The July 4th holiday is a favorite time of year for many Americans. Backyard
parties, good food, and fireworks. But the celebrating unfortunately turns deadly
when people drive after drinking alcohol. Drunk
driving, buzzed driving, and drugged driving are
preventableproblems,particularlyontheFourthof
July. In 2012, there were 179 people killed in
motor vehicle traffic crashes over the Fourth of
July holiday in the United States. Of those
fatalities, 44% occurred in crashes that involved at
leastonedriverormotorcycleoperatorwithaBAC
of.08orhigher.

This Fourth of July, local law enforcement is


takingpartinacrackdowntoputanendtodrunk
driving. The "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign will mean increased
enforcementwithzerotoleranceforthosewhodriveimpaired.Youcanexpecttosee
the police out in force, so please make plans for a designated driver or public
transportation if you plan to celebrate with alcohol or drugs. While friends may
complainaboutseeinglawenforcementoutinforce,pleaserememberthattheirrole
istokeepourcommunitysafe.

Living in a small town and working in the nonprofit industry, I often hear Eagle
County'syouthcomplainthattherearelimitedvolunteeropportunitiestoengageour
community.Besidesskiingandsnowboarding,manylocalhighschoolstudentsseek
alternative activities that spur future career interest, inspire global awareness and
simplycontributetothewellbeingoftheirneighbors.

Cassandra Armas, a recent graduate of


Eagle Valley High School has this
approach to life and consistently puts the
needs of others as a priority in her busy
schedule. In addition to excelling in the
classroom, Cassandra was a member of
many EVHS student clubs, including
student government, LULAC (League of
United Latin American Citizens), Cycle
Effect, band (piano/guitar) and the soccer
team. A highlight of her student
government tenure was their trip to
Denver'sRonaldMcDonaldHouseandthe
Children's Hospital. She remarks, "The
experiencetaughtmethatvolunteeringcomesindifferentways.Itcanbecleaninga
localparkortalkingtokidswhoaregoingthrougharoughtimeandmakingthem
forgetabouttheirillnessforalittlewhile."Shehasbeenastudentambassadorforthe
YouthFoundationandcurrentlycoachestheirsummersoccerprogram.Shehasalso
been a dedicated volunteer for the town of Eagle's annual Cinco de Mayo festival
andhelpswiththeevent'sstudentactivities.

Summer.Liza lives in Houston, Texas where she is currently a sophomore in high
school. She is visiting for the summer and wanted to be an

Youth Coalition in hopes to help provide a student's
perspective as well as learn from the program. This past year
LizaservedontheHabitatforHumanityboard.Shewasalso
a member of the Community Service Club. Besides
volunteering,Lizadoescrosscountry,track,andsoccer.This

SummerPrograms:Summerishere!SOSjustlaunchedSummerprogramswith
numerous students signed up to complete a
continuous year of positive adult mentorship. SOS
works with underserved youth in the community to
inspire positive decision making. The addition of
summerprogramsallowsSOStoextendthepositive
impact of the curriculum throughout the year. This
summerwearelookingforwardtoengagingstudents
through new sports including backpacking, rock
climbing, hiking, biking, fly fishing and stand up
paddle boarding. Throughout all these adventures,
students will learn SOS's core values of courage,
discipline, integrity, wisdom, compassion and humility. SOS has an amazing team
ofsummerguideslineduptomentorstudentsthissummer,modelingcorevaluesfor
themandteachingleadershipskills.Weareexcitedforallthelessonsouryouthwill

TheHealthyCommunitiesCoalition(Coalition)isproudtoconvenecommunitymembersandorganizationsthatarededicatedto
improvingopportunitiesforhealthylivingforallinEagleCounty.Throughcollaboration
amongCoalitionmembersandothercommunitypartners,evidencebased
strategiesareimplementedtofulfilltheCoalition'smissionoffacilitatingandempowering
thecommunityintoactionforlifelongwellnessthroughhealthyeatingandactiveliving.
Strategiesthathavebeensuccessfullyimplementedtodateinclude:
The 5210 campaign is intended to spread a single, common message throughout
the Eagle River Valley as a daily reminder for: 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, 2
hours or less of recreational screen time, 1 hour physical activity, 0 sugar sweetened
beverages.
Every Kid Healthy Week provided students at June Creek Elementary and Berry
Creek Middle School with fun educational activities using the 5210 theme, in
support of the Universal Breakfast Program implemented at both schools this past
year.
The Health Links program is now available to Eagle County businesses, enabling
access to kickstart funding for wellness programs and recognition of organizations
offeringworksitewellnessthroughHealthyBusinessCertification.
The Food Production Map identifies food producers within a 100mile radius from
the Town of Eagle for the purpose of understanding regional "assets" in food
productionwithconsiderationforsustainableandlocalfoodsystems,andenablesthe
generalpublictolearnmoreaboutopportunitiesforlocallysourcedfood.
TheHealthy Communities Coalition meets quarterly the next meeting is July 16 from 2

Teen driver crashes are the leading cause of
deathforournation'syouth.Theoverwhelming
majority of these crashes are caused by
inexperienceordistractions,not"thrillseeking"
ordeliberaterisktaking.
In the National Young Driver Survey, 20
percentof11thgradedriversreportedatleast
one crash over the past year, including 5
percent who experienced two or more
crashes. (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia,

In2009,3,242teensages1519losttheirlives

Crashes are more common among young
driversthananyotheragegroup.IntheUnited

Purpose:
The Foundation supports Colorado nonprofit
organizations that assist people to help
themselves while nurturing and preserving their

Older child passengers, ages 12 to 17, are
morelikelytodieinacarcrashthanyounger
children. This risk increases with each
teenage year. The top three predictors for
fatality are nonuse of restraints, teen drivers
and roads with speed limits of 45 mph or
