
rebirth. Our panelists are more modest and ambitious in striving to
create a liveable, sustainable, post-industrial city with the people already
here. They base their projects in Detroits neighborhoods, drawing upon
their experience of life in a seriously deprived environment, materially
speaking. They strategize about food justice and affordable utilities;
they care for the needy; they sponsor creative projects for the young.
Come learn how you can be a progressive ally for Detroit.
Daring to Internet While Female
Most women have experienced some kind of online harassment, bullying, or threats because of what they say or simply because they dare to
be female while using the internet. Its a shared experience that leaves
many discouraged, afraid, or silenced. Since the law hasnt caught up
to technology and the anonymity of the internet offers protection to
offenders, its up to us to ensure that women can have successful
professional and personal online personas while still feeling safe.
Detroit, Rocked City: How the Bankruptcy Led to
Retirement Attacks that Could Spread Nationwide
Join us for a discussion on one of the biggest factors in income inequality:
the right-wing assault on retirement security. Learn about the Detroit
bankruptcy and what it means for the economic security of public service
workers nationwide. Well examine how the attacks on pensions, Wall

And well keep it real with a retired Detroit city worker whos now up
a creek without the paddle hes been promised, a Wall Street watchdog
who has been investigating Wall Streets favorite pension gutter, and an
expert on the Detroit bankruptcy and the implications it will have for
workers and retirees across the country.
Does God Love Women Whove Had Abortions?
For too long the abortion debate has been far removed from thoughtful,
or even respectful, conversation on the real lives and experiences of
women. The tidal wave of overly intrusive and harmful anti-abortion
legislation is often justified by religion, so much so that one might assume that to be religious is to be anti-choiceand conversely, that one
cannot be both a person of faith and a supporter of abortion access.
But the truth is, just like womens own lives, the role religion plays in
reproductive health and rights is complex, nuanced, and deserves to be
heard. This panel is for anyone interested in the intersection between
abortion access and spirituality.
Domestic Workers: Leaders for a New Economy
Women are supposed to lean in to have it all; but how, when womens
work is undervalued and underpaid? Join us to find out how our movement can support a new womens economic agenda that will move us
toward an economic system that values all womens contributions, from
high-powered CEOs to domestic workers. Nation-wide, domestic workers
have been leading the fight for new labor protections for women and

families. In 2013, domestic workers saw victories at the federal level,

with minimum wage and overtime protections for home care workers,
and in the states, with Bills of Rights wins in California and Hawaii.
How can we turn these victories into a national movement with the
power to change the way we value womens work?
Ending Voter Suppression and Building Progressive Leadership in Congress: Why DC Statehood Matters for Liberals
For the first time in 20 years, there is a bill before Congress to grant
statehood to Washington, DC, a majority-black city with a population
greater than that of Vermont or Wyoming. The proposed legislation
preserves the Constitutionally-mandated federal district but restores
basic democracy to DCs 646,000 citizens, who pay local and federal
taxes, fight and die in U.S. wars, and fulfill civic obligations, yet are denied
their right to vote at the federal level and have limited control over local
legislative and budgetary affairs. This session will explore the relationship
between the DC statehood and black political empowerment movements
since the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Well discuss the role of voting
representation for DC in moving progressive legislation through a
divided Congress and debate different perspectives and strategies for
effectively moving forward on achieving statehood.
The Ethics of Storytelling
Sharing stories can strengthen personal bonds, help people feel less alone,
and generate social respect. But sharing stories can also come with great
personal and professional risks. In todays fast moving media, some
stories get co-opted and moved away from the storysharer being at the
center of the storytelling process. How do we navigate sharing personal
stories, which are so intrinsic to culture change, with the complexities
of media landscape? This panel will discuss ethical storysharing and
advocacy from real, lived experiences of those working at the forefront
of culture change in underrepresented, sometimes stigmatized groups.
The Ever-Evolving Ad Tech and Targeting World:
What to Look for in 2014 and Beyond
From Facebooks new sign up button to Pandoras musical taste targeting

