Born 011 October 2J, L840 in Tambov, in an ofcer's family of modest means,
Minayev became conversant with the European languages, French and German, at home

arly age, while he gained an excellent knowledge of the Oriental languages,
Sanskrit, PaJi and Pmkrit, at the Oriental Lan

f Petersburg, where he was a sudent durin

the years 1858 - 1862. Working under
the
guidance of his teacher, V.P. Vassilyev, a specialist in Buddhism and Chinese,
Min
ayev
became interested in the study of the origin of Buddhism, its philosophy, and
such m
atters as the dating of the canonical Buddhist texts and characteristics of Buddha
statues in India and Sout-east Asia. He had other interests as well, covering the felds
Of lingistics, history, literature, folklore and geography, An essay he wrote as a
student on the Geographical Studies of Monoglia, characterized as a monumental work
which surpassed al expectations and more than met a I the requirements of the
Faculty, 2 won for him a gol d medal.
During the years 1863 - 1868, Minayev visited universities I Germany, England
and France, where he had the opportunity of meeting and learning under eminent
.scholars such as Albrecht Weber, Theodor Ben

Minayev came lo the East thee times. He visited Sri Lanka (then known
Ceylon), India and Nepal in 1874 - 75, India only in 1880, and Indil1 and
Bur
in 1885 -- 86. The purpose of Minayov's visit to Sri Lnnka was to gain a rlrst-
knowledge of the state of Buddhism in the island. According l his book. Skelch

Ceylon and India.`l he visited Buddhist monasteries and made contact with lear
monks from whom he gained .uch information which he could not get in any @
way or from other persons. The distinguished Russian ethnographers. Alexan
Mikhailovich Meerwarth (1884 '31} and Ludmil a Alexandrovlla Mec)'warlh (J
- 1965), who visited Sri Lanka in lnc ycar: ll4 1915 on a special ethnograp
expedition of the Russian Academy of Sci ences_ considered Ihemseives followers
Minayev. In the preface to their book, In U Remole Comer of Cfylon, 4 the M
warths recorded their ildebtedness lo Minayev s excellent work, Sketches Uf

as a supplement' to his work.
Minayev's many publications ncIudc a major study entitl ed Buddhism: Researe
ad Materials, published in two issues,5 the frst cont ai ning an introduction to
sources, and the second a few' Sanskrit texts having a bearing upon the history
Buddhisn1. Available in a French iranslation,f this work. which in t he words of t
author "must be regarded as an introduction to the exposition of the Buddhist doctri
in its historical sequence," contains an examination of the history of ancient Buddhi
it s institutions, doctrines, organization and basic religious and philosophical conceptio

Yet another of Minayev's contribu.tions to scholarship was the collection of

scripts during his expeditions in the East.22 The greater rart of his col:ection g
donated to the S8ltykov-Shchedrin S\lte Pu.bl ic Library in St. Petershurg, formerly kn
,S Leningrad and also Petrograd. Most of the manuscripts described in Mirono
catalogue of Indian manuscripts kept in this library dTC ihose from the Minal
collectionY The 305 titles in Mironov's catalogu.e cQllt ain descriptions of Brahma
Jaina and Buddhist manuscripts Urranged in three sections.24 .In his inlroductio1l1
the catalogue written in 1917, Mironov stated that the publicHti on was oniy the
part of his work. He planned to describe in d second part olher Northern-Budd
and Pali manusc.ripts and to give the history of the collection, n index of aut
(Ind liLle:, and SO!C photographs of the manuscripts, Regrettably, this part n
appeared in print.
