Notes: SCBs: Scheduled Commercial Banks; RRBs: Regional Rural Banks; REC: Rural Electrification Corporation Limited; Outstanding loan is
(principal+unrecovered interest). RRBs came into existence in 197576. Data up to 199091 pertain to the period JulyJune and AprilMarch thereafter. In case of
SCBs, data for all the years pertain to the JulyJune period. The data since 19992000 are strictly not comparable with the earlier years as it covers not only Primary
Agricultural Credit Societies (PACSs) but also State Co-operative Agriculture and Rural Development Banks (SCARDBs) and Primary Co-operative Agriculture and
Rural Development Banks (PCARDBs), while the earlier period covers PACSs only. Data for loans from co-operatives since 199394 are not strictly comparable with
the earlier period as many defaulters became non-defaulters with the implementation of the Agricultural and Rural Debt Relief (ARDR) Scheme resulting in an
increase in the assistance from banks; Introduction/stabilisation of Lead Bank Returns (LBRs) and increase in the number of banks as well as in the awareness and
consequent improvement in the data maintenance and reporting system at the field level resulted in an increase in the amount of loans reported in subsequent years.
Total for loans issued for the years 197879 to 198687 and for both loans issued and loans outstanding for the years 200809 to 201011 are not provided. In
indirect credit, funds would reach agriculture indirectly through some intermediary organisation/institution/agencies. In such a case, the fund availing agencies would
be responsible for its repayment to the credit giving agencies.