our campaign messages are constantly changing. This panel will bring
in digital experts and representatives from various tech platforms to talk
about whats new and whats working in the digital media space.
Everything You Need to Know to Run a Progressive Startup

and we want to share those challenges and strategies with you.
Expanding Online Voter Registration
Our antiquated voter registration systems present a key barrier to youth
participation. The good news is there is some momentum for updating
our voting systems. By almost every measure, online voter registration
was a success in 2012. In just one month before the voter registration
deadline, 839,297 Californians registered to vote or updated their voter
registration online. This panel will share some of the lessons learned in
California with online voter registration implementation and how to
maximize its effectiveness to boost participation.

Fighting for Democratic Practices after an Emergency

Manager Takeover in Michigan: Report from the Trenches
Since taking office in 2010, Gov. Rick Snyder has installed 10 so-called
emergency managers (EMs) to take the place of elected mayors, city
councils, and school boards. In 2011 Snyder and the GOP legislature
broadened the powers of EMs and essentially replaced local democracy
with their appointees. In 2012, Michigan voters rejected Snyders version
of the law, but the legislature ignored the vote and passed an identical
law. The majority of those deprived of representation lives in cities
where people of color are a majority of the population. Despite this
anti-democratic takeover, residents and elected officials keep resisting
this abrogation of the rule of law. This panel will feature activists from
across Michigan who struggle to regain their citys autonomy.
Fighting for Truth and Universal Healthcare
Obamacare has finally been fully implemented, but the fight to reform
our healthcare system has a long way to go. Come hear detailed analysis
of how we got here, what challenges we currently face, and what remains
to be done.
Fighting for Voting Rights in the 21st Century
This year were fighting for voting rights on both the federal and local
levels. A new bill updating the VRA is moving through Congress, and
state voting rights activists are working to modernize elections or combat
restrictive bills. However, there are two key components we must address
to ensure the future of voting rights: felony disenfranchisement and
youth engagement. Last year, the New York Times estimated that while
black turnout reached record numbers, it was still suppressed due to
the sheer amount of African American citizens who couldnt vote
because of a prior felony conviction. Nationally 4.4 million citizens
who are no longer incarcerated are blocked from the ballot box due
to similar laws. Further, the youth vote is under attack in states like
North Carolina and Florida. This panel addresses what needs to be
done to protect these voters and encourage turnout.
A Fresh Perspective: Lessons From a Crazy Congress
From endless Obamacare repeal votes to the IRS scandal to the
disgusting politicization of Benghazi, the 113th Congress has been
a sight to behold. Hear from two progressive Members of Congress
serving their first term on how they persevered to move the ball forward
on progressive issues despite a conservative majority bent on picking
useless political fights. Join us for an inside look at how progressives are
fighting the good fight in this House of Representativesand what it
will take to break through and win on important issues.
From Underdog to Top Dog: Organizing for Impact
While Small and Mighty
Listen, we know everyone wants to nerd out about list sizes, email tests,
and unsubscribe rates. And lets be honest: a lot of the assumptions
about successful online organizing focus heavily on growing massive
lists. But what if your organization doesnt have 8 million membersor
even 8,000? What if you dont have resources to run unlimited tests?
Dont fret! Even if youre a small dog, you can still hunt. Hear from
organizers who have run campaigns with small petitions, moved nimbly
with a staff of three, and built connections that grew networked power
between online and offline groups.
Headline Risk and Social Cost: Hitting the 1% Where it Hurts
Headline risk remains one of the largest realms where progressives can
force change on the masters of the universe. This session will examine
the assets society has against the 1%, and how we can create a true social
cost to both the 1% and their enablers. We will also examine what it looks
like when that leverage is brought to bearbeyond simply targeting
election cycles.

