with a number of positive actions. Having
taken on three new staf from nearby TE
Connectivity (formally Tyco Electronics)
to cope with the demand for its precision
engineering services, the company
has also invested in PSL Datatrack
advanced production control MRP
software, and additional CNC machining
technology is being assessed to further
enhance efciencies.
A hands-on, family-owned business, ND
Precision Products now has the third
generation of the Squire family working
under its roof. Managing Director, Nick
Squire, recalls: When my father
established the company in 1973, there
were just two employees equipped with a
milling machine and a lathe, providing
tooling and engineering support for an
automotive component manufacturer.
Today, ND Precision Products provides a
far broader service. Having invested in
CNC turning, milling and high speed
machining centres, wire and die sink EDM
machine tools, and surface and cylindrical
grinding, its services have expanded to
cater for almost every industry sector. It
provides injection and compression
mould tools, multistage progression press
tooling, complex xtures and precision
machined components, for demanding
customers in the aerospace, defence,
pharmaceutical and medical, automotive
and motorsport, metrology, food and
beverage, subsea oil and gas sectors, as
well as providing support for general
precision engineering companies.
From a complex multi cavity mould tool to
a simple punch and die set, every enquiry
we receive is given a thorough review, and
we will often go the extra mile to ensure we
ofer the customer an efective solution
at the right price. We have even invested
in laser marking and heat treatment
equipment to address customers
requirements, Nick Squire explains.
A further example of the companys
foresight is evidenced by its investment in
advanced laser etching and welding
technology. The rst large subcontract
machine in the South West, the laser
welder can accept workpieces up to
350kg and is operated by staf with
almost a decade of experience, which is
essential to getting any repair or
modication work right rst time.
Expanding into new markets has been one
of ND Precision Products keys to success,
and it was the rst UK toolmaker to
exhibit in Russia, as Nick Squire says: We
took the opportunity to exhibit at a
Russian mould and tool show, where we
presented examples of the solutions we
had developed for a number of our
customers. It was extremely well received
and we have quoted on a number of
projects of various sizes since the event.

and Sonia Simmonds to service the plastic

Interplex Select Moulds is a totally
integrated supplier dedicated to meeting

located in three modern units in High
Wycombe, close to Exit 4 of the M40,
which for many years has been the centre
of moulding excellence in the Thames
Valley where many supporting tool and
mouldmaking service providers are also

Many of Interplex Select Moulds
customers have remained with the
rm since it was re-established in 1990 as
one of the most progressive mould
makers in the UK. Quality has always been
key to its operation and all moulds can
be tried and tested using the companys
in-house state of the art Krauss Mafei
injection moulding presses, which
includes two-shot and gas injection.

SSAB is a world leader in the specialist
area of abrasion resistant and high
strength steels which are marketed under
the well-known brand names of Docol,
Domex, Weldox, Hardox, Armox and
Toolox. These steels have acquired a
reputation for high and consistent quality,
and in spite of their hardness and
strength they are easy to bend, weld and
machine. In their heavy plate mill in
Oxelsund SSAB manufacture heavy
plate being quenched and tempered
upon delivery from the mill.
With respect to Toolox, engineering and
tool steel, SSAB are the only steel
producer in the world who manufacture
material in this totally unique way
compared to conventional tool and
engineering steels. Therefore, exceptional
properties are given to the steel using the
metallurgical processes in the production
line. Made from pure iron ore, vacuum
degassed and continuous cast (using a
special process developed in Sweden
called Controlled Soft Reduction) it is
then rolled, quenched and tempered to
meet the very exact specications set by
SSAB. Due to the high metallurgical
purity, the cleanliness and very low
sulphur content achieved Toolox
corresponds to ESR quality material.
Every plate is uniquely produced, and
each plate is tested for hardness,
toughness and homogeneity.
Toolox shows very low residual stresses,
even after heavy machining of both grades
it is dimensionally stable and normally
requires no stress relieving. Which is
especially useful with long thin sections
such as gear racks etc. Even if machined
mainly from one side the material stays
extremely at requiring no straightening
and no secondary machining.
Toolox can be fabricated into various
sections even tubes, it is very easy to weld
due to the low carbon content when
compared with traditional tool steels,
Toolox will also withstand temperatures
up to 590 C without any signicant loss
of room temperature toughness or
strength. SSAB recommend a stress
relieving operation after ame cutting,
welding and spark erosion.
Toolox 33,300 HBW has an equal
hardness to P20 (1.2311) but will machine
~40-50% faster than 1.2311.It has a typical
toughness which is about 5 times higher
than 1.2311. Toolox 33 also has THREE
times the impact toughness of 42CrMo4
and due to the lower carbon content it is
much easier to weld.
Toolox44, 450 HBW (~45 HRC) , has been
developed from the companys well
reputed steel Hardox, but due to its
unique production process it can be used
as a hot application wear part up to 600C.
It also has extremely high impact strength
but can be readily machined and is very
easy to weld. Toolox44 has up to 3 times
the toughness of H13 (1.2344) at 45 HRC
and up to 5 times tougher than D2
(1.2379) @ 60 HRC.

Both grades can be optically polished,
nitride and PVD coated if required to
tailor-make surface properties .For
example a surface hardness between 60
to 65 HRC can be achieved after nitriding
for very high wear resistance applications,
or a coating suitable to counteract
corrosive attacks, whilst still retaining a
very tough core strength that is not prone
to cracking or chipping.