and Why Were so Hungry (for Change)
Detroit natives can easily point to any number of challenges to food
security in their community. Whether its the lack of fresh and affordable options or the insidious targeting of our kids by fast food outfits,
the healthy meal is under attack. This problem isnt unique to Detroit:
these are problems facing communities of color and children across the

lessons you can use in your own work, and further weave us together
as a community of food activists.
Innovative Field Strategy: How Social Network Theory
and Visualization Technology Can Achieve 2% Flake Rates
Over the past few cycles, weve seen the importance of innovative field
programs in successful campaigns. The most effective campaigns have
understood the increasing synchronicity of digital and field as an everincreasing percentage of the electorate engages meaningfully online.
The best campaigns have utilized lessons learned from Social Network
Theory, the analysis of how people interact in the context of real life
social networks, and applied them with incredible results. This session
will begin with an overview of applicable tenets of Social Network Theory
and will highlight innovative campaigns of the last cycle. Learn about
the recruitment and confirmation system developed by McAuliffe Fairfax
County Regional Field Director Colin Hicks that allowed his team to
shatter goals and post an incredible 2% flake rate during GOTV.
Iran: Diplomacy or War?
This panel will discuss the Obama administrations effort to achieve a
diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear issue, with attention to recent
progressive grassroots successes in promoting non-military options in
the face of opposition by Congressional hawks.
A Labor of Love: How the American Labor Movement
is Securing LGBT Equality
There are few alliances that have been as productive as that of the labor
and LGBT movements. Even before the rise of large national LGBT
organizations, the American labor movement worked to attain LGBT
equality. Bayard Rustin and Harry Hay were trade union members;
Harvey Milk was elected with the support of unions; and the negotiating
table has been one of the most effective ways to obtain equal benefits
and access to healthcare. What can be learned from this alliance? And
how did cooperation between movements contribute to changes for
LGBT Americans?

Low-Wage Workers Went on Strike. Now What?

More and more low-wage workers have started organizing and have gone
on strike in the last few years. People who would never have considered
themselves labor activists are now protesting outside their local Walmart
or clicking like on the Presidents call for a higher minimum wage.
As alt-labor movements grow up, how do we measure their success?
What does winning look like for these workers and their communities?
Manufacturing a Middle Class with Quality Jobs
Rebuilding our manufacturing base is the key to building a strong
economy for the future and putting millions of people back to work in
good middle class jobs. Manufacturing has long been the backbone of
our economy, and over the past 30 years as companies have moved our
factories overseas, we have seen economic turmoil and an increase in the
rich/poor gap. In 2013, Senate Democrats unveiled a strategy designed
to kick start the manufacturing sector and create more manufacturing
jobs in the US. The panel will discuss the impact this could have on
income inequality and whether this strategy can stabilize the middle class.
Marijuana Arrests: The Gateway to Mass Incarceration
Every 48 seconds someone is arrested for marijuana possession in the
United States. Most of these arrests are of people of color, despite the
fact that white people use and sell marijuana at higher rates. Well explore
how the drug war and biased policing practices fuel marijuana arrests
and, in turn, mass incarceration. In New York City, communities are
organizing to end these arrests and reverse the collateral consequences
haunting the nearly half a million New Yorkers now living with criminal
records. We approach our work from an explicit racial justice perspective
to message our campaign, build leadership of impacted communities,
and pass innovative policies and laws to end racist marijuana arrests.
Money in Politics: Candidate Forum
Join us for a discussion on money in politics in the context of the 2014
election, as both a movement building exercise and opportunity to raise
awareness of the candidates running on the issue. Candidates on the
panel will discuss fundraising challenges that come up while running
on the premise of getting money out of politics, as well as the pros and
cons of fixing this critical issue. Audience members will hear what these
candidates would do to advance this issue.
Mothers of Murdered Children: Moving from Grief to Action
We know the names of Trayvon Martin, Hadiya Pendleton, and Jordan
Davis, but what of the thousand of children murdered every day in
Americas cities and towns? This session will bring to life how Detroit
mothers whove lost children to violence are channeling their grief
to propose policy changes, promote increased funding, and demand
attention from mayors, school board officials, and others to make a
differenceand make sure other families dont face these same tragedies. In addition to families with first-hand experience, attendees will
hear from policy staffers on how to advocate most effectively with city
and county municipalities.
Movements as Models: What the History of Organizing
Can Teach Todays Organizers
From the pages of the New York Times to Politico controversies, people
are talking about the role of public intellectuals in contemporary life.
Missing from much of this discussion has been what role intellectuals
should have in collaborating with activists, and what contribution the
history of the black freedom movement should make today. This panel
brings together three black scholars who work on race and rights in
conversation with the Netroots community. As organizing efforts like
North Carolinas Moral Mondays and Floridas Dream Defenders have
invoked the history of black struggle in their contemporary movements,
this panel will ask scholars what lessons activists today can learn from this
history of past movements for racial justice.

what weve learned about turning petitions into winning campaigns and
developing progressive leadership at scale. Well also have a conversation
about opportunities and challenges with petition-based distributed

New Frontiers in Voter Contact: How Open APIs, Mobile,
and Real-time Data Collection are Changing Field Forever
A new wave of technology startups is leveraging an increasingly open
progressive data ecosystem to build tools that enable campaigns and
organizations to make faster, better, more responsive decisions. Imagine
a voter receiving a fundraising email immediately after a contact at
the door. Or a postcard arriving in your mailbox with a personalized
GOTV message from a Facebook friend. Progressive innovators like
Organizer, Amicus, and the organizers of the Open Supporter Data
Interface (OSDI) are giving progressives an edge by enabling integrated,
targeted, data-driven campaigns. Learn how these technologies are
enabling leading unions and committees to take their tech to the next
level, and contribute your ideas for the future of voter contact.
Not Just Detroit: How to Fight Back Against Wall Street
and Predatory Municipal Finance
Last summer, Wall Street banks were poised to jump to the front of
the line in the Detroit bankruptcy. The city was going to have to slash
pensions and sell off assets to pay hundreds of millions in bank fees.
After a concerted campaign that included in-depth research, actions,
and litigation, the bankruptcy court dramatically reduced the amount
the city would pay big banks by hundreds of millions of dollars, freeing
up much-needed cash to invest back into Detroit. Panelists will talk
about this ongoing fight, and organizers from the Chicago Teachers
Union will talk about how they campaigned against predatory financing
deals to rally support during their strike and to fight school closings.
NSA Surveillance Reform: Pitfalls and Opportunities
A recent campaign in Europe calls on individuals to vote for [their]
digital rights. However, no such movement has caught on in the US,
despite the upcoming election cycle. Rallies and eventsincluding the
Rally to End Mass Surveillance and the Day We Fight Backhave
demonstrated wide support for surveillance reform. By educating the
public about surveillance issues, digital rights activists can ensure voters
understand where their elected leaders stand on defending our privacy
and Constitutional rights. This panel will discuss the political environment
around surveillance reform, including grassroots engagement and the
potential for leadership on the issues. Well conclude with a discussion of
the ongoing challenges faced in communicating to the public audience
on the so-called balance between national security and civil liberties.
Opening the Bedroom Door: Ask a Progressive Sexpert

equality to trans healthcare, we miss the connections between some of
the most important political issues we face and whats going on in
our own bedrooms. So bring your burning questions on everything
from revolutionary kink to STI etiquette to gender dynamics in queer
relationships: our panel of sexperts (from the academic, medical, and
activist worlds) is ready to boldly go where few have gone before.