We use the latest technology to create 3D
Digitizing of freeform surfaces. Our COMET
and T-SCAN CS systems are exible and
mobile units which are perfect for a wide
range of industries. The all new COMET
616MP system is a one camera machine
which is fast, accurate and ideal for
demanding applications. Our COMET L3D
is a 3D digitizing system that uses one
camera and LED lighting to create excellent
quality data easily and quickly. If you need
a handheld device the T-SCAN CS is the
perfect laser scanner as it is compact, easy
to use but still creates high quality results.
We can also provide inspection software to
evaluate data collected. The INSPECTplus
can be used online or at a later time to suit
your requirements. In addition, we are users
and resellers of a number of reverse
engineering software packages.
Surface Inspection
If you are looking for excellent surface
quality, of for example a vehicle, then our
ABIS ll surface inspection system can
help. It has an advanced sensor system
that can quickly nd 3D defects such as
dents, sink marks and cracks that may
normally go un-noticed. By using this
surface inspection tool at an early stage

Superites core business is the fast
response modication and repair service
of plastic mould tools up to 12 tonne and
machining of large bolster sets to the
toolmaking industry for moulders and

trim and underbonnet components, white

A very small number of tools are designed

utilising Delcam Powershape PRO E +
Autocad CAD/CAM on 6 seats, DNC linked

We employ 28 personnel, on a shift basis,

delivery times for our tooling contracts.

Carbo and Chromium Nitride; and FGN
are all thin 3 to 5 microns gold, silver-grey,
or pink coatings ofering very high
hardness and efective metal-to-metal
friction reduction.

Thomas Keating Ltd has been involved in
toolmaking for nearly 70 years and was

Award for Enterprise for International
Trade in 2012.
The company is a mould tool manufacturer
with a reputation for accuracy and
attention to detail. We make single and
multi cavity tools for complex and
technical mouldings in the electronic and
medical elds such including medical
parts, hearing aids, aerosols, spray
dispensers and rigid packaging.
Scientic ground and satellite instruments
are also produced for our sister company
on the same site using the toolmaking skills
of our highly skilled staf - for example TK
developed 67 pairs of radiometric targets
to calibrate ALMA, the European Southern
Observatory (ESO)s agship ground-

Recent investment has been made in the
eld of electroforming wave-guide
component technology. Our electroforming
capabilities covers both copper and nickel
supported by our gold plating processing.
Recent production machinery investments
have added to our machinery base include
a Huron VMC and a Doosan Puma mill turn
machining centre.
We have a fully integrated CAD/CAM
capability built around Pro/Engineer
Wildre and EdgeCAM CAM software,
with direct Ethernet links to all of our
numerous CNC machines.
We have expanded our Jig Grinding
capabilities to now include 3 CNC and 3
Manual Moore machines in a temperature
controlled room where we process vital
parts for AgustaWestland helicopters to
high accuracy with quick turn round. This
also allows TK to also ofer a subcontract
service for the grinding of forms, holes,
punches and dies etc. Tolerances of 4
microns are the norm!
We have recently had our 400 Moore jig
grinder rebuilt bringing the machine to
better than original build tolerances with
the added option of 3D micro milling by
CNC control of the Z axis.

Mastermill 2520 delivers high performance
milling of titanium, superalloys and

of up to 0,6 mm per tooth feed rates, and
3 mm depth of cut (theoretical 5.5 mm) is
possible due to the design of the cutter
bodies and inserts that provide eight
cutting edges per insert. This combination
generates increased performance,
productivity, and security when machining
these difcult to machine materials.
HCN2125 targets increased productivity
when turning stainless steel, with tool life
improvements of up to 50 per cent not
uncommon.HCN 2125 is delivering
genuine benets in: higher cutting data;
greatlyimproved tool life; increased
productivity; enhanced surface quality;
application reliability and improved
machine utilisation.
HFC 06 lls the gap between solid carbide
end milling and the larger diameter
indexable insert cutters. By using a 6 mm
edge length insert it is possible to achieve
high performance milling with indexable
insert cutters as small as 16 mm diameter.

WS2 is a problem solver for the Plastics Industry!
Many plastic injection moulders and
toolmakers are nding WS2 low-friction
surface treatment the answer to their
release, ow and pick-up problems.
Indeed, the number of tools where
production was either difcult or
impossible being transformed by WS2 to
a working condition continues to increase.
Many moulders are specifying WS2 on
new tools as a means of cutting the time
spent on getting the tool working while
reducing production down time and
cycle-times to a minimum.
WS2 is used on plastic injection moulds as
a permanent release agent and coated-
on lubricant. WS2 is nding particular
usage with unscrewing cores, injection
mould cavities and cores, inserts, knife
blades for lm cutting, blow moulding,
head tooling, clean room moulding
operations, hot runner valve gear and
enhancement of ow-in moulds with ling
problems. When used on stainless steels
it can eliminate pickup and galling on
metal-on-metal sliding parts.
A Midlands Electrical Switch Box moulder
had a problem mould with parts regularly
sticking. WS2 was applied to both halves
of the mould. After three months the
company reported 140 hours saving in
down-time and 1/4 tonne saving in
material. The total job cost less than 200!

segments for the European Extremely
Large Telescope.
Both in its polishing technology and in its
measurement techniques, Zeeko has
been a key innovator in the development
of processes that in the coming years
will be relied upon by at least a part of
the astronomical community. Richard
will describe these innovations and
discuss some of the challenges faced by
Zeeko in meeting the aspirations of the
scientic community.