The Organizing Edge: Online Predictions for the 2016 Elections

What propelled progressive candidates to victory in 2008 and 2012 wont
be enough to keep us there in 2016. If we rested on our laurels in 2008,
marveling at the smarts that powered our victory, Republicans would
have been close to matching us (or perhaps even beating us) in 2012.
Weve managed to stay ahead through improvement, innovation, and
forward momentum. We can mock the GOPs Parra Bellum efforts, but
theyll be better in 2016so we must be too. This panel brings together
experts in technology, development, communications, and fundraising
to ask: Whats in store? And what do we need to do before 2016?
Organizing the South: The Times They Are A-Changing
How can progressives continue to transform the social and political
landscape of the South? By making sure workers have a voice on the
job, electing representatives who care about poverty and womens
rights, and ultimately, organizing the working class into a broad, diverse
movement for economic and social justice. From Moral Mondays and
Fast Food strikes to Volkswagon auto workers in Chattanooga seeking
a voice on the job, exciting things are happening in the South.
Pope is Dope: How to Message Like a Gladiator and Win
Narrative strategy and messaging arent new to television or pop culture,
but Shonda Rhimes Scandal has drawn attention to the role of crisis
communications and strategic messaging in Beltway politics. Olivia Pope
and her team of gladiators in suits use crisis management to take on
some of the most contentious political issues of our time like abortion,
sex work, surveillance, and corruption. In the battle for Beltway capital
and influence, the tools we use to frame our issues determine which
policies will triumph and which will fail. Learn from real-life gladiators
how to use strategic messaging, narrative strategy, and storytelling to win
progressive policy change at the local, state, and national levels.
Progressive National Security in 2014 and Beyond
National security played an unusually strong role in the 2012 elections,
with Barack Obama ranked as one of the most effective national security
presidents in recent memory. With the memory of the Bin Laden killing
fading, tensions with Russia on the rise, continued tragedy in Syria,
controversy around drones and NSA spying, and negotiations with Iran
over its nuclear program ongoing, what role will national security play
in the 2014 elections and beyond? Can the Democrats remain strong on
national security, or will Republicans regain their traditional mantle as
the party most able to protect the United States? Will Obama be able to
finally close Guantanamo? And are we on the verge of a new Cold War
with Russia?
Progressives and the Midterms: Making Smart Investments
to Build Progressive Power in 2014 and Beyond
What are the smartest plays that progressives can make in the upcoming
mid-term elections? What are they key issues that progressives should
be talking about? Join us for a lively discussion on building progressive
power on Election Day and beyond.
A Public Option for Simple Banking for Underserved
Communities
Over 68 million Americans have little or no access to traditional financial
services. Banks have abandoned low-income communities, turning them
over to predatory businesses like payday lenders, check-cashing stores,
and pawn shops. Reports show this costs the poor more than $2,400 a
year in interest and fees. We can do better by creating a public option
for simple banking servicesATM access, money transfers, and small
loans. We can run these services through the Post Office, as is done in
many other countries, providing needed postal revenue, increasing access,
and saving the poor billions. This simple maneuver would provide multiple
benefits: modernizing our payment system, protecting against fraud,
boosting the economy, and even ending recessions. This panel will
examine the potential benefits of public options for banking, giving
abandoned communities much-needed access to financial services.

Q&A with Howard Dean: 10 Years Since the Campaign

Ten years after the groundbreaking Dean campaign, one of the 22-yearold kids who showed up in Vermont to help the long-shot Governor
turn the primary race upside down and change the Democratic Party
for good will interview the former Governor about that race and the
lasting impact the campaign caused on organizing.
Reclaiming the Promise of Public Education
Momentum is building across the country to reclaim the promise of
public education. Decades of top-down edicts, privatization schemes,
polarization and austerity measures have taken their toll. Well discuss
ways community groups, unions, students, and parents are coming together with a progressive vision for what our schools can and should be.
Reimagining the Possible: Organizing for Long-Term,
Structural Transformation
The far right has a clear, powerful vision for the future of our country
and of Michigan. Do we? For decades, the 1% has been advancing a
long-term agenda for privatization, inequality, and voter disenfranchisement. Nowhere are the results of that agenda as clear as they are in
Michigan and Detroit. For progressives to reclaim and rebuild this state
and our nation, well need to match the strategic depth of the corporate
right. Well need to move from only addressing immediate crises in our
communities to addressing the structures and landscape on which these
crises are predicated. That means planning for the next 20-40 years even
while we plan for the next 1-2. This panel will engage activists and leaders in Michigan in a discussion about the lefts long-term vision for the
state, and how taking the long view impacts our practice and strategy.
Religious Exemptions: The Next Frontier for Progressive Battles
Across the country, the religious right is losing the moral battles for
LGBTQ equality, reproductive justice, and workers rights. So why are
progressives losing so many legal and legislative battles? The answer is
religious exemptions, the tactic being used by right-wing political forces
to chip away at legal protections for LGBTQ individuals, women, and
workers. This panel will dig into how these exemptions are being used,
how right-wing groups are redefining religious liberty to push an
extremist agenda, what the implications of the exemptions are at the
state and federal level, and how progressives can use winning messaging
to reclaim the moderate middle being targeted by these exemptions.
The Rise of Janet Yellen: Why the Fed Matters, and
How Progressives Fought for the First Female Chair of
the Federal Reserve
The Federal Reserve wields great economic power; it is often said that
the Chairman of the Federal Reserve is the second most powerful person
in America. In 2013, a ragtag coalition came together to fight for economic
justice and work on an unprecedented campaign: to influence who would
become the Chair of the Federal Reserve. Now, the challenge is how
to work with the new leadership of the Federal Reserve to promote a
progressive economic agenda. Well look at how the successful effort
to block Larry Summers and elevate Janet Yellen was different from
our usual campaigns. Well explore what made it successful and how to
apply those strategies to other campaigns. And well examine why the
Federal Reserve is worthy of such attention, how this victory will affect
fights going forward, and forecast where Yellens historic appointment
will take the economy.
Running Digital Campaigns: Whats Changed and Whats
Still Working?
This is the 10-year anniversary of Howard Deans revolutionary digital
campaign. Despite the rise of Facebook, Twitter, and mobile campaigning over the past decade, email remains the primary way that we drive
action and raise money online. Hear from veterans in the Democratic
digital space about whats working, whats changed, and what to look
for in 2014 and 2016.

Solutions, Not Suspensions: This is How We Close the

School-to-Prison Pipeline
Students, parents, and educators across the country are organizing
to change their school districts zero tolerance policiesand theyre
winning. Misguided discipline policies like zero tolerance push children
out of school and into the criminal justice system. These policies also
disproportionately hurt our most underserved children: black, Latino,
poor, LGBT, and disabled students. How does the fight for fair discipline
tie into other fights for justice? With major wins in cities and states
across America (and now the attention of the DOJ and DOE), the
movement for discipline reform is a bright spot on a sometimes bleak
political landscape and a case study in successful movement building.
Stink Tanks in Your State: Inside the State Policy Network
The State Policy Network (SPN) is a network of 64 right-wing statebased think tanks that have been the leading advocates of the rightwing agenda in the states for over the last two decades. In November
2013, ProgressNow and the Center for Media and Democracy launched
StinkTanks.org, which houses a national report on SPN, state-based
information on the SPN affiliates in every state, and action items people
can take to help expose SPN. This session will present the information
on StinkTanks.org and serve as an educational tool for progressives on
how SPN works, the funders behind it (including the Koch brothers),
and how to fight back against those who work against us.
Stop the Deportations: How Were Calling on President
Obama to Use Executive Power to Stop Separating Families
In the six years of his administration, President Obama has overseen
more than 2 million deportationsa record number that surpasses that
of any other president. The number is one of his bitterest legacies,
a symbol of 2 million mothers, fathers, and children who have been
separated from their families and deported away from their homes.
In 2012, DREAMers fought for and won deferred action, which now
protects young immigrants from deportation. But in the absence of legislative immigration reform, more must be done. Join us for a discussion
on how weve fought to persuade President Obama to exercise more
of his executive powers on immigration and deportationsand what the
use of this power could mean for progressives in 2014 and 2016.
Student Debt and Wall Street: How Finance is Taking
a Growing Share of Higher Education Spending and
What We Can Do About It
Tuition rose more than 1000% in the last 30 years. Student debt now
surpasses credit card debt, and this growth shows no sign of slowing.
Where is the money going? This panel will explore how the financialization of the higher education sector is a major factor in rising
costs and growing debt, and how much of the money spent on higher
education in this country now goes to profits for the financial sector.
This panel will present the scale of this financial skim and explore
the policy solutions and organizing opportunities that exist to stop this
financialization of higher education.

TransMilitary: The Path to Full Equality in the US Military

When Dont Ask Dont Tell was in effect, the policy addressed sexual
orientation but not gender identity. Consequently, its repeal had no effect
on transgender service members. It continues to be legal to ask if a
person is transgender and then fire them. Today, it is outdated military
policiesnot the lawthat ban transgender people from serving and
forces their discharge if they are found out. Despite changes to the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, which removed
gender identity disorder as a mental illness, the U.S. military has not
updated their policies. Service members are still discharged with this
discredited diagnosis. Drawing on lessons learned from the campaign
to repeal DADT, and the model for open transgender service in other
countries, this session will explore the path forward toward full equality.

federal government is also the nations biggest low-wage job creator.
But it doesnt have to be this way. Find out how President Obama can
lift millions out of low-wage work with a swipe of his pen.
Voting Rights: On the Frontlines
Candidates running for Secretary of State will discuss voting rights
issues that come up in the states and what participants can do to help
fight back against Voter ID laws in their own states.
Why Net Neutrality is a Social Justice Issue
Earlier this year, a court overturned the FCCs common sense net
neutrality rules, which guaranteed users the right to connect to the blogs,
websites, and social platforms of their choice. Now, corporate Internet
Service Providers (ISPs) are free to block anything, for almost any reason.
Theres nothing stopping your ISP from censoring access to the blogs
and tools you rely on every day. Each organization represented on this
panel organized to restore net neutrality, culminating in the delivery of
1.1 million signatures to the FCC in January. Join us as we discuss why
net neutrality is a key social justice issue.
Women on the Run
Join us for a panel of best practices and cautionary tales from women
running for local, state, and federal office. Well focus on strategies for
overcoming sexism and building diverse coalitions. Polling says women
have to be qualified and likable to winand likable to be qualified. How
do we prove both to voters? How can we build diverse coalitions to win
and govern? Do women bring different power skills than men? And if so,
what are they?
Workers Organizing Online: What Weve Learned and What
Were Learning
Digital organizing in the labor movement is finally hitting its stride.
Organizing 2.0 is the only organization founded specifically to address
this field, and we want to share some of what weve learned over our
five years of study. Well feature case studies of brave and successful
online/offline organizing, including higher risk/higher reward moves
by labor/community coalitions like Fast Food Forward and OurWalmart.
Well talk about how teacher unions have broadened education fights
to include the entire community and how union locals and community
groups have invested in online work even with limited capacity.

Using Strategic Communications to Win on Controversial

Issues
If you work on issues that spark public controversy and challenge
deeply held convictions, strong controversy communications strategies
should be a foundational part of your toolkit. From immigration to
religion to abortion, expertly navigating and influencing the public

from preventing crisis to managing one. In addition, well explore
the infrastructure needed to create knowledge-driven strategies.
Using Video to Change Hearts and Minds

happens when a politician likes your Facebook page? This training

of your advocacy toolkit. Trainers will give examples and invite
the audience to discuss hypothetical situations to develop a deeper
understanding of the rules that apply to online advocacy.

of music, and through technologies that break down barriers between

Since 2002, speakers for LAW ENFORCEMENT
AGAINST PROHIBITION have led the public debate
on drug policy. As current and former criminal justice
professionals, LEAP speakers bring an unassailable
credibility to the conversation. LEAP believes existing
drug policies have failed to address the problems of
crime, drug abuse, addiction, and the flow of illegal drugs. This group
of international law enforcement professionals and concerned citizens
agree that by fighting a war on drugs, governments have increased the
societal problems associated with drug abuse. LEAP believes a system
of regulation is less harmful, more ethical, and more effective than
prohibition.
The METAPHOR PROJECT (metaphorproject.org) teaches progressive activists how
to mainstream their messages by framing
them as part of the best American story. Using broadly accessible
American phases, images, and metaphors, we help people evoke the most
powerful American story elements for their messages. The Democratic
Hub is an advanced liberal political community, designed for liberal
politics with discussion forums, pages on winning common arguments,
conservative lies and controversies, laws, political issues, elections,
events, news, and much more. Help us defend Democrats and keep
Republicans honest.

Founded in January 2009, the PROGRESSIVE

CHANGE CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE (PCCC) is
a national grassroots organization with a mission of
building progressive power. With nearly one million
members, we help get bold progressive candidates elected and work with
them to govern progressively. MSNBCs Ed Schultz calls the PCCC the
top progressive group in the country. The Nation magazine awarded
PCCC Most Valuable Campaign of 2011 for our Draft Elizabeth
Warren campaign. In 2012, we raised over $1 million for Warren,
raised over $2.5 million overall for progressive candidates, and had
over 30 bold progressive victories. We focus on economic populism
and democracy issuesincluding expanding Social Security benefits,
Wall Street reform and accountability, and bold campaign finance
reform.
THE PROGRESSIVE INC. is the publisher
of The Progressive magazine, Progressive.org,
PRWatch.org, ALECexposed.org, SourceWatch.org,
and PublicSchoolShakedown.org. In a merger with the Center for Media
and Democracy announced earlier this year, the Progressive Inc. now
includes an award-winning investigative research arm to compliment
its print magazine, that has published powerful progressive voices like
Jim Hightower and Howard Zinn and such historic articles like the
Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.s Letter from a Birmingham Jail.
Lisa Graves is the President of the Progressive Inc.; Ruth Conniff is
Editor-in-Chief; and Mary Bottari is Vice President.
PROGRESSIVEPUNCH (progressivepunch.org)
is the most encompassing searchable database of
Congressional voting records available on the web.
Searchable by individual member of Congress, zip
code, and any one of 160 different issue categories,
it offers detailed, non-partisan, easy-to-read narrative
vote descriptions and uses an algorithm contrasting the most progressive
Democrats vs. the Republican Caucus. PROGRESSIVE KICK is
a national progressive SuperPAC and 527, focused on elections and
incumbent accountability. We focus on Congress and state legislatures,
engaging in tough but winnable primary and general elections. Imagine
the left end of the possible a la Paul Wellstone. Were on the cutting edge
of 21st century messaging technologies.
The PROGRESSIVE VOICES NETWORK is creating
a progressive media-messaging platform for the Digital
Century. Not content with the status quo of vicious
rightwing hate-talk and lies on AM radio, The Progressive
Voices Institute, a nonprofit 501(c)(3), streams national
progressive talk shows like Mike Malloy, Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann,
Stephanie Miller, and Ring of Fire to computers, smartphones, tablets,
and connected cars 24/7. Weve freed progressive talk and messaging
from the clutches of the conservative broadcast oligopolies and returned
them to the people. And rather than run the 17 local commercial minutes
every hour, we run original, timely commentary, interviews, and
political satire.
Corporations have their lobbyists in Washington,
D.C.; the people need advocates too. Thats where
PUBLIC CITIZEN (citizen.org) comes in. We serve as
the peoples voice in the halls of power, championing
citizen interests before Congress, the executive branch
agencies, and the courts. We work for reduced corporate influence over
government; clean, safe and sustainable energy; a strong regulatory
system; safe drugs and affordable health care; citizen access to the courts;
and a trade agenda that can benefit Americans rather than multinational
corporations. We take no government or corporate money, which enables
us to remain fierce and independent advocates for the people.

UNITEBLUE is a nonprofit organization that leverages the power of social media to connect and amplify
progressives. We bring real people together because
every voice matters. Each of us can create a meaningful
impact discussing the issues we care about most passionately. UniteBlue helps everyone on the Left work together, amplifying
each of our individual voices while making all of our activism more
effective. The more real people join together, the greater strength we
have in numbers. Our voices in unison can fight back against billionaires
buying our democracy and Republicans crippling our government.
